Decoding of 1/2-rate (24,12) Golay codes
A decoding method for a (23,12) Golay code is extended to the important 1/2-rate (24,12) Golay code so that three errors can be corrected and four errors can be detected. It is shown that the method can be extended to any decoding method which can correct three errors in the (23,12) Golay code
Magnetism and Charge Dynamics in Iron Pnictides
In a wide variety of materials, such as copper oxides, heavy fermions,
organic salts, and the recently discovered iron pnictides, superconductivity is
found in close proximity to a magnetically ordered state. The character of the
proximate magnetic phase is thus believed to be crucial for understanding the
differences between the various families of unconventional superconductors and
the mechanism of superconductivity. Unlike the AFM order in cuprates, the
nature of the magnetism and of the underlying electronic state in the iron
pnictide superconductors is not well understood. Neither density functional
theory nor models based on atomic physics and superexchange, account for the
small size of the magnetic moment. Many low energy probes such as transport,
STM and ARPES measured strong anisotropy of the electronic states akin to the
nematic order in a liquid crystal, but there is no consensus on its physical
origin, and a three dimensional picture of electronic states and its relations
to the optical conductivity in the magnetic state is lacking. Using a first
principles approach, we obtained the experimentally observed magnetic moment,
optical conductivity, and the anisotropy of the electronic states. The theory
connects ARPES, which measures one particle electronic states, optical
spectroscopy, probing the particle hole excitations of the solid and neutron
scattering which measures the magnetic moment. We predict a manifestation of
the anisotropy in the optical conductivity, and we show that the magnetic phase
arises from the paramagnetic phase by a large gain of the Hund's rule coupling
energy and a smaller loss of kinetic energy, indicating that iron pnictides
represent a new class of compounds where the nature of magnetism is
intermediate between the spin density wave of almost independent particles, and
the antiferromagnetic state of local moments.Comment: 4+ pages with additional one-page supplementary materia
The development of absorptive capacity-based innovation in a construction SME
Traditionally, construction has been a transaction-oriented industry. However, it is changing from the design-bid-build process into a business based on innovation capability and performance management, in which contracts are awarded on the basis of factors such as knowledge, intellectual capital and skills. This change presents a challenge to construction-sector SMEs with scarce resources, which must find ways to innovate based on those attributes to ensure their future competitiveness. This paper explores how dynamic capability, using an absorptive capacity framework in response to these challenges, has been developed in a construction-based SME. The paper also contributes to the literature on absorptive capacity and innovation by showing how the construct can be operationalized within an organization. The company studied formed a Knowledge Transfer Partnership using action research over a two-year period with a local university. The aim was to increase its absorptive capacity and hence its ability to meet the changing market challenges. The findings show that absorptive capacity can be operationalized into a change management approach for improving capability-based competitiveness. Moreover, it is important for absorptive capacity constructs and language to be contextualized within a given organizational setting (as in the case of the construction-based SME in the present study)
Correlation between 3:2 QPO pairs and Jets in Black Hole X-ray Binaries
We argue, following our earlier works (the "CEBZMC model"), that the
phenomenon of twin peak high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs)
observed in black hole X-ray binaries is caused by magnetic coupling (MC)
between accretion disk and black hole (BH). Due to MC, two bright spots occur
at two separate radial locations r_{in} and r_{out} at the disk surface,
energized by a kind of the Blandford-Znajek mechanism (BZ). We assume,
following the Kluzniak-Abramowicz QPO resonance model, that Keplerian
frequencies at these two locations are in the 3:2 ratio. With this assumption,
we estimate the BH spins in several sources, including GRO J1655-40, GRS
1915+105, XTE J1550-564, H1743-322 and Sgr A*. We give an interpretation of the
"jet line" in the hardness-intensity plane discussing the parameter space
consisting of the BH spin and the power-law index for the variation of the
large-scale magnetic field in the disk. Furthermore, we propose a new scenario
for the spectral state transitions in BH X-ray binaries based on fluctuation in

Collective excitations in a fermion-fermion mixture with different Fermi surfaces
In this paper, collective excitations in a homogeneous fermion-fermion
mixture with different Fermi surfaces are studied. In the Fermi liquid phase,
the zero-sound velocity is found to be larger than the largest Fermi velocity.
With attractive interactions, the superfluid phase appears below a critical
temperature, and the phase mode is the low-energy collective excitation. The
velocity of the phase mode is proportional to the geometric mean of the two
Fermi velocities. The difference between the two velocities may serve as a tool

Business Value Is not only Dollars - Results from Case Study Research on Agile Software Projects
Business value is a key concept in agile software development. This paper presents results of a case study on how business value and its creation is perceived in the context of agile projects. Our overall conclusion is that the project participants almost never use an explicit and structured approach to guide the value creation throughout the project. Still, the application of agile methods in the studied cases leads to satisfied clients. An interesting result of the study represents the fact that the agile process of many projects differs significantly from what is described in the agile practitionersâ books as best practices. The key implication for research and practice is that we have an incentive to pursue the study of value creation in agile projects and to complement it by providing guidelines for better clientâs involvement, as well as by developing structured methods that will enhance the value-creation in a project
On the performance of algorithms for the minimization of -penalized functionals
The problem of assessing the performance of algorithms used for the
minimization of an -penalized least-squares functional, for a range of
penalty parameters, is investigated. A criterion that uses the idea of
`approximation isochrones' is introduced. Five different iterative minimization
algorithms are tested and compared, as well as two warm-start strategies. Both
well-conditioned and ill-conditioned problems are used in the comparison, and
