    Full-Rate, Full-Diversity Adaptive Space Time Block Coding for Transmission over Rayleigh Fading Channels

    A full-rate, full-diversity Adaptive Space Time Block Coding (ASTBC) scheme based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is proposed for transmission over Rayleigh fading channels. The ASTBC-SVD scheme advocated is capable of providing both full-rate and full-diversity for any number of transmit antennas, Nt, provided that the number of receive antennas, Nr, equals to Nt. Furthermore, the ASTBC-SVD scheme may achieve an additional coding gain due to its higher product distance with the aid of the block code employed. In conjunction with SVD, the “water-filling” approach can be employed for adaptively distributing the transmitted power to the various antennas transmit according to the channel conditions, in order to further enhance the attainable performance. Since a codeword constituted by Nt symbols is transmitted in a single time slot by mapping the Nt symbols to the Nt transmit antennas in the spatial domain, the attainable performance of the ASTBC-SVD scheme does not degrade, when the channel impulse response values vary from one time slot to the next. Hence, the proposed ASTBC-SVD scheme is attractive in the context of both uncorrelated and correlated Rayleigh fading channels. The performance of the proposed scheme was evaluated, when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. Explicitly, an Eb/N0 gain of 2.5 dB was achieved by the proposed ASTBC-SVD scheme against Alamouti’s scheme [1], when employing Nt = Nr = 2 in conjunction with 8PSK

    A Turbo Detection and Sphere-Packing-Modulation-Aided Space-Time Coding Scheme

    Arecently proposed space-time block-coding (STBC) signal-construction method that combines orthogonal design with sphere packing (SP), referred to here as STBC-SP, has shown useful performance improvements over Alamouti’s conventional orthogonal design. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the performance of STBC-SP systems can be further improved by concatenating SP-aided modulation with channel coding and performing demapping as well as channel decoding iteratively. We also investigate the convergence behavior of this concatenated scheme with the aid of extrinsic-information-transfer charts. The proposed turbo-detected STBC-SP scheme exhibits a “turbo-cliff” at Eb/N0 = 2.5 dB and provides Eb/N0 gains of approximately 20.2 and 2.0 dB at a bit error rate of 10?5 over an equivalent throughput uncoded STBC-SP scheme and a turbo-detected quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulated STBC scheme, respectively, when communicating over a correlated Rayleigh fading channel.     Turbo Detection of Space-time Trellis-Coded Constant Bit Rate Vector-Quantised Videophone System using Reversible Variable-Length Codes, Convolutional Codes and Turbo Codes

    In this treatise we characterise the achievable performance of a proprietary video transmission system, which employs a Constant Bit Rate (CBR) video codec that is concatenated with one of three error correction codecs, namely a Reversible Variable-Length Code (RVLC), a Convolutional Code (CC) or a convolutional-based Turbo Code (TC). In our investigations, the CBR video codec was invoked in conjunction with Space-Time Trellis Coding (STTC) designed for transmission over a dispersive Rayleigh fading channel. At the receiver, the channel equaliser, the STTC decoder and the RVLC, CC or TC decoder, as appropriate, employ the Max-Log Maximum A-Posteriori (MAP) algorithm and their operations are performed in an iterative 'turbo-detection' fashion. The systems were designed for maintaining similar error-free video reconstruction qualities, which were found to be subjectively pleasing at a Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 30.6~dB, at a similar decoding complexity per decoding iteration. These design criteria were achieved by employing differing transmission rates, with the CC- and TC-based systems having a 22% higher bandwidth requirement. The results demonstrated that the TC-, RVLC- and CC-based systems achieve acceptable subjective reconstructed video quality associated with an average PSNR in excess of 30~dB for Eb/N0E_b/N_0 values above 4.6~dB, 6.4~dB and 7.7~dB, respectively. The design choice between the TC- and RVLC-based systems constitutes a trade-off between the increased error resilience of the TC-based scheme and the reduced bandwidth requirement of the RVLC-based scheme

    Depression as a modifiable factor to decrease the risk of dementia

    Depression is an accepted risk factor for dementia, but it is unclear if this relationship is causal. This study investigated whether dementia associated with depression decreases with antidepressant use and is independent of the time between exposure to depression and the onset of dementia. We completed a 14-year longitudinal study of 4922 cognitively healthy men aged 71-89 years, and collected information about history of past depression, current depression and severity of depressive symptoms. Other measures included use of antidepressants, age, education, smoking and history of diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and stroke. The onset of dementia and death during follow-up was ascertained via the Western Australian Data Linkage System. A total of 682 men had past (n = 388) or current (n = 294) depression. During 8.9 years follow-up, 903 (18.3%) developed dementia and 1884 (38.3%) died free of dementia. The sub-hazard ratios (SHRs) of dementia for men with past and current depression were 1.3 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.0, 1.6) and 1.5 (95% CI = 1.2, 2.0). The use of antidepressants did not decrease this risk. Compared to men with no symptoms, the SHRs of dementia associated with questionable, mild-to-moderate and severe depressive symptoms were 1.2 (95% CI = 1.0, 1.4), 1.7 (95% CI = 1.4, 2.2) and 2.1 (95% CI = 1.4, 3.2), respectively. The association between depression and dementia was only apparent during the initial 5 years of follow-up. Older men with history of depression are at increased risk of developing dementia, but depression is more likely to be a marker of incipient dementia than a truly modifiable risk factor

    Liu Shaoqi, the Chairman of the People's Republic from 1959 to 1968. had a coherent set of theories of transition which was distinctive from Maoism. Liu's theory resembled state capitalism, and the theory of transition of Nikolai Bukharin and Lenin, who believed that as long as the major industries were in the hands of the proletariat, the existence of a limited market economy and the retention of private ownership would not hinder a nation's progress towards socialism. Expanding from this principle, Liu believed that if the proletariat were in a ruling position, the purge of the bourgeoisie was not necessary as they could be educated and transformed into socialists. Therefore, Liu disliked class struggle, and did not see the ideological fractions within the Party as a threat to the central authority. The bottom line is that if the Communists' grip on power had not been challenged, a certain level of multiplicity should be tolerated. He distrusted mass mobilisation, and believed that transition to socialism could only be successful if it was under the guidance of the Party. As the nation's Chairman who carried out his job as Mao's front man, Liu had still managed to insert his line of thoughts into mainstream politics in disguised form, though from time to time he had to succumb to Mao's political power. Most writers from the West would regard Liu as Mao's puppet, particularly in view of his involvement in the Great Leap; whereas most Chinese writers from the PRC would try to portray him as the pioneer of market economy in support of China's economic policy. This study aims to show that beneath the facade of Mao's faithful lieutenant, Liu had been applying his own thoughts of transition in a coherent and defiant manner

    Retrofitting Crude Oil Refinery Heat Exchanger Networks to Minimise Fouling While Maximising Heat Recovery

    The use of fouling factors in heat exchanger design and the lack of appreciation of fouling in traditional pinch approach has often resulted badly designed crude preheat networks that are expensive to maintain. The development of thermal and pressure drop models for crude oil fouling has allowed its effects to be quantified, so that techno-economic analyses can be performed and various design options compared. Application of these fouling models is carried out on two levels: on the assessment of adding extra area to individual exchangers, and the design of a complete network using the Modified Temperature Field Plot. Application to a refinery case study showed that both at the exchanger and network levels, designing for maximum heat recovery using traditional pinch approach results in the least efficient heat recovery over a time period when fouling occurs
