The impact of product delay and recall announcements on firm performance.

    No full text
Existing research has shown that new product introduction announcements are efficient, timely and credible source of information to stakeholders, regarding a firm’s future product actions and strategies. However, by delaying product introduction or making product recall, a firm may risk loss in sales and credibility.Master of Business Administration (Banking & Finance

The impact of internship on the professional development of accountancy undergraduates in Singapore.

    No full text
This study seeks to determine if undergoing internship affects the professional development of Accountancy students, through the exploration of different facets of internship experience. These facets are identified as: exposure to accounting profession, exposure to accounting work, exposure to professional challenges and dilemmas, formal training received; supervisory support received, and organizational climate. For the purpose of this study, we have focused on three main dimensions of professional development, namely attitudes toward a profession, professional motivation, and professional identification. A survey was administered to 209 students who were pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy/Double Degree in Accountancy & Business in Nanyang Technological University. Of the 209 students surveyed, 122 of them had completed a pre-internship survey. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), paired sample test, correlation analyses and multiple regression analyses were used to study the quantitative and qualitative data collected. Using the data, we investigated the relationships between the different facets of internship experience and changes in the dimensions of professional development. Contrary to our research questions, there was no support for the relationship proposed. Nonetheless, recommendations were provided for the universities on how the internship programme can be reshaped, in order to leverage on its benefits and enhance the professional development of students. Finally, limitations of this study and room for future research were also discussed.BUSINES

Self-generation and probability assessment of error explanations in analytical procedures.

    No full text
This study is an extension of Heiman's {1990}research. It examines an audit respondent's assessment of the likelihood of his self-generated error explanation for an observed fluctuation in a set of financial ratios during analytical review and the effects of a given set of plausible explanations on the respondent's initial likelihood assessment

Hedge fund investing : index return persistence and style portfolio performance 1994-2004.

    No full text
Our applied research reexamines the index return persistence and the active return performance of hedge fund style portfolios for the period from 1994 to 2004. The monthly return persistence in nine hedge fund indices is measured by Hurst Fractal exponent, and the style portfolio’s monthly performance is evaluated in terms of information ratio

Mitochondria dysfunction and bipolar disorder: From pathology to therapy

    No full text
Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the major psychiatric diseases in which the impairment of mitochondrial functions has been closely connected or associated with the disease pathologies. Different lines of evidence of the close connection between mitochondria dysfunction and BD were discussed with a particular focus on (1) dysregulation of energy metabolism, (2) effect of genetic variants, (3) oxidative stress, cell death and apoptosis, (4) dysregulated calcium homeostasis and electrophysiology, and (5) current as well as potential treatments targeting at restoring mitochondrial functions. Currently, pharmacological interventions generally provide limited efficacy in preventing relapses or recovery from mania or depression episodes. Thus, understanding mitochondrial pathology in BD will lead to novel agents targeting mitochondrial dysfunction and formulating new effective therapy for BD

Discovery of Dengue Virus NS4B Inhibitors

    No full text
The four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV-1 to -4) represent the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral pathogens in humans. No clinically approved vaccine or antiviral is currently available for DENV. Here we report a spiropyrazolopyridone compound that potently inhibits DENV both in vitro and in vivo. The inhibitor was identified through screening of a 1.8-million-compound library by using a DENV-2 replicon assay. The compound selectively inhibits DENV-2 and -3 (50% effective concentration [EC50], 10 to 80 nM) but not DENV-1 and -4 (EC50, >20 μM). Resistance analysis showed that a mutation at amino acid 63 of DENV-2 NS4B (a nonenzymatic transmembrane protein and a component of the viral replication complex) could confer resistance to compound inhibition. Genetic studies demonstrate that variations at amino acid 63 of viral NS4B are responsible for the selective inhibition of DENV-2 and -3. Medicinal chemistry improved the physicochemical properties of the initial “hit” (compound 1), leading to compound 14a, which has good in vivo pharmacokinetics. Treatment of DENV-2-infected AG129 mice with compound 14a suppressed viremia, even when the treatment started after viral infection. The results have proven the concept that inhibitors of NS4B could potentially be developed for clinical treatment of DENV infection. Compound 14a represents a potential preclinical candidate for treatment of DENV-2- and -3-infected patients.Published versio
