Smelling Caddy: Olfactory Narrative in the Sound and the Fury

    Get PDF
The Sound and the Fury, a long stream-of-consciousness novel written by American writer William Faulkner, mainly depicts a girl’s gradual degradation. This degradation emblems the decline of the Compson family and the collapse of the old moral order of southern American society in the first half of the twentieth century. This paper aims to analyze the olfactory narrative from the perspective of unnatural narratology. Firstly, it interprets the cultural symbolic meanings of the most representative odors in Caddy’s two different stages by employing unnatural narratology theory. Secondly, it explores the role of the olfactory narrative in the creation of Caddy’s image throughout this novel. This paper argues that the olfactory narrative endows Caddy with implicit cultural implications, pushes the plot of Caddy’s destiny forward, and enhances the narrative effect of this novel

IRRADIATION EFFECTS OF HT-9 MARTENSITIC STEEL

    Get PDF
High-Cr martensitic steel HT-9 is one of the candidate materials for advanced nuclear energy systems. Thanks to its excellent thermal conductivity and irradiation resistance, ferritic/martensitic steels such as HT-9 are considered for in-core applications of advanced nuclear reactors. The harsh neutron irradiation environments at the reactor core region pose a unique challenge for structural and cladding materials. Microstructural and microchemical changes resulting from displacement damage are anticipated for structural materials after prolonged neutron exposure. Consequently, various irradiation effects on the service performance of in-core materials need to be understood. In this work, the fundamentals of radiation damage and irradiation effects of the HT-9 martensitic steel are reviewed. The objective of this paper is to provide a background introduction of displacement damage, microstructural evolution, and subsequent effects on mechanical properties of the HT-9 martensitic steel under neutron irradiations. Mechanical test results of the irradiated HT-9 steel obtained from previous fast reactor and fusion programs are summarized along with the information of irradiated microstructure. This review can serve as a starting point for additional investigations on the in-core applications of ferritic/martensitic steels in advanced nuclear reactors

Video VS. audio as modes of promoting tourist destinations: The case of Hangzhou, China

This study tests the effects of predominantly verbal and predominantly visual advertisements on consumers\u27 knowledge, attribute beliefs, attitude toward the ad and toward the brand, and behavioral intentions about Hangzhou, a Chinese city being promoted as a tourist destination. An online experiment was conducted using a sample of 217 non-Chinese students who were randomly assigned to one of the two groups. The results suggest that verbal elements showed a greater influence on the acquisition of knowledge. The visual stimulus, however, was more effective in producing more positive attribute beliefs and attitudes toward the ad and the city. It also generated higher intentions to search for more information and to visit the city. The findings provide support to the dual component model, which posits that verbal and visual components generate attitudes toward the ad and attribute beliefs about a product that have a substantial bearing on attitude toward the brand. Attitude toward the verbal ad and attribute beliefs resulting from exposure to the visual ad significantly affected attitude toward Hangzhou as a potential city to visit. Attitude toward the visual ad and attribute beliefs developed after seeing it also were significant predictors of attitude toward Hangzhou as a destination city. Exposure to the verbal ad produced significant changes in intention to look for more information and to visit the city some day. The visual ad influenced intention to visit Hangzhou, but not the desire to search for more information about the city
