On the "Security analysis and improvements of arbitrated quantum signature schemes"
Recently, Zou et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 042325 (2010)] pointed out that two
arbitrated quantum signature (AQS) schemes are not secure, because an
arbitrator cannot arbitrate the dispute between two users when a receiver
repudiates the integrity of a signature. By using a public board, they try to
propose two AQS schemes to solve the problem. This work shows that the same
security problem may exist in their schemes and also a malicious party can
reveal the other party's secret key without being detected by using the
Trojan-horse attacks. Accordingly, two basic properties of a quantum signature,
i.e. unforgeability and undeniability, may not be satisfied in their scheme
Testing Technicolor Models in Top Quark Pair Production at High Energy Photon Colliders
We study pseudo-Goldstone boson corrections to top quark pair production
rates in technicolor models with and without topcolor at the E=0.5 teV and 1.5
TeV photon colliders. We find that, for reasonable ranges of the parameters,
the corrections are large enough to be observable, and the corrections in
models with topcolor are considerably larger than those in models without
topcolor, and they are all significantly larger than the corresponding
corrections in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with tan(beta)
of the order of 1. So that the two kinds of technicolor models and the MSSM
with tan(beta) of the order of 1 can be experimentally distinguished.Comment: Version for publication in Phys.Rev.D with some references and

Pathologies in International Policy Transfer:The Case of the OECD Tax Transparency Initiative
ABSTRACT The importance of international organizations to the development and diffusion of
international policy norms is widely recognized but is increasingly tempered by an appreciation of
the pathologies of policy transfer. Using a case study of the OECD’s campaign to promote
transparency in global tax affairs, this paper identifies a new and relatively distinctive form of
dysfunctional policy transfer. Specifically it argues that international organizations face bureaucratic
incentives to promote weak or lowest common denominator standards in order to maximize
their prospects of brokering successful international agreements. However the paper also notes that
while international organizations may have a short-term interest in promoting weak standards, their
longer-term legitimacy is often tied to the effectiveness of the standards they promote. It is argued
that this dynamic often leads to incremental policy change
Comparison of Artificial Neural Network and Logistic Regression Models for Predicting In-Hospital Mortality after Primary Liver Cancer Surgery
BACKGROUND: Since most published articles comparing the performance of artificial neural network (ANN) models and logistic regression (LR) models for predicting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) outcomes used only a single dataset, the essential issue of internal validity (reproducibility) of the models has not been addressed. The study purposes to validate the use of ANN model for predicting in-hospital mortality in HCC surgery patients in Taiwan and to compare the predictive accuracy of ANN with that of LR model. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Patients who underwent a HCC surgery during the period from 1998 to 2009 were included in the study. This study retrospectively compared 1,000 pairs of LR and ANN models based on initial clinical data for 22,926 HCC surgery patients. For each pair of ANN and LR models, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves, Hosmer-Lemeshow (H-L) statistics and accuracy rate were calculated and compared using paired T-tests. A global sensitivity analysis was also performed to assess the relative significance of input parameters in the system model and the relative importance of variables. Compared to the LR models, the ANN models had a better accuracy rate in 97.28% of cases, a better H-L statistic in 41.18% of cases, and a better AUROC curve in 84.67% of cases. Surgeon volume was the most influential (sensitive) parameter affecting in-hospital mortality followed by age and lengths of stay. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: In comparison with the conventional LR model, the ANN model in the study was more accurate in predicting in-hospital mortality and had higher overall performance indices. Further studies of this model may consider the effect of a more detailed database that includes complications and clinical examination findings as well as more detailed outcome data
Abrogated cryptic activation of lentiviral transfer vectors
Despite significant improvements in lentivirus (LV) vector-based gene therapy there are still several safety risks using LV vectors including the potential formation of replication-competent LV particles. To address this shortcoming, we constructed a novel and safer gene transfer system using modified SIN-based LV gene transfer vectors. Central to our approach is a conditional deletion of the Ψ packaging signal after integration in the target genome. Here we demonstrate that after transduction of target cells, conventional SIN-based LV transfer vectors can still be mobilized. However mobilization is rendered undetectable if transductions are followed by a Cre/loxP-mediated excision of Ψ. Thus conditional elimination of the packaging signal may represent another advance in increasing the safety of LV vectors for gene therapeutic treatment of chronic diseases
Multiple-Clade H5N1 Influenza Split Vaccine Elicits Broad Cross Protection against Lethal Influenza Virus Challenge in Mice by Intranasal Vaccination
Background: The increase in recent outbreaks and unpredictable changes of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in birds and humans highlights the urgent need to develop a cross-protective H5N1 vaccine. We here report our development of a multiple-clade H5N1 influenza vaccine tested for immunogenicity and efficacy to confer cross-protection in an animal model. Methodology/Principal Findings: Mice received two doses of influenza split vaccine with oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant SP01 by intranasal administration separated by two weeks. Single vaccines (3 mg HA per dose) included rg-A/Vietnam/1203/ 2004(Clade 1), rg-A/Indonesia/05/2005(Clade 2.1), and rg-A/Anhui/1/2005(Clade 2.3.4). The trivalent vaccine contained 1 mg HA per dose of each single vaccine. Importantly, complete cross-protection was observed in mice immunized using trivalent vaccine with oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant SP01 that was subsequently challenged with the lethal A/OT/SZ/097/03 influenza strain (Clade 0), whereas only the survival rate was up to 60 % in single A/Anhui/1/2005 vaccine group. Conclusion/Significance: Our findings demonstrated that the multiple-clade H5N1 influenza vaccine was able to elicit a cross-protective immune response to heterologous HPAI H5N1 virus, thus giving rise to a broadly cross-reactive vaccine to potential prevention use ahead of the strain-specific pandemic influenza vaccine in the event of an HPAI H5N1 influenza outbreak. Polysaccharides from the root of Angelica sinensis promotes hematopoiesis and thrombopoiesis through the PI3K/AKT pathway
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dozens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulas have been used for promotion of "blood production" for centuries, and we are interested in developing novel thrombopoietic medicines from these TCMs. Our previous studies have demonstrated the hematopoietic effects of DangGui BuXue Tong (DBT), a formula composed of <it>Radix Angelicae Sinensis </it>and <it>Radix Astragali </it>in animal and cellular models. As a step further to identify and characterize the active chemical components of DBT, we tested the hematopoietic and particularly, thrombopoietic effects of polysaccharide-enriched fractions from the root of <it>Radix Angelicae Sinensis </it>(APS) in this study.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A myelosuppression mouse model was treated with APS (10 mg/kg/day). Peripheral blood cells from APS, thrombopoietin and vehicle-treated samples were then counted at different time-points. Using the colony-forming unit (CFU) assays, we determined the effects of APS on the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and megakaryocytic lineages. Using a megakaryocytic cell line M-07e as model, we analyzed the cellular apoptosis progression with and without APS treatment by Annexin V, Mitochondrial Membrane Potential and Caspase 3 assays. Last, the anti-apoptotic effect of APS on cells treated with Ly294002, a Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinse inhibitor (PI3K) was also tested.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In animal models, APS significantly enhanced not only the recovery of platelets, other blood cells and their progenitor cells, but also the formation of Colony Forming Unit (CFU). In M-07e cells, we observed the anti-apoptotic effect of APS. Treatment by Ly294002 alone increased the percentage of cells undergoing apoptosis. However, addition of APS to Ly294002-treated cells significantly reduced the percentage of cells undergoing apoptosis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>APS promotes hematopoiesis and thrombopoiesis in the mouse model. This effect likely resulted from the anti-apoptosis activity of APS and is likely to involve the PI3K/AKT pathway.</p
