The effect of silicon on the glass forming ability of the Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 bulk metallic glass forming alloy during processing of composites
Composites of the Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 bulk metallic glass, reinforced with up to 30 vol % SiC particles are synthesized and characterized. Results based on x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning Auger microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are presented. During processing of the composites, a TiC layer forms around the SiC particles and Si diffuses into the Cu47Ti34Zr11Ni8 matrix stabilizing the supercooled liquid against crystallization. The small Si addition between 0.5 and 1 at. % increases the attainable maximum thickness of glassy ingots from 4 mm for Cu–Ti–Zr–Ni alloys to 7 mm for Cu–Ti–Zr–Ni–Si alloys. DSC analyses show that neither the thermodynamics nor the kinetics of the alloy are affected significantly by the Si addition. This suggests that Si enhances the glass forming ability by chemically passivating impurities such as oxygen and carbon that cause heterogeneous nucleation in the melt
Mechanical properties of Zr_(57)Nb_5Al_(10)Cu_(15.4)Ni_(12.6) metallic glass matrix particulate composites
To increase the toughness of a metallic glass with the nominal composition Zr_(57)Nb_5Al_(10)Cu_(15.4)Ni_(12.6), it was used as the matrix in particulate composites reinforced with W, WC, Ta, and SiC. The composites were tested in compression and tension experiments. Compressive strain to failure increased by more than 300% compared with the unreinforced Zr_(57)Nb_5Al_(10)Cu_(15.4)Ni_(12.6), and energy to break of the tensile samples increased by more than 50%. The increase in toughness came from the particles restricting shear band propagation, promoting the generation of multiple shear bands and additional fracture surface area. There was direct evidence of viscous flow of the metallic glass matrix within the confines of the shear bands
Homological properties of determinantal arrangements
We study a certain family of hypersurface arrangements known as determinantal arrangements. Determinantal arrangements are a union of varieties defined by minors of a matrix of indeterminates. In particular, we investigate determinantal arrangements using the 2-minors of a 2 × n generic matrix (which can be thought of as natural extensions of braid arrangements), and prove certain statements about their freeness. We also study the topology of these objects. We construct a fibration for the complement of free determinantal arrangements, and use this fibration to prove statements about their homotopy groups. Furthermore, we show that the Poincaré polynomial of the complement factors nicely
Processing of carbon-fiber-reinforced Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5 bulk metallic glass composites
Carbon-fiber-reinforced bulk metallic glass composites are produced by infiltrating liquid Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5 into carbon fiber bundles with diameter of the individual fiber of 5 mum. Reactive wetting occurs by the formation of a ZrC layer around the fibers. This results in a composite with a homogeneous fiber distribution. The volume fraction of the fibers is about 50% and the density of the composite amounts to 4.0 g/cm(^3)
Buyers-to-shoppers ratio of shopping malls: A probit study in Hong Kong
Buyers-to-shoppers ratio (i.e. conversion rate) has long been one of the commonly adopted metrics in assessing retail performance of shopping malls, but it is almost always relied on interviews, consumer surveys, and questionnaires. These methods are intrinsically problematic in ascertaining the trustworthiness of the responses. This paper is probably the first objective study on the buyers-to-shoppers ratio based on actual observations in shopping malls in Hong Kong. A probit model is used to study factors affecting the ratio. The results show that consumer-surveys seriously over-estimate the ratio. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.postprin

Tail-Heaviness, Asymmetry, and Profitability Forecasting by Quantile Regression
We show that quantile regression is better than ordinary-least-squares (OLS) regression in forecasting profitability for a range of profitability measures following the conventional setup of the accounting literature, including the mean absolute forecast error (MAFE) evaluation criterion. Moreover, we perform both a simulated-data and an archival-data analysis to examine how the forecasting performance of quantile regression against OLS changes with the shape of the profitability distribution. Considering the MAFE and mean squared forecast error (MSFE) criteria together, quantile regression is more accurate relative to OLS when the profitability to be forecast has a heavier-tailed distribution. In addition, the asymmetry of the profitability distribution has either a U-shape or an inverted-U-shape effect on the forecasting accuracy of quantile regression. An application of the distributional shape analysis framework to cash flows forecasting demonstrates the usefulness of the framework beyond profitability forecasting, providing additional empirical evidence on the positive effect of tail-heaviness and supporting the notion of an inverted-U-shape effect of asymmetry
SARS-CoV-2 and male infertility: from short- to long-term impacts
Purpose: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic—caused by a new type of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)—has posed severe impacts on public health worldwide and has resulted in a total of > 6 million deaths. Notably, male patients developed more complications and had mortality rates ~ 77% higher than those of female patients. The extensive expression of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor and related proteins in the male reproductive tract and the association of serum testosterone levels with viral entry and infection have brought attention to COVID-19’s effects on male fertility. Methods: The peer-reviewed articles and reviews were obtained by searching for the keywords SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, endocrine, spermatogenesis, epididymis, prostate, and vaccine in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar from 2020–2022. Results: This review summarizes the effects of COVID-19 on the male reproductive system and investigates the impact of various types of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines on male reproductive health. We also present the underlying mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 affects male reproduction and discuss the potentially harmful effects of asymptomatic infections, as well as the long-term impact of COVID-19 on male reproductive health. Conclusion: COVID-19 disrupted the HPG axis, which had negative impacts on spermatogenesis and the epididymis, albeit further investigations need to be performed. The development of vaccines against various SARS-CoV-2 variations is important to lower infection rates and long-term COVID risks
