Role of food-drug interactions in neurological and psychological diseases
Given that foods and nutrients have been shown to influence the pharmacokinetics of drugs, drugs may cause changes in the nutritional status of patients and their response to a given drug. Food‑drug interactions are particularly relevant for drugs used to treat neurological and psychological diseases. This review provides an overview of food‑drug interaction in the treatment of neurological and psychological diseases. A literature search was carried out by collecting data from different reviews, reports, and original articles on general or specific drug interactions with food, in patients with a variety of neurological and psychological diseases. Based on our review, we found that food‑drug interactions may alter the expected impact of drug, or cause the development of a drug toxicity. Nutritional status of the patients may also be affected, particularly a change in body weight caused by a change appetite. Metabolism, absorption, and excretion of foods may also be altered, and nutritional insufficiencies may occur. Recent studies show that diet can have a strong influence on gut microbiota and thus, alter drug pharmacokinetics. Therefore, microbiota alterations should also be considered while assessing food‑drug interactions. Knowledge of food‑drug interactions is critical for improving health of patients with neurological and psychological diseases, and also for improving effectiveness of treatments
Assessment Of Nutrıtıonal Status, Obsessıve Eatıng Habıts And Eatıng Dısorders In Exercısıng Indıvıduals
Because studies on eating disorders in people exercising regularly are limited, in study, it was
aimed to evaluate nutrition status, healthy eating obsession and eating disorders in the exercising
individuals. This study was conducted with 102 men and 104 women exercising at least twice a
week. General information in the study was recorded using a face-to-face interview method with a
questionnaire form. Individual anthropometric measurements were taken and body composition
was measured by BIA. In addition, 24-hour retrospective food consumption records of the
individuals were taken and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (YEDÖ), REZZY
Eating Disorder Questionnaire, ORTO-15 Test, Stunkard Scale and International Physical Activity
Questionnaire - Short Form were performed on participants. At the end of the study, it was
determined that 1,5% of the subjects had an eating disorder at clinical importance level, 34,0% had
an eating disorder risk and 81,6% had orthorexic tendency. In males, there was a negative
correlation between eating disorder and percentage of carbohydrates coming from the energy level
(p<0,05). In males, there was a negative correlation between eating disorder at clinical significance
level and percentage of carbohydrates from energy (p<0,05). As the score of eating disorder at
clinical importance level increased, waist and hip circumference increased in men (p <0,05). As the
score of eating disorder at clinical importance level increased, body weight, BMI, body fat
percentage and fat free mass increased in women (p<0,01). Men with risk of eating disorders had
higher body weight, BMI and body fat percentage than males with no risk of eating disorder
(p<0,05). Body weiht, waist circumference, waist/height ratio (p<0,05), BMI, body fat percentage
and neck circumference (p<0,01) were higher in women with eating disorder risk than those
without eating disorder risk. Energy and percentage of energy coming from carbohydrates was
higher in men with orthorexia nervosa than those without orthorexia nervosa (p<0,05). In women,
the percentage of energy coming from the protein is higher (p<0,01). While there was no difference
in anthropometric measurements and body composition according to orthorexic tendency in males,
body weight, body fat percentage (p<0,05) and BMI (p<0,01) were higher in women with
orthorexic tendency than those without orthorexic tendency. In conclusion, it has been determined
that individuals who exercise regularly are at risk of eating disorder and orthorexic tendency
