An atom-economic route to thiophenes and bithiophenes has been developed starting from the readily available <i>gem</i>-dialkylthio enynes. A range of functionalized thiophenes and bithiophenes, bearing a pendent vinylthio group, were obtained in good to high yields under mild conditions
