Hypseloecus orientale Yeshwanth, 2014, sp. nov.
<i>Hypseloecus orientale</i> sp. nov. <p>(Figs 7, 8, 15, 16, 32–36, Table 1)</p> <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> Recognized by shining, dorsum with anterior half brown and posterior half dark brown or red; male endosoma elongate C-shaped with apex,attenuated or beak-like.</p> <p> <b>Description.</b> <i>Male.</i> Ovoid, elongate, with lateral corial margins concave; total length 2.36–2.45, width pronotum 1.15–1.17. COLORATION (fig.7): Head, pronotum, anterior half of hemelytra, clavus and scutellum pale brown; embolium red; corium posteriorly reddish brown; antennal segment I pale brown with red markings; legs completely red; ventrally body completely red. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Shining with sparse golden yellow, lanceolate sericeous scale-like setae, along with short recumbent reclinate black setae; thoracic pleura and abdomen ventrally with silvery white lanceolate scale-like setae. STRUCTURE: <b>Head</b>: Posterior margin concave, eyes not protuberant, antennae separated from eyes and arising at the level of ventral margin of eyes laterally, eyes occupying slightly more than half head height laterally. Pronotum: lateral margins straight and short with a erect spine-like setae anteriorly, humeral angles smoothly rounded, posterior margin straight; mesoscutum exposed and separated from scutellum by a transverse suture; scutellum flat. <b>Hemelytra</b>: Lateral margins weakly concave, covering the abdomen. Legs: femur short and swollen moderately. GENITALIA (Figs 32–36): <b>Pygophore</b>: Transverse, tapering distally and rounded at apex. <b>Endosoma</b>: Elongate, tubular, weakly sclerotized, C-shaped, apex attenuated; secondary gonopore with semicircular opening, subtended by short erect glassy spicules. <b>Phallotheca</b>: Elongate, apical region on ventral margin with a projection at apex, dorsal margin broad and curved. <b>Left paramere</b>: Weakly splayed out, anterior processes thumb-like curved, posterior processes basally broad, moderately elongate with apex weakly curved. <b>Right paramere</b>: Broad, flattened and tapering towards apex.</p> <p> <i>Female.</i> Head and anterior half of hemelytra, clavus and scutellum brown, posterior half of hemlytra including cuneus reddish brown; total length 2.59–2.68, width pronotum 1.19–1.21.</p> <p> <b>Distribution.</b> Know from a single locality Karnataka, Karahalli near to Nandi Hills.</p> <p> <b>Host.</b> Breeds on <i>Viscum orientale</i> (Figs 15, 16)</p> <p> <b>Etymology.</b> The species name is derived of, and is the host plant name.</p> <p> <b>Discussion.</b> Male genital characters of <i>H. orientale</i> appear close to <i>H. amyemi S</i> chuh & Menard, <i>H. amyemicola S</i> chuh & Menard, <i>H. neoamyemi S</i> chuh & Menard and <i>H. schuhi</i> Symonds, but differs from all the four species by absence of medial spine on endosoma, apex of endosoma long and attenuated and left paramere without any processes on dorsal anterior margin. Externally <i>H. orientale</i> can be distinguished by pale brown coloration on anterior half and posterior half dark brown to reddish brown, whereas <i>H. amyemi</i> is pale white, <i>H. amyemicola</i> is reddish brown overall, <i>H. neoamyemi</i> is blood red and <i>H. schuhi</i> is pale pinkish orange.</p> <p> <b>Material examined.</b> HOLOTYPE 1♂, INDIA: Karnataka: Devanahalli: Karahalli, 13°33’N, 77°68’E; 938m, 20.v.2014, <i>ex Viscum orientale,</i> Yeshwanth, H. Hypseloecus acutus Yeshwanth, 2014, sp. nov.
<i>Hypseloecus acutus</i> sp. nov. <p>(Figs 1, 2, 17–21, Table 1)</p> <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> Recognized by combination of brown and red coloration of the hemelytra, first segment of antenna brown; endosoma twisted at base, secondary gonopore with fringes of glassy spicules distad, apex flattened, broad.</p> <p> <b>Description.</b> <i>Male.</i> Elongate, parallel sided, total length 2.09, width pronotum 1.39. COLORATION (Fig. 1): General coloration of body reddish brown; first segment of antenna and scutellum brown or black; pronotum dark brown with pale brown areas in middle; labium and cuneus reddish; cuneal incisures pale; scent gland evaporatory area pale white; membrane infuscate with veins pale, meso- and metapleuron red, with black spots; all coxa white, femur brown at base and apex, with red or pale patches medially. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Dorsum with scattered silvery lanceolate sericeous setae along with short reclinate black setae; thoracic pleura and abdomen ventrally with clumps of silvery white lanceolate scale-like setae. STRUCTURE: <b>Head</b>: Broad, with posterior margin concave including eyes, confined close to anterior margin of pronotum; vertex weakly carinate; eyes weakly protuberant, occupying 3/4th of the head height laterally, antennae close to eyes, inserted at ventral margins of eyes. <b>Pronotum</b>: Lateral margins weakly concave, with a single erect spine-like setae, humeral angles rounded, posterior margin nearly straight; mesoscutum exposed, separated from scutellum by a weak suture; scent gland evaporatory area prominent. <b>Hemelytra:</b> Lateral margins weakly concave, broader than abdomen; <b>Legs</b>: Hind femur swollen weakly. GENITALIA (Figs 17–21): <b>Pygophore</b>: rounded, tapering distally; opening small, rounded. <b>Endosoma</b>: Elongate, J-shaped, curved, tubular, with sides thickened, apical region distad of secondary gonophore weakly sclerotized and flattened, secondary gonophore semicircular, subtended by tuft of long glassy spicules, median spine absent. <b>Phallotheca</b>: Elongate, broader in middle, with apex slender and pointed, finger-like. <b>Left paramere</b>: Posterior process elongate curved towards apex, anterior processes short thumb-like. <b>Right paramere</b>: Short and broad, with apex rounded.</p> <p> <i>Female.</i> Similar to male but more pale in colour (Fig. 2); first and second segment of antenna pale, femur with red markings. 2.68, width pronotum 1.42.</p> <p> <b>Distribution.</b> Know from the type locality Karnataka, north of Bangalore, Hessaraghatta</p> <p> <b>Host.</b> Collected on <i>Dendrophthoe</i> sp.</p> <p> <b>Etymology.</b> Named for its pointed phallotheca.</p> <p> <b>Discussion.</b> On the basis of male genitalia, <i>H. acutus</i> is closely related to <i>H. metamyemi S</i> chuh & Menard, but differs by curved endosoma, fattened apex and left paramere with curved posterior processes. <i>Hypseloecus spinosus</i> sp. nov. <p>(Figs 9, 10, 37–41, Table 1)</p> <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> Recognized by deep red color of the body; male genitalia with strongly splayed out left paramere and presence of medial spine on the endosoma.</p> <p> <b>Description.</b> <i>Male.</i> Elongate, parallel sided, more or less quadrate, lateral margins nearly straight; total length 2.41, width pronotum 1.82. COLORATION (Fig. 9): Body completely deep red, except for coxae pale white; membrane infuscate with veins pale; antennal segment I pale with variable red markings, segment II pale with apical third reddish brown, segments III and IV reddish brown; inner margins of eyes and vertex with pale white spots; meso- and metathorax with black patches; hind femur with white spots enclosing setae. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Dorsum with scattered or sparse silvery lanceolate sericeous scale-like setae, along with recumbent reclined black setae; thoracic pleura and abdomen ventrally with silvery white lanceolate scale-like setae. STRUCTURE: <b>Head</b>: Posterior margin of head including eyes concave, produced beyond anterior margin of pronotum, eyes not protuberant, occupying slightly more than half the head height in lateral view, antennae arising very close to eyes, on ventral margin of eyes laterally. <b>Pronotum</b>: Lateral margins weakly concave with single erect spine-like setae anteriorly, humeral angles rounded, posterior margin weakly concave; metathorasic scent gland evaporatory area prominent; mesoscutum exposed separated from scutellum by a transverse suture; scutellum flat. <b>Hemelytra</b>: Lateral margins straight, covering the abdomen; cuneus broadly triangular with a prominent cuneal incisures. <b>Legs</b>: Elongate femur cylindrical. GENITALIA (Fig. 37–41): <b>Pygophore</b>: Transverse, tapering and rounded distally. <b>Endosoma</b>: Elongate, tubular, J-shaped, apex membranous, lobe-like; secondary gonopore with semicircular opening, subtended by moderately long, erect glassy spicules; median spine present at mid-length, as a slender projection of moderate length. <b>Phallotheca</b>: Elongate, curved at middle, apex with two projections distally, ventral margin with a finger like projection and dorsal margin with short and rounded projection. <b>Left paramere</b>: Strongly splayed out; posterior processes curved ventrally, anterior processes splayed out and elevated. <b>Right paramere</b>: Short, flattened with curved outer margins.</p> <p> <i>Female.</i> Fitting the description of the male (Fig. 10); total length 2.42–2.64, width pronotum 1.22–1.29.</p> <p> <b>Distribution.</b> This species is widely distributed across Western Ghats of Karnataka, Coorg, Shimoga and Sirsi.</p> <p> <b>Host.</b> Associated with a species of <i>Dendrophthoe</i> hemeparasitic on mango trees.</p> <p> <b>Etymology.</b> Named for the presence of a medial spine on the endosoma.</p> <p> <b>Discussion.</b> <i>Hypseloecus spinosus</i> on the basis of male genitalic character appears close to <i>H. morobe</i> (Schuh) and H. <i>weirauchi</i> Schuh and Menard but differs from both the species by the presence of the medial spine. <i>Hypseloecus articulatus</i> sp. nov. <p>(Figs. 3, 4, 13, 14, 22–26, Table 1)</p> <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> Recognized by yellow coloration of the body dorsally and ventrally; endosoma very broad, heavily sclerotized with saw-like projections on inner and outer margins along with spine-like spicules medially and phallotheca with crenulations on dorsal surface apically.</p> <p> <b>Description.</b> <i>Male.</i> Elongate, ovoid, with lateral corial margins concave; total length 2.58–2.62, width pronotum 1.30–1.41. COLORATION (Fig. 3): Body dorsally and ventrally pale yellow; eyes reddish brown, membrane, corium at the junction of the claval suture and cuneus fuscous; lorum reddish, antennal segments I, II and III reddish brown, last segment dark brown; metathorasic scent gland evaporatory area pale white; legs fore, mid and hind femur with distinct red markings and row of black spots medially. SURFACE AND VESTITURE: Shining with sparse yellow lanceolate sericeous scale-like setae and recumbent reclinate black setae; thoracic pleura and abdomen ventrally with silvery scale-like setae; fore and mid coxa with spine-like black recumbent setae. STRUCTURE: <b>Head</b>: With posterior margin including eyes concave, eyes not protuberant; antennae distinctly separated from margins of eyes, arising at or below the ventral margins of eyes in lateral view; eyes occupying half the head height laterally. <b>Pronotum</b>: Lateral margins straight with a single erect spine-like setae anteriorly humeral angles sharply rounded, posterior margin nearly straight; mesoscutum exposed, separated from scutellum by a weak suture; scent gland evaporatory area prominent. <b>Hemelytra</b>: Lateral margins straight, broader than abdomen, cuneus with prominent cuneal incisure. <b>Legs</b>: Hind femur swollen moderate. GENITALIA (Figs. 22–26): <b>Pygophore</b>: Transverse, tapering and rounded distally. <b>Endosoma</b>: Broad, curved at base, apex flattened paddle-shaped, heavily sclerotized with few serrations on inner and outer margins and spine-like spicules on the tube, 1/4th from base; secondary gonopore with semicircular opening, subtended by long, glassy spicules. <b>Phallotheca</b>: Elongate, curved apically on the ventral margin, dorsal margin with crenulations. <b>Left paramere</b>: Not splayed out, anterior processes short, small finger-like, posterior processes apex weakly curved. <b>Right paramere</b>: Broad, flattened and tapering towards apex.</p> <p> <i>Female.</i> Fitting the description of the male; total length 2.59–2.75, width pronotum 1.35–1.37.</p> <p> <b>Distribution.</b> Know from a single locality Karnataka, Nandi Hills.</p> <p> <b>Host.</b> Breeds on <i>Viscum articulatum</i> (Fig.13, 14)</p> <p> <b>Etymology.</b> The species name is derived of, and is the host plant name.</p> <p> <b>Discussion.</b> <i>Hypseloecus articulatum</i> on the basis of male genitalic character appears close to <i>H. paramyemi</i> Schuh & Menard but differs by presence of serrations on inner and outer margins and spine-like spicules on the tube basally on the endosoma, secondary gonophores visible with semicircular opening and presence of crenulations on phallotheca, whereas in <i>H. paramyemi</i> endosoma is smooth and secondary gonophore is invisible and phallotheca is not crenulated. Diagnosis Recognized by the following characters: Dorsum pale golden brown, with a small diffuse brown spot on corium medioapically (Fig. 1A); antennal segments short, head twice as wide as length of segment I, segment II subequal to posterior width of pronotum; ninth abdominal segment ventrally with a pair of round black spots at sides (Figs 1B, 5B).
