Exploring Access and Equity in Malaysia’s Private Higher Education

    Get PDF
Private higher education institutions (PrHEIs) are utilized to complement public provision due to financial constraints faced in public provision. However, increasing private provision has raised interesting questions as to who gets educated in these PrHEIs. Is increasing private supply enlarging the circle of opportunity to reach those who might otherwise have been unable to enter university or college? In other words, has the explosion in private supply translated into greater inclusion or increased exclusion? This paper explores access and equity issues in Malaysia’s private higher education system. Malaysia is an interesting case study due to the significant presence of PrHEIs in the country and their contribution toward student enrolment. The findings show that the Malaysian government has provided considerable financial support for the development of PrHEIs in the country, through the provision of incentives, subsidized loans, and scholarships. Quality assurance efforts further enhance the development of private provision, as student loans and scholarships are only provided for students on accredited programs. Therefore, PrHEIs have widened access and equity in the country with the help of government support. Despite this, Malaysia’s model of providing access and equity through private provision may be unsustainable, due to the poor repayment record of student loans and the economic need to reduce the fiscal deficit of the government.malaysia education; higher education; private higher education

Wireless Broadcast with Network Coding in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks: DRAGONCAST

    Get PDF
Network coding is a recently proposed method for transmitting data, which has been shown to have potential to improve wireless network performance. We study network coding for one specific case of multicast, broadcasting, from one source to all nodes of the network. We use network coding as a loss tolerant, energy-efficient, method for broadcast. Our emphasis is on mobile networks. Our contribution is the proposal of DRAGONCAST, a protocol to perform network coding in such a dynamically evolving environment. It is based on three building blocks: a method to permit real-time decoding of network coding, a method to adjust the network coding transmission rates, and a method for ensuring the termination of the broadcast. The performance and behavior of the method are explored experimentally by simulations; they illustrate the excellent performance of the protocol

Application of membrane separation in biotechnology

    Get PDF
Membrane technology emerges as one of the most important separation methods, which have captured the attention of industries, related to biochemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical, and food industries. Due to the current intensive development and expansion, membrane technology is also rapidly gaining market recognition and application in Malaysia. Factors accelerating the positive growth of membrane market in Malaysia include economic factors, technology, support industries and awareness in environmental safety and health. Therefore, this paper seeks to review the separation mechanism, advantages and applications of synthetic polymeric membranes in biotechnology

The relationship between career strategies and career success

This study examined the relationship between career strategies and career success. The three dimensions that measured career strategies were enhancing promotability, strengthening external contacts, and improving image with superiors. Meanwhile, the dimension that measured career success was subjective career success. Data were gathered through questionnaires administered to employees at a manufacturing organisation (n=185). Correlation and regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between career strategies and career success. The results indicated that there were no relationship between career strategies and career success. Only two of the career strategy dimensions were positively correlated with career success, namely strengthening external contacts and improving image with superiors. The multi-regression results suggested that improving image with superiors was the most important factor in influencing individual’s career success. The findings were discussed and recommendations for future research were also addressed

Let (G,G)(G,G') be a type I irreducible reductive dual pair in Sp(WR)\mathrm{Sp}(W_{\mathbb{R}}). We assume that (G,G)(G,G') is in the stable range where GG is the smaller member. Let KK and KK' be maximal compact subgroups of GG and GG' respectively. Let g=kp\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{p} and g=kp\mathfrak{g}' = \mathfrak{k}' \oplus \mathfrak{p}' be the complexified Cartan decompositions of the Lie algebras of GG and GG' respectively. Let K~{\widetilde{K}} and K~{\widetilde{K}}' be the inverse images of KK and KK' in the metaplectic double cover Sp~(WR)\widetilde{\mathrm{Sp}}(W_\mathbb{R}) of Sp(WR){\mathrm{Sp}}(W_\mathbb{R}). Let ρ\rho be a genuine irreducible (g,K~)(\mathfrak{g},{\widetilde{K}})-module. Our first main result is that if ρ\rho is unitarizable, then except for one special case, the full local theta lift ρ=Θ(ρ)\rho' = \Theta(\rho) is equal to the local theta lift θ(ρ)\theta(\rho). Thus excluding the special case, the full theta lift ρ\rho' is an irreducible and unitarizable (g,K~)(\mathfrak{g}',{\widetilde{K}}')-module. Our second main result is that the associated variety and the associated cycle of ρ\rho' are the theta lifts of the associated variety and the associated cycle of the contragredient representation ρ\rho^* respectively. Finally we obtain some interesting (g,K~)(\mathfrak{g},{\widetilde{K}})-modules whose K~{\widetilde{K}}-spectrums are isomorphic to the spaces of global sections of some vector bundles on some nilpotent KCK_\mathbb{C}-orbits in p\mathfrak{p}^*
