    Inheritance between Shengjing zhijie,and Guxin Shenging -mainly of part of the Matthew Gospels

    Emmanuel Diaz (1552-1610) translated Shenging zhijie (聖経直解) in the first year of the Qing Dynasty (1636). He translated a part of the four Gospels from the original Latin text into Chinese, and added notations. Around 1800, the Jesuit Louis Antoine de Poirot (1735-1813) translated the Old and New Testaments, and collected them in the text Guxin Shenging (古新聖経). He also used the Latin Vulgate Bible and translated into the vernacular Chinese.     A discourse analytic study of #FixTheCountry on Ghanaian Twitter

    This paper analyzes tweets produced during the 'fix the country' campaign on Ghanaian Twitter. It illustrates how the affordances of social media can empower campaigners and how linguistic choices, even on digital platforms, can be conditioned by sociocultural context, spatiotemporal factors and local politics. The findings reveal three main discursive strategies utilized in the tweets to construct the protest as a discourse of contestation intended to resist social inequalities and promote a shared vision: (1) depicting the Ghanaian government as irresponsible, (2) portraying the Ghanaian people as victims and (3) issuing a clarion call to action. These strategies were framed with various linguistic resources, and they enabled the protesters to recruit support for their objectives, mobilize the masses for social action and lay the foundation for an offline demonstration. The paper holds implications for the burgeoning scholarship on framing processes and the discursive strategies of online social movements

    The main objective of my research is to analyze the relevance of the translations carried out by different Jesuit missionaries and the cultural interactions at work within Poirot\u27s Guxin Shengjing, as well as their implication on cultural exchanges between China and the "West" in the middle and late Qing.     Mutual encounters and linguistic exchanges : A comparative approach to Ricci and Ruggieri’s Dicionário

    The exploration of the Chinese language by missionaries is recognised as an important foundation of European Sinology. Previous studies on the history of Chinese missionary linguistics have focused on the early missionaries\u27 contribution to the analysis of Chinese grammar, such as Martino Martini\u27s (Wei Kuangguo 衛匡國, 1614-1661) Grammatica Sinica (漢語語法), Francisco Varo\u27s (Wan Jiguo 萬濟國, 1627-1687) Arte de la lengua Mandarina (官話文典) and Joseph Henri Marie de Prémare\u27s (Ma Ruose 馬若瑟, 1666-1736) Notitia Linguae Sinicae (漢語劄記). This notwithstanding, much less attention has been devoted to early missionaries\u27 research of dialects, to determine the concept of "standard" Chinese. In this paper, I analyse some lexical features of the Dicionário Português-Chinês (Portuguese-Chinese Dictionary, 1583-1588), composed by Michele Ruggieri (Luo Mingjian 羅明堅, 1543-1607) and Matteo Ricci (Li Madou 利瑪竇, 1552-1610). I argue that both authors creatively and intelligently adapted Western rhetoric to their Chinese writings, to make Christianity more accessible to their different audiences in China. To conclude, I discuss some linguistic features of the Chinese style adopted by Ricci and Ruggieri in their Dicionário; as the first European-Chinese dictionary written, it can be considered the main instrument to show that rhetoric played a major role in the shaping of Jesuit\u27 language and readers from late Ming to Qing China.内田慶市教授 井上泰山教授 退休記念
