    Premise of the study: Species delimitation in parasitic organisms is challenging as traits used in the identification of species are often plastic and vary depending on the host. Here, we use species from a recent radiation of generalist hemiparasitic Euphrasia to investigate trait variation and trait plasticity. We test whether Euphrasia species show reliable trait differences, investigate whether these differences correspond to life history trade-offs between growth and reproduction, and quantify plasticity in response to host species. Methods: We perform common garden experiments to evaluate trait differences between eleven Euphrasia taxa grown on a common host, document phenotypic plasticity when a single Euphrasia species is grown on eight different hosts, and relate our observations to trait differences recorded in the wild. Key results: Euphrasia exhibit variation in life history strategies; some individuals transition rapidly to flower at the expense of early season growth, while others invest in vegetative growth and delay flowering. Life history differences are present between some species, though many related taxa lack clear-cut trait differences. Species differences are further blurred by phenotypic plasticity—many traits are plastic and change with host type or between environments. Conclusions: Phenotypic plasticity in response to host and environment confounds species delimitation in Euphrasia. When grown in a common garden environment it is possible to identify some morphologically distinct taxa, though others represent morphologically similar shallow segregates. Trait differences present between some species and populations demonstrates the rapid evolution of distinct life history strategies in response to local ecological conditions."Manyhosts.csv" contains morphological measurements from one Euphrasia arctica population from North Berwick, Scotland, grown with eight hosts.     The La dilution of the Kondo lattice CeCoIn_5 is studied. The scaling laws found for the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat reveal two well-separated energy scales, corresponding to the single impurity Kondo temperature T_K and an intersite spin-liquid temperature T^*. The Ce-dilute alloy has the expected Fermi liquid ground state, while the specific heat and resistivity in the dense Kondo regime exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior, which scales with T^*. These observations indicate that the screening of the magnetic moments in the lattice involves antiferromagnetic intersite correlations with a larger energy scale in comparison with the Kondo impurity case.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Metastable Dynamics of the Hard-Sphere System

    The reformulation of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of the liquid-glass transition which incorporates the element of metastability is applied to the hard-sphere system. It is shown that the glass transition in this system is not a sharp one at the special value of the density or the packing fraction, which is in contrast to the prediction by the conventional MCT. Instead we find that the slowing down of the dynamics occurs over a range of values of the packing fraction. Consequently, the exponents governing the sequence of time relaxations in the intermediate time regime are given as functions of packing fraction with one additional parameter which describes the overall scale of the metastable potential energy for defects in the hard-sphere system.     Joint T1 and Brain Fiber Log-Demons Registration Using Currents to Model Geometry

    International audienceWe present an extension of the diffeomorphic Geometric Demons algorithm which combines the iconic registration with geometric constraints. Our algorithm works in the log-domain space, so that one can efficiently compute the deformation field of the geometry. We represent the shape of objects of interest in the space of currents which is sensitive to both location and geometric structure of objects. Currents provides a distance between geometric structures that can be defined without specifying explicit point-to-point correspondences. We demonstrate this framework by registering simultaneously T1 images and 65 fiber bundles consistently extracted in 12 subjects and compare it against non-linear T1, tensor, and multi-modal T1+ Fractional Anisotropy (FA) registration algorithms. Results show the superiority of the Log-domain Geometric Demons over their purely iconic counterparts

    First order transition from correlated electron semiconductor to ferromagnetic metal in single crystalline FeSi1-xGex

    The phase diagram of FeSi1-xGex, obtained from magnetic, thermal and transport measurements on single crystals, shows a first-order transition from a correlated electron semiconductor to a ferromagnetic metal at a critical concentration, x ~ 0.25. The gap of the insulating phase strongly decreases with x. The specific heat coefficient appears to track the density of states of a Kondo insulator. The phase diagram is consistent with a correlation induced insulator-metal transition in conjunction with disorder on the Si/Ge ligand site

    The Pathway to Low Outlier Status in Venous Thromboembolism Events: An Analysis of Pancreatic Surgery in ACS NSQIP

    Introduction: Our institution’s hepatopancreaticobiliary service (HPBS) is a high-volume pancreatic surgery service, which has demonstrated consistently low rates of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared to similar institutions as reported by NSQIP. We sought to determine if the HPBS’s regimented multimodal VTE prophylaxis pathway plays a role in achieving consistently low VTE rates. Methods: We queried the ACS NSQIP Participant User File and our institution’s data from 2011-2016 for major pancreatic operations. We used Chi-squared analysis to compare the HPBS and national patient populations, and created a matched dataset based on preoperative patient factors. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on both the aggregate and matched data to determine independent risk factors for symptomatic VTE formation. Results: Among 36,435 NSQIP patients, 850 (2.3%) received surgery by the HPBS. VTE rates were significantly lower for the HPBS (2.0%) compared to the national cohort (3.5%) (p=0.018); this significance was seen in the matched cohort as well (p=0.040). Upon multivariate analysis, having an operation performed by the HPBS independently conferred lower odds of VTE formation in both the aggregate (OR=0.572, p=0.024) and matched (OR=0.530, p=0.041) cohorts. Discussion: The HPBS had statistically lower rates of symptomatic VTE compared to the national cohort as reported by NSQIP. We identified an independent protective effect of the HPBS on VTE formation, which we believe to be due, at least in part, to adherence to a high risk VTE prophylaxis pathway. This pathway could serve as a model for other institutions hoping to improve their VTE rates
