A Lattice Boltzmann Model of Binary Fluid Mixture
We introduce a lattice Boltzmann for simulating an immiscible binary fluid
mixture. Our collision rules are derived from a macroscopic thermodynamic
description of the fluid in a way motivated by the Cahn-Hilliard approach to
non-equilibrium dynamics. This ensures that a thermodynamically consistent
state is reached in equilibrium. The non-equilibrium dynamics is investigated
numerically and found to agree with simple analytic predictions in both the
one-phase and the two-phase region of the phase diagram.Comment: 12 pages + 4 eps figure
Tree Streets property survey
As stated in the thesis project, "Increasing demands on decreasing financial resources, both public and private, are causing non-profit agencies to seriously examine their opportunities and threats in the accomplishment of their goals and objectives like never before. Developing, implementing, and monitoring a strategic plan that leads the agency to the successful completion of their mission has taken on new significance.
Fundamental to the completion of the various tasks an agency undertakes, is a complete, flexible, and up to date data base. Information has a short shelf life and the need to update information quickly is becoming increasingly important. The purpose of-this project was to create such a data base.
Within the delineated geographical boundaries of the Tree Streets neighborhood, residential properties range from the newly restored to the dilapidated. This neighborhood suffers from the highest crime rate in the City of Nashua, as well as associated problems. Key to the restoration of this entire area is a concerted effort by elected representatives, city officials, residents, and many others who share the common goal of a livable, safe, and healthy urban environment that contributes to the quality of life of the City as a whole.Over the last five years the economic profile of ^Nashua has evolved from a deep recession to modest growth level. This current period of growth may offer opportunities to those who are prepared and vigilant of the possibilities that accompany growth. While many factors contribute to the decision making process to pursue opportunities or to let them pass, being adequately prepared to make informed decisions is critical to this process. It's envisioned this project serve as a useful tool for those charged with these responsibilities." (Library-derived description)Yeomans, M. A. (1996). Tree Streets property survey. The influence of school staffs on primary PGCE trainee teachers' professional learning
This thesis is a multi-case study of the placement professional learning of fifteen primary
PGCE trauiees within the school-based part of teacher training. It is concerned with the
influence of individual staff, especially mentors and host class teachers, as well as of whole
staffs and sub-groups, on adult and pupil oriented aspects of teachers' jobs (though
excluding a detailed study of the development of subject knowledge or of specific
classroom skills). A participant observer strategy was used within a grounded theory
approach to develop agenda for semi-structured interviews with trainees. The main findings
are that trauiees leamt through four modes of learning: as observers, participating
observers, participants and observing participants. Self-reliance was important for trainees'
learning, but relationships with individual staff (especially mentors and host class teachers)
were important and constractive influences when such staff adopted a 'learner modeV of
intervention. Whole staffs were important influences on trainees' professional development
when trainees were accepted as fiill or quasi-staff members, particularly in terms of the
interadult dimensions of teachers' jobs. Trainees were expected to 'fit in' with staffs' wa.ys
of working, even when their value systems clashed with those of placement teachers. Then,
trainees were often constrained by a power imbalance implicit in their status as leamers.
Trainees responded by compHance, engagement, strategic compromise or nonconformity,
with engagement most likely to gain staff support and enhance trainees' learning.
Conclusions are that school-based training underestimates the complexity of workplace
learning, and that inequity is possible. Staff cultures influence powerfiilly both trainees'
learning and staffs' treatment of them. PGCE trainees tend not to become acculturated,
though sometimes at the cost of restricted capacities to leam. Learning about the uiteradult
dimensions of teachers' jobs is haphazard, and is largely ignored by official teacher training
curricula. Finally, specific reconunendations are made for trainees, placement schools,
university teacher trainees and national teacher training policies
Deliberation, Distraction, and the role of the unconscious in Multiple Cue Probability Learning
Many findings in cognitive psychology suggest that many decisions and judgments rely on processes that are unconscious, that these processes can be disrupted by conscious input, leading to poor decision making. A commonly paradigm has shown that decision makers who are distracted while deciding make better to make quick decisions. The distraction is thought to facilitate spontaneous unconscious processing, called the “deliberation without attention effect”, that lead to better decisions when the question is later revisited. This effect was tested in three studies on diagnostic judgments in a multiple cue probability learning paradigm. In three studies, the effect of rushed decision making, forced
deliberation, and distraction were tested on probability judgments, and on choices and
confidence judgments. Evidence suggested that subjects in the immediate decision were less
accurate than the other conditions, in decisions and judgments, despite higher levels of confidence, but equaled performance in other conditions when given make-work tasks in between decisions, which may have primed more careful or more deliberate thinking. The results did not make any strong theoretical implications for the deliberation without attention effect
Does venous thromboembolism prophylaxis affect the risk of venous thromboembolism and adverse events following primary hip and knee replacement?:A retrospective cohort study
BACKGROUND: The optimum chemical venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylactic agents following total hip and knee replacement (THR and TKR) remain unknown. NICE recommends multiple agents, including direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH), and aspirin. We assessed whether VTE prophylaxis affected the risk of VTE and adverse events following primary THR and TKR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 982 elective primary THRs (59%) and TKRs (41%) at a large tertiary centre during 2018. The primary outcome was any VTE (DVT and/or PE) within 90-days. Secondary outcomes were adverse events within 90-days (major bleeding and wound complications). The association between VTE prophylaxis and outcomes was assessed. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of VTE and adverse events were 2.7% (n = 27) and 15.2% (n = 136) respectively. The most common agents used were DOAC ± LMWH (50.7%, n = 498), followed by aspirin ± LMWH (35.5%, n = 349) and LMWH alone (4.7%, n = 46). The risk of VTE (aspirin ± LMWH = 3.7%, DOAC = 2.0%, LMWH = 2.2%) was not significantly different between agents (p = 0.294). The risk of any adverse event was significantly higher (p < 0.001) with aspirin ± LMWH (16.1%; n = 56) and LMWH (28.3%; n = 13) compared with DOACs ± LMWH (7.0%; n = 35) in TKRs only, there was no differences between agents for adverse events in THRs (p = 0.644). CONCLUSIONS: Choice of thromboprophylaxis did not influence the risk of VTE following primary THR and TKR. DOACs (+/− LMWH) were associated with the lowest risk of adverse events. Large multicentre trials are still needed to assess the efficacy and safety of these agents following THR and TKR
Queensland Stout Whiting Fishery 1991 TO 2002
The stout whiting (Sillago robusta) fishery in southern Queensland is restricted to offshore waters between Caloundra and Sandy Cape in depths ranging between 20 and 50 fathoms. The fishery consists of five licensed trawlers (T4 endorsement). The fishery is managed by means of a ‘industry agreed’ yearly Total Allowable Catch (TAC), which is reviewed annually and divided equally among the vessels. The TAC quota was set at 1000 tonnes for the managed area in 2002.
The stout whiting resource was assessed using a newly developed age-structured model, along side with the previous virtual population and surplus production models.
The new model was tuned simultaneously to standardised monthly-catch-rates and yearly patterns in the stout whiting catch age-structure. The limit reference point B/K
(the ratio of exploitable biomass in 2002 to the exploitable component of the virgin carrying capacity) was estimated to be at about 0.19 (B/K less than 0.2 is generally accepted as high risk of over exploitation). The results from all three models should be viewed cautiously as their uncertainty is high. Given the high uncertainty, any increase in TAC above 1000 t has high risk. In the last four years total catch has varied between 1178 t and 498 t. This year’s assessment has shown no increase in
recruitment and biomass after the catch levels of 881 t in 2000 and 855 t in 2002. The management strategy evaluation suggests this years TAC should range between 700t and 900t depending on the target management objectives of risk and yield from the fishery (Table 3.6). This Table 3.6 should be used to guide the decision on TAC setting and to understand how best to compromise the issues of risk (over fishing) and optimising yield (maximising catch and value in the fishery). Summary of the assessment is given in Table 1.1
At the Personality Disorders Institute we have been investigating the efficacy of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), a twice weekly manualized psychodynamic psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder compared to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Supportive Psychotherapy (SP) in a randomized clinical trial of 90 borderline patients. We will first present some developmental foundations of BPD, followed by a discussion of the theoretical foundations of TFP. We will then discuss patient characteristics that have an impact on outcome. We will present both clinical and empirical data in a discussion of individual cases that were representative of a sample of borderline patients treated in Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP).En el Personality Disorders Institute estudiamos la eficacia de la psicoterapia focalizada en la transferencia (PFT), una psicoterapia psicodinámica hecha manual, que se lleva a cabo dos veces por semana para las personas que sufren de trastornos de personalidad límite (TPL). Stabilization of active matter by flow-vortex lattices and defect ordering
Active systems, from bacterial suspensions to cellular monolayers, are
continuously driven out of equilibrium by local injection of energy from their
constituent elements and exhibit turbulent-like and chaotic patterns. Here we
demonstrate both theoretically and through numerical simulations, that the
crossover between wet active systems, whose behaviour is dominated by
hydrodynamics, and dry active matter where any flow is screened, can be
achieved by using friction as a control parameter. Moreover we discover
unexpected vortex ordering at this wet-dry crossover. We show that the self
organisation of vortices into lattices is accompanied by the spatial ordering
of topological defects leading to active crystal-like structures. The emergence
of vortex lattices, which leads to the positional ordering of topological
defects, suggests potential applications in the design and control of active
materials
