Cholesteryl ester transfer protein TaqIB polymorphism and its association with serum lipid levels and longevity in Chinese Bama Zhuang population
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Taq</it>IB polymorphism in the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene has been reported to be associated with serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and longevity in several populations, but controversial results also arose probably due to racial/ethnic diversity. Bama is a remote and mountainous county located in the northwest of Guangxi, People's Republic of China, which has been well known for its longevity for centuries. The current study was to investigate the possible association of CETP <it>Taq</it>IB polymorphism with serum lipid levels and longevity in the Bama Zhuang population.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The CETP <it>Taq</it>IB genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism in 523 long-lived inhabitants (long-lived group, LG; aged 90-107 years) and 498 healthy controls without longevity family history (non-long-lived group, non-LG; aged 40-69 years) residing in Bama County.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The levels of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were higher but TG, HDL-C/LDL-C ratio and the prevalence of dyslipidemia were lower in LG than in non-LG (<it>P </it>< 0.001 for all). There were no differences in the allelic and genotypic frequencies between the two groups (<it>P </it>> 0.05). Serum HDL-C levels and HDL-C/LDL-C ratio in LG were different among the genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.01 for each), the subjects with B2B2 and B1B2 genotyes had higher HDL-C levels and HDL-C/LDL-C ratio than the subjects with B1B1genotye, whereas the levels of TC and HDL-C in non-LG were different among/between the genotypes (<it>P </it>< 0.01 for each), the B2 allele carriers had lower TC and higher HDL-C levels than the B2 allele noncarriers. Serum TG and HDL-C levels and HDL-C/LDL-C ratio were correlated with genotypes in LG, whereas serum TC and HDL-C levels were associated with genotypes in non-LG (<it>P </it>< 0.05-0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The association of CETP <it>Taq</it>IB polymorphism and serum lipid profiles is different between LG and non-LG in the Chinese Bama Zhuang population. CETP <it>Taq</it>IB polymorphism might be one of the longevity-related genetic factors in this population.</p

Transitional Goos-Hänchen effect due to the topological phase transitions.
We examine the Goos-Hänchen (GH) effect for a Gaussian beam impinging on the surface of silicene whose topological phase transitions can be modulated by external electric field and/or irradiating circular polarized light. It is shown that both the spatial and angular shifts in GH effect present a sharp jump due to the topological phase transitions. The transitional GH effect can be attributed to transitional optical conductivity, which relates to Berry curvature and Chern numbers. These results can be extensively extended to other two-dimensional atomic crystals in graphene family. We believe that the transitional GH effect may offer a possible way to determine the Berry curvature, Chern numbers, and topological phase transition by a direct optical measurement
Bilateral tonic seizures probably induced by eperisone hydrochloride: a case report
Eperisone hydrochloride is a central muscle relaxant used to treat osteoporosis. Seizures are rare side effects of eperisone hydrochloride and have been previously reported in the medical literature in overdose situations but not at regular doses. This case report describes a 42-year-old male painter who developed severe bilateral tonic seizures after the initiation of eperisone hydrochloride at regular doses for low back pain. Symptoms gradually eased in the days following the discontinuation of eperisone hydrochloride and antiepileptic treatment, with no recurrence. This rare adverse drug reaction warrants clinical awareness; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse reactions remain to be clarified
Electronic correlations and flattened band in magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate Co3Sn2S2
The interplay between electronic correlations and topological protection may
offer a rich avenue for discovering emergent quantum phenomena in condensed
matter. However, electronic correlations have so far been little investigated
in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) by experiments. Here, we report a combined optical
spectroscopy and theoretical calculation study on the strength of electronic
correlations in a kagome magnet Co3Sn2S2 and the influence of electronic
correlations on its WSM state expected within a single-particle picture. The
electronic kinetic energy estimated from our optical data is about half of that
obtained from single-particle ab initio calculations, which indicates
intermediate-strength electronic correlations in this system. Furthermore,
comparing the energy ratios between the interband-transition peaks at high
energies in the experimental and single-particle-ab-initio-calculation derived
optical conductivity spectra with the electronic bandwidth renormalization
factors obtained by many-body calculations enables us to estimate the
Coulomb-interaction strength (U ~ 4 eV) of electronic correlations in Co3Sn2S2.
Our many-body calculations with U ~ 4 eV show that a WSM state, which is
characterized by bulk Weyl cones and surface Fermi arcs, survives in this
correlated electron system. Besides, a sharp experimental optical conductivity
peak at low energy, which is absent in the
single-particle-ab-initio-calculation-derived optical conductivity spectrum but
is consistent with the optical conductivity peaks obtained by many-body
calculations, indicates that an electronic band connecting the two Weyl cones
is flattened by electronic correlations and emerges near the Fermi energy in
Co3Sn2S2. Our work paves the way for exploring flat-band-generated quantum
phenomena in WSMs
Association between social support and mutual-support needs among the rural adults in China: a cross-sectional study
BackgroundIn rural China, there is now a huge gap between the supply and demand for old-age care. To close the gap, developing rural mutual old-age services is extremely important. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship among social support, mutual support need, and mutual support willingness.MethodsWe conducted an online questionnaire survey using a Chinese Internet research company; 2,102 valid responses were received. The measures comprised the Social Support Rating Scale, the Mutual Support Willingness Questionnaire, and the Mutual Support Needs Scale. We calculated Pearson correlations to explore the association of social support with mutual-support need and mutual-support-need willingness. Multivariate analyses were also conducted using these factors as dependent variables.ResultsThe total score for the mutual support need for the adults in rural areas was 58.0 ± 12.1 and 36.96 ± 6.40 for social support, approximately 86.8% of the participants were willing to participate in mutual support. Furthermore, mutual support needs were positively correlated with subjective support (p < 0.01) and support utilization (p < 0.01), but negatively correlated with willingness to support each other (p < 0.05). The need for mutual support was also associated with age, sex, education level, dissatisfaction with the current economic situation, health status, and so on.ConclusionIt is necessary for government and health care providers to assess the different needs of rural older people and encourage individuals and organizations to provide mutual support for older people, especially to enhance emotional care for older people and improve their use of support. This is of great significance for developing mutual support services in rural China
The LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in the Southern Galactic Cap I. The Spectroscopic Redshift Catalog
We present a spectroscopic redshift catalog from the LAMOST Complete
Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in the Southern Galactic Cap
(SGC), which is designed to observe all sources (Galactic and extra-galactic)
by using repeating observations with a limiting magnitude of in
two fields. The project is mainly focusing on the completeness of
LAMOST ExtraGAlactic Surveys (LEGAS) in the SGC, the deficiencies of source
selection methods and the basic performance parameters of LAMOST telescope. In
both fields, more than 95% of galaxies have been observed. A post-processing
has been applied to LAMOST 1D spectrum to remove the majority of remaining sky
background residuals. More than 10,000 spectra have been visually inspected to
measure the redshift by using combinations of different emission/absorption
features with uncertainty of . In total, there are 1528
redshifts (623 absorption and 905 emission line galaxies) in Field A and 1570
redshifts (569 absorption and 1001 emission line galaxies) in Field B have been
measured. The results show that it is possible to derive redshift from low SNR
galaxies with our post-processing and visual inspection. Our analysis also
indicates that up to 1/4 of the input targets for a typical extra-galactic
spectroscopic survey might be unreliable. The multi-wavelength data analysis
shows that the majority of mid-infrared-detected absorption (91.3%) and
emission line galaxies (93.3%) can be well separated by an empirical criterion
of . Meanwhile, a fainter sequence paralleled to the main population
of galaxies has been witnessed both in / and /
diagrams, which could be the population of luminous dwarf galaxies but

ORM 1 as a biomarker of increased vascular invasion and decreased sorafenib sensitivity in hepatocellular carcinoma
This study aimed to clarify the role of Orosomucoid 1 (ORM1) in the development and therapy resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The mRNA expression level of ORM1 was analyzed via integrative analysis of Gene Express Omnibus (GEO) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets. The protein expression level of ORM1 in our cohort was determined using immunohistochemistry. Correlation analysis was used to investigate the relationship between ORM1 expression and clinical parameters. The Cell Counting Kit-8 assay was used to clarify the role of ORM1 in HCC malignant behaviors, including cell growth and sorafenib sensitivity, in vitro. The results indicated that ORM1 was significantly downregulated in the hepatic cancer cells compared to that in the non-cancerous cells. However, it was upregulated in microvascular invasion samples, especially in the cancer embolus compared to that in the surrounding tumor cells. Though Kaplan-Meier analysis did not show an association of ORM1 expression with the overall survival rates of HCC patients, univariate analysis indicated that ORM1 expression was highly correlated with tumor grade and stage. An in vitro assay also revealed that downregulation of ORM1 led to the suppression of tumor growth and enhancement of sorafenib sensitivity without epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) alteration, which was consistent with our bioinformatic analysis. Hence, ORM1 played a key role in HCC tumorigenesis and may serve as a potential target for the development of therapeutics against HCC in the future
Diversity of House Dust Mite Species in Xishuangbanna Dai, a Tropical Rainforest Region in Southwest China
. Purpose. To survey the species diversity of home dust mites (HDM) in Xishuangbanna, a tropical rainforest region in Southwest China. Methods. From August 2010 to January 2011, mite-allergic patients and healthy controls were invited to participate. Dust samples from the patients' homes were collected, and mites in the samples were isolated. Permanent slides were prepared for morphologically based species determination. Results. In total, 6316 mite specimens of morphologically identifiable species were found in 233 dust samples taken from 41 homes. The result shows that the mite family of Pyroglyphidae occupied the highest percentage of the total amount of mites collected, followed by Cheyletidae family. The most common adult Pyroglyphidae mites were Dermatophagoides (D.) farinae, D. pteronyssinus, and D. siboney. The most common mites found from other families were Blomia tropicalis, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, and Aleuroglyphus ovatus. Four main allergenic dust mite species D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus, D. siboney, and Blomia tropicalis were found to be coinhabiting in 6/41 homes. Conclusion. The HDM population in homes in Xishuangbanna, a tropical rainforest region in Southwest China, has its own characteristics. It has rich dust mite species and the dust mite densities do not show significant variation across seasons
