Human-Computer Interaction Research and Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research and Industry Practices
In this paper, I will discuss my own experience and approaches to enhancing students\u27 learning in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) classes by adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates academic research and industry practice. Due to the inherent interdisciplinarity of HCI, and to foster a set of soft skills known in Interdisciplinary Studies as the cognitive toolkit, I invite expertise from the other departments at my university as well as industry professionals to give lectures, facilitate workshops, and oversee projects. These collaborations have produced several insights and have had a positive impact on the participants
Strong photo-absorption by a single quantum wire in waveguide-transmission spectroscopy
We measured the absorption spectrum of a single T-shaped, 14x6 nm
lateral-sized quantum wire embedded in an optical waveguide using
waveguide-transmission spectroscopy at 5 K. In spite of its small volume, the
one-dimensional-exciton ground state shows a large absorption coefficient of 80
/cm, or a 98 % absorption probability for a single pass of the 500-um-long
waveguide.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Room-temperature excitonic absorption in quantum wires
We measured absorption spectra of T-shaped quantum wires at room temperature
using waveguide-transmission spectroscopy. Strong and narrow room-temperature
one-dimensional-exciton absorption peak was observed, which shows peak modal
absorption coefficient of 160 cm per 20 wires with -factor of
, width of 7.2 meV, and strong polarization anisotropy.Comment: 3pages, 3figure, 1tabl
Imaging of emission patterns in a T-shaped quantum wire laser
Spatially and spectrally resolved microscopic images of spontaneous and
stimulated emissions are imaged at the mirror facets of a GaAs T-shaped quantum
wire laser with high uniformity. Laser emission from the one-dimensional ground
state reveals a circular image located at the core of a T-shaped optical
waveguide but significantly smaller in area than the low power spontaneous
emission from the same waveguide. These images unambiguously allow assignment
of all spontaneous and laser emissions to the wire ground state and respective
intersecting wells in the structure.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Mucin-producins Lung Cancer and Response to Gefitinib.
A53-year-01d woman who was hypoxemic due to primary lung adenocarcinoma with both pleuritis and pericarditis carcinomatosa was treated with gefitinib,an inhibitor of the epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase. The tumor seemed to produce mucin because the extremely high serum KL-6 and almost normal Sp-D values on admission. After 3 days of treatment, the patient became asymptomatic and oxygen was discontinued. The response to this drug was remarkable on chest CT findings.Mucin overproduction could offer a candidate marker to determine the patient subset displaying good responseto gefitinib
Penetration of the sigmoid colon to the posterior uterine wall secondary to diverticulitis: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Penetration of the colon to the posterior uterine wall secondary to diverticulitis is unusual, with diagnostic methods not yet established. Non-invasive imaging, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging may help to establish a proper diagnosis, but confirmation may be reached only after surgical exploration.

Case presentation

We report the case of a 78-year-old Japanese woman who presented with a low grade fever and mild diarrhea which occurred two or three times a week. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a capsular lesion including an air structure with a diameter of 5 cm, between the posterior aspect of the uterine body and the sigmoid colon. A gastrograffin enema and colonoscopy demonstrated a giant diverticulum of the sigmoid colon with no evidence of malignancy. These data confirmed the diagnosis of diverticulitis complicated by a giant diverticulum. Because of a relapsing fever after therapy with antibiotics, the patient had en bloc surgical treatment of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and sigmoid colon, the organs involved in the diverticulitis, followed by an uneventful recovery.

Conclusion

This is a rare case report of penetration of the sigmoid colon to the posterior uterine wall secondary to diverticulitis.</p
Radial Transport Characteristics of Fast Ions Due to Energetic-Particle Modes inside the Last Closed-Flux Surface in the Compact Helical System
The internal behavior of fast ions interacting with magnetohydrodynamic bursts excited by energetic ions has been experimentally investigated in the compact helical system. The resonant convective oscillation of fast ions was identified inside the last closed-flux surface during an energetic-particle mode (EPM) burst. The phase difference between the fast-ion oscillation and the EPM, indicating the coupling strength between them, remains a certain value during the EPM burst and drives an anomalous transport of fast ions
Optical Identification of the ASCA Lynx Deep Survey: An Association of QSOs and a Supercluster at z=1.3?
Results of optical identification of the ASCA Lynx deep survey are presented.
Six X-ray sources are detected in the 2-7 keV band using the SIS in a 20'x20'
field of view with fluxes larger than ~4x10^{-14} erg s-1 cm-2 in the band.
Follow-up optical spectroscopic observations were made, and five out of six
sources are identified with AGNs/QSOs at redshifts of 0.5-1.3. We also identify
two more additional X-ray sources detected in a soft X-ray band with AGNs/QSOs.
It is found that three QSOs identified are located at z~1.3. Two rich clusters
and several groups of galaxies are also placed at the same redshift in the
surveyed field, and projected separations between the QSOs and the clusters are
3-8 Mpc at the redshift.Comment: 15 pages with 3 figures. Accepted to Ap
