Computed tomography assessment of pancreatic steatosis in association with anthropometric measurements: A retrospective cohort study

Aim: Pancreatic steatosis is the fat accumulation in the pancreatic parenchyma. It is suggested that pancreatic fat infiltration may play an important role in the prognosis of diseases such as diabetes, malignancy and pancreatitis, leading to some inflammatory processes and fibrosis, and may even play an etiological role in the progress of pancreas-related diseases. However, a limited number of studies on pancreatic steatosis are available in the literature. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation of pancreatic steatosis with age, sex, hepatic steatosis, subcutaneous fat tissue and visceral fat tissue thickness. Methods: Hundred patients without a history of previously known pancreas disease or diabetes mellitus were included in the study. All patients had gone under abdominal tomography scan for a suspected kidney stone. Pancreas density, visceral and subcutaneous fat tissue thickness were reviewed retrospectively. The presence of coexisting hepatosteatosis was investigated. Results: Pancreatic steatosis was detected in 54% of 100 cases examined.  There were no significant difference between the pancreatic steatosis and normal pancreas groups in terms of gender and subcutaneous fat tissue thickness (p=0.115 and p=0.511, respectively). Pancreatic steatosis increased significantly with increasing age and visceral fat tissue thickness (p=0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). The incidence of hepatic steatosis was 42% in patients with pancreatic steatosis. Conclusion: According to our results, pancreatic steatosis increases with age and increased visceral fat tissue thickness. Thus, elderly patients with increased visceral fat tissue must be investigated for pancreatic steatosis

Case report A rare anatomical variation of the greater saphenous vein. Case report

Abstract The venous system has frequent anatomical variations. A good understanding of the venous anatomy is very important and proper evaluation of the venous system is crucial for the appropriate treatment of venous disorders. There are many variations of the greater saphenous vein at the level of the thigh, knee and leg. All variations of the saphenofemoral junction reported in the literature refer to the drainage of the greater saphenous vein into the common femoral vein. A very rare greater saphenous vein variation at the level of the saphenofemoral junction is defined and discussed in this case report

The Effects of Wintering in Different Climatic Regions of Turkey on Some Physiological Characteristic of Caucasian Honey Bee (Apis mellifera caucasica) Colonies

This study was conducted in two locations have different altitudes in the cities which have different climates as Ankara, Ordu, Erzurum, Mersin. The purpose of this work was to define some physiological properties of the bees such as the survivability of colony, wintering ability, usage of stoked honey and to discuss all these data. This study lasted two years and the second year was the continuation of the first year. At the beginning of the year, colonies which has the same genotype were equalized as number of combs covered with bees, stocked honey and brood areas and so on. According to the data analysis, it was obtained that the quantity of the stocked honey was not statistically significant by the region×altitude×year interaction. However, year×region and region×altitude interactions were statistically significant. Similarly, it was obtained that the wintering ability was not statistically significant by the region×altitude×year interaction. The only year×region interaction was statistically significant. Also, descriptive statistics obtained for the survivability of the colonies (%) during the first and second year was added statistically to this application. As a result, this work showed that migratory beekeepers could reevaluate the regions which have the microclimate properties in Aegean, Mediterranean, and the Black Sea. And new research should be made by adding different species of honeybees for the performance of overwintering in different climates
