Spontaneous alloying in binary metal microclusters - A molecular dynamics study -
Microcanonical molecular dynamics study of the spontaneous alloying(SA),
which is a manifestation of fast atomic diffusion in a nano-sized metal
cluster, is done in terms of a simple two dimensional binary Morse model.
Important features observed by Yasuda and Mori are well reproduced in our
simulation. The temperature dependence and size dependence of the SA phenomena
are extensively explored by examining long time dynamics. The dominant role of
negative heat of solution in completing the SA is also discussed. We point out
that a presence of melting surface induces the diffusion of core atoms even if
they are solid-like. In other words, the {\it surface melting} at substantially
low temperature plays a key role in attaining the SA.Comment: 15 pages, 12 fgures, Submitted to Phys.Rev.
Electrodynamic trapping of spinless neutral atoms with an atom chip
Three dimensional electrodynamic trapping of neutral atoms has been
demonstrated. By applying time-varying inhomogeneous electric fields with
micron-sized electrodes, nearly strontium atoms in the state
have been trapped with a lifetime of 80 ms. In order to design the electrodes,
we numerically analyzed the electric field and simulated atomic trajectories in
the trap, which showed reasonable agreement with the experiment.Comment: 4pages, 4figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Preparation Of Gas Separation Membranes By Plasma Polymerization With Fluoro Compounds
Plasma polymerization coatings were applied for the preparation of gas separation membranes. Mainly fluoro compounds were used as coating materials. The membranes showed good separation characteristics with high flux for gaseous systems. The plasma polymerization composite parameter given by W/FM plays an important role in obtaining excellent separation characteristics. The correlation between the conversion rate DR/FM, where DR is the deposition rate of plasma polymer, and W/FM is useful to consider the plasma polymer character under the different plasma polymerization conditions (discharge power W and monomer flow rate F). The proper conditions for membrane preparation lie in the intermediate region between the region in which the monomer flow rate is deficient and that in which the discharge power is deficient. Furthermore, the plasma polymerization coatings with the higher molecular weight monomer gave the higher separation characteristics. Plasma polymer composite membranes in this study showed superiority for the molecular sieve type of separation over the solution-diffusion type of separation. © 1984
Nonpolar resistance switching of metal/binary-transition-metal oxides/metal sandwiches: homogeneous/inhomogeneous transition of current distribution
Exotic features of a metal/oxide/metal (MOM) sandwich, which will be the
basis for a drastically innovative nonvolatile memory device, is brought to
light from a physical point of view. Here the insulator is one of the
ubiquitous and classic binary-transition-metal oxides (TMO), such as Fe2O3,
NiO, and CoO. The sandwich exhibits a resistance that reversibly switches
between two states: one is a highly resistive off-state and the other is a
conductive on-state. Several distinct features were universally observed in
these binary TMO sandwiches: namely, nonpolar switching, non-volatile threshold
switching, and current--voltage duality. From the systematic sample-size
dependence of the resistance in on- and off-states, we conclude that the
resistance switching is due to the homogeneous/inhomogeneous transition of the
current distribution at the interface.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, REVTeX4, submitted to Phys. Rev. B (Feb. 23,

CP, T and CPT violation in future long baseline experiments
I give a short overview about the possibilities and problems related to the
measurement of CP violation in long baseline experiments. Special attention is
paid to the issue of degeneracies and a method for their resolution is
quantitatively discussed. The CP violation reach for different experiments is
compared in dependence of and \dm{21}. Furthermore a
short comment about the possible effects of matter induced T violation is made.
Finally the limits on CPT violation obtainable at a neutrino factory are shown.Comment: Talk presented at NUFACT02, London, 1-6 July, 2002. 3 pages, 2

H-NMR Study of the Random Bond Effect in the Quantum Spin System (CH)CHNHCu(ClBr)
Spin-lattice relaxation rate of H-NMR has been measured in
(CH)CHNHCu(ClBr) with , which has been
reported to be gapped system with singlet ground state from the previous
macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements, in order to
investigate the bond randomness effect microscopically in the gapped composite
Haldane system (CH)CHNHCuCl. It was found that the spin-lattice
relaxation rate in the present system includes both fast and slow
relaxation parts indicative of the gapless magnetic ground state and the gapped
singlet ground state, respectively. We discuss the obtained results with the
previous macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements together with
the microscopic SR experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. vol.76

Formation of rarefaction waves in origami based metamaterials
We investigate the nonlinear wave dynamics of origami based metamaterials compose of Tachi Miura polyhedron (TMP) unit cells. These cells exhibit strain softening behavior under compression, which can be tuned by modifying their geometrical configurations or initial folded conditions. We assemble these TMP cells into a cluster of origami based metamaterials, and we theoretically model and numerically analyze their wave transmission mechanism under external impact. Numerical simulations show that origami based metamaterials can provide a prototypical platform for the formation of nonlinear coherent structures in the dorm of rarefaction waves, which feature a tensile wavefront upon the application of compression to the system. We also demonstrate the existence of numerically exact traveling rarefaction waves. Origami based metamaterials can be highly useful for mitigating shock waves, potentially enabling a wide variety of engineering applications
Multiscale modeling and simulation for polymer melt flows between parallel plates
The flow behaviors of polymer melt composed of short chains with ten beads
between parallel plates are simulated by using a hybrid method of molecular
dynamics and computational fluid dynamics. Three problems are solved: creep
motion under a constant shear stress and its recovery motion after removing the
stress, pressure-driven flows, and the flows in rapidly oscillating plates. In
the creep/recovery problem, the delayed elastic deformation in the creep motion
and evident elastic behavior in the recovery motion are demonstrated. The
velocity profiles of the melt in pressure-driven flows are quite different from
those of Newtonian fluid due to shear thinning. Velocity gradients of the melt
become steeper near the plates and flatter at the middle between the plates as
the pressure gradient increases and the temperature decreases. In the rapidly
oscillating plates, the viscous boundary layer of the melt is much thinner than
that of Newtonian fluid due to the shear thinning of the melt. Three different
rheological regimes, i.e., the viscous fluid, visco-elastic liquid, and
visco-elastic solid regimes, form over the oscillating plate according to the
local Deborah numbers. The melt behaves as a viscous fluid in a region for
, and the crossover between the liquid-like and
solid-like regime takes place around (where
is the angular frequency of the plate and and
are Rouse and relaxation time, respectively).Comment: 13pages, 12figure
