A Manga-Driven System Requirements Development PBL Exercise
We conducted a Project-Based Learning (PBL)-type exercise incorporating
Japanese cartoon (manga) techniques into Requirements Development (RD)
processes. Manga has established techniques, such as those for character
setting and story development, that we thought are also valid for RD processes.
Using this manga-driven method, students were able to clarify high-level
project goals early in the development life-cycle, and succeeded in defining
high quality and unique system ideas.Comment: SEEM201
Gravitational Radiation Reaction to a Particle Motion
In this paper, we discuss the leading order correction to the equation of
motion of the particle, which presumably describes the effect of gravitational
radiation reaction. We derive the equation of motion in two different ways. The
first one is an extension of the well-known formalism by DeWitt and Brehme
developed for deriving the equation of motion of an electrically charged
particle. In contrast to the electromagnetic case, in which there are two
different charges, i.e., the electric charge and the mass, the gravitational
counterpart has only one charge. This fact prevents us from using the same
renormalization scheme that was used in the electromagnetic case. To make clear
the subtlety in the first approach, we then consider the asymptotic matching of
two different schemes, i.e., the internal scheme in which the small particle is
represented by a spherically symmetric black hole with tidal perturbations and
the external scheme in which the metric is given by small perturbations on the
given background geometry. The equation of motion is obtained from the
consistency condition of the matching. We find that in both ways the same
equation of motion is obtained. The resulting equation of motion is analogous
to that derived in the electromagnetic case. We discuss implications of this
equation of motion.Comment: 25 pages revtex fil
Transport modal choice by multinational firms : firm-level evidence from Southeast Asia
We examine transport modal decision by multinational firms to shed light on the role of freight logistics in multinational activity. Using a firm-level survey in Southeast Asia, we show that foreign ownership has a significantly positive and quantitatively large impact on the likelihood that air/sea transportation is chosen relative to truck shipping. This result is robust to the shipping distance, cross-border freight, and transport infrastructure. Both foreign-owned exporters and importers also tend to use air/sea transportation. Thus, our analysis presents a new distinction between multinational and domestic firms in their decision over transport modes.International business enterprises, Industrial management, Transportation, Costs, Southeast Asia, Transport mode, Logistics, Multinational firms, Multinomial logit
Applying Geographically Weighted Regression to Conjoint Analysis: Empirical Findings from Urban Park Amenities
The objective of this study is to develop spatially-explicit choice model and investigate its validity and applicability in CA studies. This objective is achieved by applying locally-regressed geographically weighted regression (GWR) and GIS to survey data on hypothetical dogrun facilities (off-leash dog area) in urban recreational parks in Tokyo, Japan. Our results show that spatially-explicit conditional logit model developed in this study outperforms traditional model in terms of data fit and prediction accuracy. Our results also show that marginal willingness-to-pay for various attributes of dogrun facilities has significant spatial variation. Analytical procedure developed in this study can reveal spatially-varying individual preferences on attributes of urban park amenities, and facilitates area-specific decision makings in urban park planning.Choice experiments, conjoint analysis, dogrun, geographically weighted regression, spatial econometrics, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
Are trading partners complementary in international trade?
We use a unique dataset on trading transactions at the firm level to investigate a complementary effect in international transactions between sellers and buyers; trading transactions are more likely to be international when both sellers and buyers are large in size than when either sellers or buyers are large. Our econometric analysis provides evidence for the complementary effect between trading partners on the likelihood of international trade, which is most prominent for exports from North to South.Self-selection, Firm heterogeneity, Matching, Developing countries, Developed countries, International trade, Business enterprises
Study of the Large-scale Temperature Structure of the Perseus Cluster with Suzaku
We report on a study of the large-scale temperature structure of the Perseus
cluster with Suzaku, using the observational data of four pointings of 30'
offset regions, together with the data from the central region. Thanks to the
Hard X-ray Detector (HXD-PIN: 10 - 60 keV), Suzaku can determine the
temperature of hot galaxy clusters. We performed the spectral analysis, by
considering the temperature structure and the collimator response of the PIN
correctly. As a result, we found that the upper limit of the temperature in the
outer region is 14 keV, and an extremely hot gas, which was reported for
RXJ 1347.5-1145 and A 3667, was not found in the Perseus cluster. This
indicates that the Perseus cluster has not recently experienced a major merger.Comment: 17 pages, 25 figures, accepted for Publications of the Astronomical

Black Hole Perturbation
We present analytic calculations of gravitational waves from a particle
orbiting a black hole. We first review the Teukolsky formalism for dealing with
the gravitational perturbation of a black hole. Then we develop a systematic
method to calculate higher order post-Newtonian corrections to the
gravitational waves emitted by an orbiting particle. As applications of this
method, we consider orbits that are nearly circular, including exactly circular
ones, slightly eccentric ones and slightly inclined orbits off the equatorial
plane of a Kerr black hole and give the energy flux and angular momentum flux
formulas at infinity with higher order post-Newtonian corrections. Using a
different method that makes use of an analytic series representation of the
solution of the Teukolsky equation, we also give a post-Newtonian expanded
formula for the energy flux absorbed by a Kerr black hole for a circular orbit.Comment: 120 pages ptptex file. To appear in Progress of Theoretical Physics
