Generalized Cartan Calculus in general dimension

    Get PDF
We develop the generalized Cartan Calculus for the groups G = SL(2,R) × R[superscript +],SL(5,R) and SO(5, 5). They are the underlying algebraic structures of d = 9, 7, 6 exceptional field theory, respectively. These algebraic identities are needed for the “tensor hierarchy” structure in exceptional field theory. The validity of Poincaré lemmas in this new differential geometry is also discussed. Finally we explore some possible extension of the generalized Cartan calculus beyond the exceptional series.United States. Dept. of Energy (Grant Contract DE-SC00012567

Aeroelastic modelling and control of very flexible air vehicles using a nonlinear modal formulation

    Get PDF
We present the development of a nonlinear reduced-order formulation for the simulation of geometrically-nonlinear responses of flexible aircraft and other aeroelastic systems. The theoretical foundation of the formulation will be presented first, based on a modal projection of the intrinsic description for beams, coupled with a 2-D unsteady aerodynamic description. We will then investigate the preservation of conservation laws in the proposed method and develop the numerical details in a practical implementation of the method in MATLAB. In this work we also developed a method of obtaining coeffcients of the nonlinear modal beam equations by means of a condensation process, based on the direct application of Guyan reduction of a high-fidelity 3D FE model. Structural and aeroelastic simulations will be presented to verify the implementation of the method against theory and published results, as well as demonstrating the numerical properties of the approach. Static trim, stability analysis and open-loop nonlinear flight simulations using the framework will be demonstrated on a highly-flexible flying wing and compared with published results, as well as carrying out control design and closed-loop nonlinear simulations to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed reduced-order method.Open Acces

Localized Mobility Management for SDN-Integrated LTE Backhaul Networks

Small cell (SCell) and Software Define Network (SDN) are two key enablers to meet the evolutional requirements of future telecommunication networks, but still on the initial study stage with lots of challenges faced. In this paper, the problem of mobility management in SDN-integrated LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile backhaul network is investigated. An 802.1ad double tagging scheme is designed for traffic forwarding between Serving Gateway (S-GW) and SCell with QoS (Quality of Service) differentiation support. In addition, a dynamic localized forwarding scheme is proposed for packet delivery of the ongoing traffic session to facilitate the mobility of UE within a dense SCell network. With this proposal, the data packets of an ongoing session can be forwarded from the source SCell to the target SCell instead of switching the whole forwarding path, which can drastically save the path-switch signalling cost in this SDN network. Numerical results show that compared with traditional path switch policy, more than 50 signalling cost can be reduced, even considering the impact on the forwarding path deletion when session ceases. The performance of data delivery is also analysed, which demonstrates the introduced extra delivery cost is acceptable and even negligible in case of short forwarding chain or large backhaul latency

Self-organized beam scheduling as an enabler for coexistence in 5G unlicensed bands

In order to support user data-rates of Gbps and above in the fifth generation(5G)communication systems, millimetre-wave(mm-wave) communication is proposed as one of the most important enabling technologies. In this paper, we consider the spectrum bands shared by 5G cellular base stations (BS) and some existing networks, such as WiGig and proposed a method for spectrally efficient coexistence of multiple interfering BSs through adaptive self-organized beam scheduling. These BSs might use multiple radio access technologies belonging to multiple operators and are deployed in the unlicensed bands, such as 60GHz. Different from the recently emerging coexistence scenarios in the unlicensed 5GHz band, where the proposed methods are based on omni-directional transmission, beamforming needs to be employed in mm-wave bands to combat the high path loss problem. The proposed method is concerned with this new scenario of communication in the unlicensed bands where(a)beam-forming is mandatory to combat severe path loss, (b) without optimal scheduling of beams mutual interference could be severe due to the possibility of beam-collisions, (c)unlike LTE which uses time-frequency resource blocks, a new resource, i.e., the beam direction, is used as mandatory feature. We propose in this paper a novel multi-RAT coexistence mechanism where neighbouring 5G BSs, each serving their own associated users, schedule their beam configurations in a self-organized manner such that their own utility function, e.g. spectral efficiency, is maximized. The problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem and it is shown via simulations that our proposed distributed algorithms yield a comparable spectral efficiency for the entire networks as that using an exhaustive search, which requires global coordination among coexisting RATs and also has a much higher algorithmic complexity
