Purpose: To investigate whether the total triterpenoids extracted from Psidium Guajava leaves (TTPGL) attenuate the development of diabetic peripheral neuropathy in rats by regulating the NF-κB pathway of the inflammatory process and its signaling mediators. Methods: All the Sprague Dawley rats used were maintained in a clean environment on a 12 h light/12h dark cycle. High-fat feeding and intraperitoneal injection of 40 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) were used to induce diabetes in the rats. The rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: diabetic mellitus (DM) group; TTPGL - 30 group, TTPGL - 60 group and TTPGL - 120 group treated by intragastric administration (i.g) with 30, 100 and 120 mg/kg/day TTPGL, respectively. The well-established drug, rosiglitazone (RSG, 3 mg/k/d, i.g.), was used as positive control. Normal rats served as control group. Nerve conduction velocity and sensitive tests were measured on weeks 1, 4 and 8. After 8 weeks administration, expression of pro-inflammatory molecules (TNF - α, IL - 6 and iNOS) and tissue proteins (Akt, IKKα, and NF – κB - p65) were evaluated to assess biochemical changes. Results: Compared to DM group, TTPGL (especially 120 mg / kg dose) treatment improved (p < 0.05) physical functions and provided neuronal protection in high - fat/streptozotocin - induced peripheral neuropathy rats. We found that the expressions of several pro - inflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor - α (TNF - α), IL - 6 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) were highly suppressed (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) by TTPGL in sciatic nerve. Mechanism analysis indicated that the ameliorative effect of TTPGL, in part, is through suppression of the expression of pro - inflammatory cytokines by NF - κB pathway mediation. Conclusion: TTPGL offers a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Keywords: Triterpenoids, Psidium Guajava, Diabetic peripheral neuropathy, Pro inflammatory cytokines, NF-κB pathwa

The Cancer Immunoediting concept has provided critical insights suggesting dual functions of immune system during the cancer initiation and development. However, the dynamics and roles of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the pathogenesis of breast cancer remain unclear. Here we utilized two murine breast cancer models (4T1 and E0771) and demonstrated that both CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells were increased and involved in immune responses, but with distinct dynamic trends in breast cancer development. In addition to cell number increases, CD4(+) T cells changed their dominant subsets from Th1 in the early stages to Treg and Th17 cells in the late stages of the cancer progression. We also analyzed CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell infiltration in primary breast cancer tissues from cancer patients. We observed that CD8(+) T cells are the key effector cell population mediating effective anti-tumor immunity resulting in better clinical outcomes. In contrast, intra-tumoral CD4(+) T cells have negative prognostic effects on breast cancer patient outcomes. These studies indicate that CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells have opposing roles in breast cancer progression and outcomes, which provides new insights relevant for the development of effective cancer immunotherapeutic approaches

Abstract Background Predictive abilities of cardiovascular biomarkers to renal function decline are more significant in Chinese community-dwelling population without glomerular filtration rate (GFR) below 60 ml/min/1.73m2, and long-term prospective study is an optimal choice to explore this problem. Aim of this analysis was to observe this problem during the follow-up of 5 years. Methods In a large medical check-up program in Beijing, there were 948 participants with renal function evaluated at baseline and follow-up of 5 years. Physical examinations were performed by well-trained physicians. Blood samples were analyzed by qualified technicians in central laboratory. Results Median rate of renal function decline was 1.46 (0.42–2.91) mL/min/1.73m2/year. Rapid decline of renal function had a prevalence of 23.5% (223 participants). Multivariate linear and Logistic regression analyses confirmed that age, sex, baseline GFR, homocysteine and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) had independently predictive abilities to renal function decline rate and rapid decline of renal function (p  0.05 for all). Conclusions Homocysteine and NT-proBNP rather than hs-cTnT had independently predictive abilities to rapid decline of renal function in Chinese community-dwelling population without GFR below 60 ml/min/1.73m2. Baseline GFR was an independent factor predicting the rapid decline of renal function. Arterial stiffness and compliance had no independent effect on rapid decline of renal function. This analysis has a significant implication for public health, and changing the homocysteine and NT-proBNP levels might slow the rapid decline of renal function

As an advanced technology, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), combined with the internet of things (IoT) devices, can effectively extend the online cycle of the terminal. To cope with the fluctuation of energy harvesting by the hybrid access points (H-AP), the energy cooperation base station is introduced to realize the sharing of renewable energy. In this paper, we study the SWIPT-enabled IoT networks with cooperation. Our goal is to maximize the energy efficiency of the system, and at the same time, we need to meet the energy harvesting constraints, user quality of service (QoS) constraints and transmission power constraints. We jointly solve the power allocation, time switching and energy cooperation problems. Because this problem is a nonlinear programming problem, it is difficult to solve directly, so we use the alternating variable method, the iterative algorithm is used to solve the power allocation and time switching problem, and the matching algorithm is used to solve the energy cooperation problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has obvious advantages in energy efficiency performance compared with the comparison algorithm. At the same time, it is also proved that the introduction of energy cooperation technology can effectively reduce system energy consumption and improve system energy efficiency

In this article, we prove that the ⟨p,q⟩ condition holds, first by using the Fuchs index of the complex Kawahara equation, and then proving that all meromorphic solutions of complex Kawahara equations belong to the class W. Moreover, the complex method is employed to get all meromorphic solutions of complex Kawahara equation and all traveling wave exact solutions of Kawahara equation. Our results reveal that all rational solutions ur(x+νt) and simply periodic solutions us,1(x+νt) of Kawahara equation are solitary wave solutions, while simply periodic solutions us,2(x+νt) are not real-valued. Finally, computer simulations are given to demonstrate the main results of this paper. At the same time, we believe that this method is a very effective and powerful method of looking for exact solutions to the mathematical physics equations, and the search process is simpler than other methods

Meloidogyne aberrans sp. nov. (Nematoda: Meloidogynidae), a new root-knot nematode parasitizing kiwifruit in China.

High infection rates of roots of wild kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis Planch) and soil infestation by a root-knot nematode were found in Anshun, GuiZhou Province, China. Morphology, esterase phenotype and molecular analyses confirmed that this nematode was different from previously described root-knot nematodes. In this report, the species is described, illustrated and named Meloidogyne aberrans sp. nov. The new species has a unique combination of characters. A prominent posterior protuberance, round and faint perineal pattern and a medium-length stylet (13.6-15.5 ÎĽm) characterized the females. Second-stage juveniles (J2) were characterized by a smooth lip region with distinctly protruded medial lips and a depression in outline at the oral aperture, a relatively long stylet (15.9-16.8 ÎĽm), four incisures in the lateral field and a very short, even poorly defined, hyaline tail terminus (2.2-5.5 ÎĽm). More incisures (11-15) existed in the lateral field of males, and the stylet and spicules of males were 18.2-19.6 ÎĽm and 22.7-36.8 ÎĽm long respectively. Egg masses were typically produced within the roots of kiwifruit. The new species had a rare Est phenotype, S2. Phylogenetic trees inferred from SSU, LSU D2D3, ITS, and partial coxII-16S rRNA revealed that M. aberrans sp. nov. was within the Meloidogyne clade and was distinguished from all described root-knot nematodes. Moreover, from histopathological observations, M. aberrans sp. nov. induced the formation of multinucleate giant cells

Water quality problems in the Xiaowan Reservoir due to a recently built dam of upper Mekong River have became major ecological and economic concerns. The main goal of this work was thus to describe the present water quality and metazooplankton dynamics and to evaluate the effects of damming on aquatic ecosystem in the super reservoir. The water quality including conductivity, turbidity, Chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and metazooplankton communities were surveyed along the 30 km away from the dam in the reservoir from 2011 to 2012. Throughout our study, most of the water quality parameters showed clear temporal changes. The total nitrogen and phosphorus showed mean values of 0.9 and 0.04 mg L–1 at different sites. The dominated species of zooplankton showed typical seasonal succession. The most important factor in the determination of zooplankton throughout the year is water temperature and Chlorophyll a. The spatial distribution of water quality parameters and zooplankton communities fluctuated considerably among different sites. However, it is difficult to explain these spatial changes which may relate to the unstable water conditions. Our results showed that the area along the 30 km away from the dam of Xiaowan Reservoir belonged to lake-type environment. More attention should be paid on the aquatic ecosystems of the reservoirs which belong to the gorge area with high mountains and steep valleys
