Drive Video Analysis for the Detection of Traffic Near-Miss Incidents

Because of their recent introduction, self-driving cars and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) equipped vehicles have had little opportunity to learn, the dangerous traffic (including near-miss incident) scenarios that provide normal drivers with strong motivation to drive safely. Accordingly, as a means of providing learning depth, this paper presents a novel traffic database that contains information on a large number of traffic near-miss incidents that were obtained by mounting driving recorders in more than 100 taxis over the course of a decade. The study makes the following two main contributions: (i) In order to assist automated systems in detecting near-miss incidents based on database instances, we created a large-scale traffic near-miss incident database (NIDB) that consists of video clip of dangerous events captured by monocular driving recorders. (ii) To illustrate the applicability of NIDB traffic near-miss incidents, we provide two primary database-related improvements: parameter fine-tuning using various near-miss scenes from NIDB, and foreground/background separation into motion representation. Then, using our new database in conjunction with a monocular driving recorder, we developed a near-miss recognition method that provides automated systems with a performance level that is comparable to a human-level understanding of near-miss incidents (64.5% vs. 68.4% at near-miss recognition, 61.3% vs. 78.7% at near-miss detection).Comment: Accepted to ICRA 201

This paper summarizes the actions of class improvement and curriculum management at the Hiroshima Prefectural Hatsukaichi Special Needs School. Based on the Hiroshima “Learning Reform” Action Plan formulated by the Hiroshima Prefectural Board of Education in December 2014, the “Learning Reform Association” was formulated at the Hatsukaichi Special Needs School in order to promote class improvements comprehensively. This association was organized by the research department, the academic affairs department, and administrative positions of the school in order to discuss how to improve teaching methodologies and class activities based on the direction of the most recently revised version of the education guidelines by the MEXT. In 2016, this association has finally composed Hatsukaichi Special Needs School version of the“ Learning Reform” Action Plan. This action plan focuses on the teaching plan and unit (subject) plan used in daily class activities and creates the evaluation form to assess students’ qualities and abilities that teachers want to nurture for students, which are the work ability, cooperation, application, motivation, and knowledge. In addition, the surveys to evaluate the quality of the evaluation form were repeatedly conducted for teachers every school year to make it a better format. Based on these systematic activities, the Hatsukaichi Special Needs School has finally built the framework of class improvement and curriculum management by positioning teaching plan, unit (subject) plan, lesson making materials, etc. into the PDCA cycles of improving classes and curriculum

Dietary supplementation with perilla seed oil, a vegetable oil rich in α -lin- olenic acid, inhibits the generation of leukotrienes(LTs) by leucocytes in patients with bronchial asthma. We examined the factors that affect the suppression of LT generation by leucocytes with perilla seed oil-rich supplementation in patients with asthma, by comparing the clinical features of patients with asthma, whose generation of leukotriene (LT) C4 was suppressed by dietary supplementation with perilla seed oil (n-3 fatty acids) (group A), with those of patients who showed no suppression of LTC4 generation (group B). Group A showed a significant increase in the generation of LTB4 and L TC4 by leucocytes after corn oil-rich supplementation (n-6 fatty acids), and a significant decrease in the generation of LTB4 and LTC4 after perilla seed oil-rich supplementation (n-3 fatty acid). However, this was not observed in group B. The level of serum IgE and peak expiratory flow (PEF) in group A were significantly higher than in group B. Furthermore, the serum levels of LDL-cholesterol, β-lipoprotein and phospholipid were significantly lower in group A than in group B. These results suggest that the clinical features differ between these two asthmatic populations with respect to suppression of LTB4 and LTC4 generation by n-3 fatty acids in perilla seed oil-rich supplementation.a-リノレン酸の豊富なエゴマ油の食事は気管支喘息患者の白血球ロイコトリエン(LT)産生能を抑制する。

Psoriatic Inflammation Facilitates the Onset of Arthritis in a Mouse Model

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a seronegative, inflammatory joint disease associated with psoriasis. In most patients with PsA, skin lesions precede arthritis; however, the causality of skin inflammation for the development of arthritis remains unclear. Gp130F759/F759 knock-in (F759) mice develop autoimmune arthritis after 1 year of age through persistent signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) activation due to impairment in SOCS3-dependent negative regulation. Here, we crossed F759 mice with K5.Stat3C transgenic mice, in which keratinocytes express constitutive active Stat3 (Stat3C), leading to generation of psoriasis-like skin change. F759 mice harboring the K5.Stat3C transgene not only had aggravated skin lesions but also spontaneously developed arthritis with high penetrance in adjacent paws as early as 3 weeks of age. The joint lesions included swelling of the peripheral paws and nail deformities contiguous with the skin lesions, closely resembling PsA. Histopathologic study revealed enthesitis and bone erosions, with mononuclear cell infiltrates. Quantitative reverse transcriptase–PCR (RT–PCR), immunohistochemical analyses, and flow cytometry showed upregulation of the IL-23/T helper type 17 (Th17) pathway in affected joints. Furthermore, enforced generation of psoriasis-like skin inflammation by topical treatment with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) in F759 mice induced swelling of the underlying joints. This animal model renders psoriatic inflammation as the driver of arthritis and helps to further understand the pathogenesis of PsA

Purpose: To investigate whether intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and/or non-Gaussian diffusion parameters are associated with distant disease-free survival (DDFS) in patients with invasive breast cancer. Methods: From May 2013 to March 2015, 101 patients (mean age 60.0, range 28-88) with invasive breast cancer were evaluated prospectively. IVIM parameters (flowing blood volume fraction [ɪᴠɪᴍ] and pseudodiffusion coefficient [D*]) and non-Gaussian diffusion parameters (theoretical apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC] at a b value of 0 s/mm² [ADC₀] and kurtosis [K]) were estimated using a diffusion-weighted imaging series of 16 b values up to 2500 s/mm². Shifted ADC values (sADC₂₀₀-₁₅₀₀) and standard ADC values (ADC₀-₈₀₀) were also calculated. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to generate survival analyses for DDFS, which were compared using the log-rank test. Univariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess any associations between each parameter and distant metastasis-free survival. Results: The median observation period was 80 months (range, 35-92 months). Among the 101 patients, 12 (11.9%) developed distant metastasis, with a median time to metastasis of 79 months (range, 10-92 months). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that DDFS was significantly shorter in patients with K > 0.98 than in those with K ≤ 0.98 ( = 0.04). Cox regression analysis showed a marginal statistical association between K and distant metastasis-free survival ( = 0.05). Conclusion: Non-Gaussian diffusion may be associated with prognosis in invasive breast cancer. A higher K may be a marker to help identify patients at an elevated risk of distant metastasis, which could guide subsequent treatment

Background Simulation-based education and peer-assisted learning (PAL) are both known as useful educational methods. Previous research has reported that combining these two methods are effective for training medical residents in short-term evaluation. This study was aimed to evaluate the middle- to long-term effects of simulation-based education combined with PAL on the performance of medical residents during emergency department duties. Methods This study was designed as a case-control study and conducted over three years at Okayama University Hospital in Japan. Postgraduate-year-one medical residents were assigned to three groups: a simulation group that received simulation-based education, a lecture group that received traditional lecture-based education, and a control group that received no such prior trainings. Prior training in emergency department duties using PAL was performed as an educational intervention for the simulation and lecture groups during the clinical orientation period. The residents' medical knowledge was assessed by written examinations before and after the orientation. The performance of residents during their emergency department duties was assessed by self-evaluation questionnaires and objective-assessment checklists, following up with the residents for three months after the orientation period and collecting data on their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd emergency department duties. All the datasets collected were statistically analyzed and compared by their mean values among the three groups. Results A total of 75 residents were included in the comparative study: 27 in the simulation group, 24 in the lecture group, and 24 in the control group. The simulation and lecture groups obtained significantly higher written examination scores than the control group. From the self-evaluation questionnaires, the simulation group reported significantly higher satisfaction in their prior training than the lecture group. No significant differences were found in the emergency department performance of the residents among the three groups. However, when evaluating the improvement rate of performance over time, all three groups showed improvement in the subjective evaluation, and only the simulation and lecture groups showed improvement in the objective evaluation.ConclusionSimulation-based education combined with PAL is effective in improving the knowledge and satisfaction of medical residents, suggesting the possibility of improving work performance during their emergency department duties

Angina Simultaneously Diagnosed with the Recurrence of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) mainly affects young adults and can have a potential impact on social functioning. As this syndrome is associated with endothelial dysfunction, the heart can be damaged via ischemia due to endothelial damage. This might potentially lead to heart failure, which accounts for approximately 20% of deaths among patients with ME/CFS. While cardiac ischemia is thought be a pathophysiologically important manifestation of this syndrome, this is not yet reported. Herein, we present a case of a young female with newly diagnosed vasospastic or microvascular angina and concurrent exacerbation of ME/CFS severity. Her anginal symptoms, including exertional chest pain and transient chest discomfort, mimicked those of ME/CFS but were relieved after the administration of a calcium channel blocker. We emphasize the possibility of concurrent angina and exacerbation of ME/CFS and the importance of detecting cardiac ischemia to avoid unfavorable outcomes

Dependence of shape selectivity for para-xylene production by toluene disproportionation on conditions of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of tetramethoxysilane on MFI (ZSM-5) zeolite were investigated in detail. The CVD after pelletization was necessary to obtain 0.7–1 mm particles with high selectivity. The influences of preparation conditions on the selectivity were investigated in detail to find the optimum conditions. The parent zeolite with small number of Brønsted acid sites on the external surface brought the high selectivity after the CVD. The catalyst prepared in the optimized conditions showed the selectivity 99.7% at ca. 10% of the toluene conversion
