Non-Abelian Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands

Inspired by recent theoretical discovery of robust fractional topological phases without a magnetic field, we search for the non-Abelian quantum Hall effect (NA-QHE) in lattice models with topological flat bands (TFBs). Through extensive numerical studies on the Haldane model with three-body hard-core bosons loaded into a TFB, we find convincing numerical evidence of a stable ν=1\nu=1 bosonic NA-QHE, with the characteristic three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a quantized Chern number, and a robust spectrum gap. Moreover, the spectrum for two-quasihole states also shows a finite energy gap, with the number of states in the lower energy sector satisfying the same counting rule as the Moore-Read Pfaffian state.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect of Hard-Core Bosons in Topological Flat Bands

Recent proposals of topological flat band (TFB) models have provided a new route to realize the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) without Landau levels. We study hard-core bosons with short-range interactions in two representative TFB models, one of which is the well known Haldane model (but with different parameters). We demonstrate that FQHE states emerge with signatures of even number of quasi-degenerate ground states on a torus and a robust spectrum gap separating these states from higher energy spectrum. We also establish quantum phase diagrams for the filling factor 1/2 and illustrate quantum phase transitions to other competing symmetry-breaking phases.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Towards Successful Cloud Ordering Service

    Get PDF
Background: The rise of cloud services has led to a drastic growth of e-commerce and a greater investment in development of new cloud services systems by related industries. For SaaS developers, it is important to understand customer needs and make use of available resources at as early as the system design and development stage. Objectives: This study integrates E-commerce Systems (ECS) Success model and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) into empirical research of the critical factors for cloud ordering system success. Methods/Approach: A survey research is conducted to collect data on customer perceptions of the importance and performance of each attribute of the particular cloud ordering service. The sample is further divided according to the degree of use of online shopping into high-usage users and low-usage users in order to explore their views regarding the system and generate adequate coping strategies. Results: Developers of online ordering systems can refer to the important factors obtained in this study when planning strategies of product/service improvement. Conclusions: The approach proposed in this study can also be applied to evaluation of other kinds of cloud services systems

    A γ\gamma-ray Quasi-Periodic modulation in the Blazar PKS 0301-243?

We report a nominally high-confidence γ\gamma-ray quasi-periodic modulation in the blazar PKS 0301-243. For this target, we analyze its \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data covering from 2008 August to 2017 May. Two techniques, i.e., the maximum likelihood optimization and the exposure-weighted aperture photometry, are used to build the γ\gamma-ray light curves. Then both the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform are applied to the light curves to search for period signals. A quasi-periodicity with a period of 2.1±0.32.1\pm0.3 yr appears at the significance level of 5σ\sim5\sigma, although it should be noted that this putative quasi-period variability is seen in a data set barely four times longer. We speculate that this γ\gamma-ray quasi-periodic modulation might be evidence of a binary supermassive black hole.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures; Accepted for publication in Ap

Broad bandwidth waveguide polarizer via grating mediated mode conversion

A polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a four-layer slab waveguide is proposed, where a sub-wavelength grating is embedded between the waveguide core and the cladding. This grating not only affords Bragg momentum to tune the propagation constant of guiding modes but also converts the forward zero-order waveguide mode to the backward first one for a specific polarization. Thus, the incident light with polarization that satisfies the phase-matching condition is highly reflected in the waveguide, while other light with orthogonal polarization keeps intact and passes through it efficiently. Numerical simulations show that one can make the compact PBS for both polarizations with an extinction ratio higher than 35 dB, a waveband larger than 80 nm, a grating period tolerance of 20 nm, and a waveguide height tolerance of 80 nm. The revealed mode conversion mechanism via the sub-wavelength grating enriches the design of PBSs for integrated silicon waveguide chips

Structure and dynamics of a glass-forming binary complex plasma with non-reciprocal interaction

In this letter, we present the first numerical study on the structural and dynamical properties of a quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) binary complex plasma with Langevin dynamics simulation. The effect of interaction with non-reciprocity on the structure is investigated by comparing systems with pure Yukawa and with point-wake Yukawa interactions. The long-time alpha-relaxation for the latter system is revealed by plotting and analyzing the intermediate scattering function. The results clearly indicate that a q2D binary complex plasma is a suitable model system to study the dynamics of a glass former. The non-reciprocity of the interactions shifts the glass formation significantly but leads to the same qualitative signatures as in the reciprocal case
