    Stellar cooling limits on light scalar boson revisited

    We revisit the stellar cooling limits on the light scalar boson whose coupling to the Standard Model particles is described by its mixing with the Higgs boson. Strong constraints have been obtained from the electron-nucleus bremsstrahlung process and the resonant plasma effect in the medium. We find that the bremsstrahlung contribution from the electron and nucleus scattering is of similar magnitude to the plasma mixing effect including the off-resonant mixing. The constraints on the scalar coupling are found to be about three orders of magnitude weaker than the previous evaluations. For white dwarfs, the stellar cooling constraint is even more suppressed due to the Pauli blocking effect. We obtain limits on the Higgs-scalar mixing angle of 10−10−10−910^{-10}-10^{-9} in the region where the scalar mass is lighter than about 10 keV.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures; updated figures and added some reference

    By inoculating E. coli B into the semisynthetic medium we conducted shaking culture, and observed alterations of the total phospholipid contents and the amounts of individual phospholipid components in various stages of growth. The results are briefly summarized as follows. 1. The total phospholipid content has been found to be greater during early culture period, while it decreases as the growth age advances. 2. Phosphatidyl ethanolamine gradually increase as the culture period approaches the stationary phase. 3. Phosphatidic acid and phosphatidyl glycerol decrease precipitously as growth age advances. 4. Cardiolipin shows the maximum content in the middle log phase when the growth rate is most speedy.</p

    Effect of propranolol on regional myocardial function in anesthetized open-chest dogs with myocardial ischemia

    Effects of propranolol on ischemic segmental function were studied in anesthetized open-chest dogs. Two segment-length gauges were used for measuring the regional myocardial function: one was sutured on to the left ventricular surface perfused by the anterior descending coronary artery (ischemic zone) and the other was on to that perfused by the circumflex coronary artery (normal zone). A bolus of propranolol (0.5 mg/kg) was injected into the right femoral vein. Five min later, the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) was completely occluded for one mine and thereafter released. Then a second coronary occlusion for 20 min was performed; an interval of 20 min was allowed between two occlusions. Propranolol, in the ischemic segment, apparently decreased the extent of paradoxical lengthening in the late systole following one min LAD occlusion, and facilitated improvement of segmental function after release of the occlusion. Moreover, the extent of abnormal stretching induced by 20 min occlusion during early systole, was also reduced by propranolol pretreatment. In contrast, compensatory increase in shortening by the normal segment was disturbed by propranolol. These results suggest that propranolol might exert a favourable influence on the segmental myocardial function during either transient or maintained myocardial ischemia.</p

    Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay for Early Diagnosis of Viral Infection

    Viral reactivation is one of the most serious complications for immunocompromised patients. Under immunosuppressive conditions, some viruses can be reactivated solely or simultaneously and may thus cause life-threatening infection. Therefore, the prompt and proper diagnosis of viral reactivation is important for the initiation of preemptive therapy. For this purpose, we recently developed a multiplex-virus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The multiplex PCR assay is designed to qualitatively measure the genomic DNA of 12 viruses at once: cytomegalovirus (CMV), human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6), HHV-7, HHV-8, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), BK virus (BKV), JC virus (JCV), parvovirus B19 (ParvoB19), herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and hepatitis B virus (HBV). When a specific PCR signal is obtained, the viral load is determined by a quantitative real-time PCR. The qualitative multiplex and quantitative real-time PCR procedures take only 3 hours to complete. With this assay system, we can identify viremia at the early stage and thereby prevent it from progressing to overt and symptomatic viral infection in immunocompromised patients, such as those receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

    Intermittent parathyroid hormone 1-34 induces oxidation and deterioration of mineral and collagen quality in newly formed mandibular bone

    Intermittent parathyroid hormone (PTH) administration is known to promote bone healing after surgical procedures. However, the mechanism and influence of PTH on the mineral and collagen quality of the jaw are not well understood. Most studies have focused on analyzing the bone density and microstructure of the mandible, and have insufficiently investigated its mineral and collagen quality. Oxidative stress activates osteoclasts, produces advanced glycation end products, and worsens mineral and collagen quality. We hypothesized that PTH induces oxidation and affects the mineral and collagen quality of newly formed mandibular bone. To test this, we examined the mineral and collagen quality of newly formed mandibular bone in rats administered PTH, and analyzed serum after intermittent PTH administration to examine the degree of oxidation. PTH administration reduced mineralization and worsened mineral and collagen quality in newly formed bone. In addition, total anti-oxidant capacity in serum was significantly decreased and the oxidative-INDEX was increased among PTH-treated compared to vehicle-treated rats, indicating serum oxidation. In conclusion, intermittent administration of PTH reduced mineral and collagen quality in newly formed mandibular bone. This effect may have been induced by oxidation

    Fluorescence-guided bone resection by using Visually Enhanced Lesion Scope in diffuse chronic sclerosingosteomyelitis of the mandible: clinical and pathological evaluation

    Diffuse chronic sclerosingosteomyelitis (DCSO) is a refractory disease, becausethe etiology and pathogenesis remain poorly understood and to determine the border betweenunhealthy boneandhealthybone is difficult. However, progressive inflammation, clinical symptoms and a high recurrence rate of DCSO were the reasons for surgical treatment. We report a case of a 66-year old woman with DCSO of the right side of mandible who was treated with hemimandibulectomy and simultaneous reconstruction by vascularized free fibula flap. After preoperative administration of minocycline for 1 month, the bone fluorescence was successfully monitored by using a Visually Enhanced Lesion Scope (VELscope®). Intraoperatively, we could determine the resection boundaries. We investigated the clinical and histopathological findings. The fluorescence findings were well correlated with histopathological findings. Using a VELscope®was handy and useful to determine the border between DCSO lesion andhealthybone. The free fibula flap under the minocycline-derived bone fluorescence by using a VELscope®offered a good quality of mandibular bone and the successful management of an advanced and refractory DCSO

    Surgical Resection of Hepatic Cystic Echinococcosis Impaired by Preoperative Diagnosis

    Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a rare afferent infectious disease in Japan. This paper reports a case of a hepatic cyst being diagnosed after surgical resection. A 40-year-old Syrian male was admitted for evaluation of a hepatic cyst. Serum antibodies of echinococcosis were negative. Enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a large cystic lesion, 9 cm in diameter, in the left lateral sector of the liver, which had many honeycomb-like septa and calcified lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging of this lesion revealed high intensity in the T2 weighted image. We preoperatively diagnosed this lesion as cystadenocarcinoma or CE and performed a left hepatectomy. Pathological examination revealed the presence of protoscolices in the fluid of the cysts and led to a diagnosis of this lesion as CE. In conclusion, on seeing patients with huge hepatic cysts who come from an epidemic area, we should consider hepatic CE
