    Sensitivity of T2KK to the non-standard interaction in propagation

    Assuming only the non-zero electron and tau neutrino components ϵee\epsilon_{ee}, ϵeτ\epsilon_{e\tau}, ϵττ\epsilon_{\tau\tau} of the non-standard matter effect and postulating the atmospheric neutrino constraint ϵττ=ϵeτ2/(1+ϵee)\epsilon_{\tau\tau}=|\epsilon_{e\tau}|^2/(1+\epsilon_{ee}), we study the sensitivity to the non-standard interaction in neutrino propagation of the T2KK neutrino long-baseline experiment. It is shown that T2KK can constrain the parameters ϵee1|\epsilon_{ee}|\lesssim 1, ϵeτ0.2|\epsilon_{e\tau}|\lesssim 0.2. It is also shown that if ϵeτ|\epsilon_{e\tau}| and θ13\theta_{13} are large, then T2KK can determine the Dirac phase and the phase of ϵeτ\epsilon_{e\tau} separately, due to the information at the two baselines. We also provide an argument that the components ϵαμ|\epsilon_{\alpha\mu}| (α=e,μ,τ)(\alpha=e,\mu,\tau) must be small for the disappearance oscillation probability to be consistent with high-energy atmospheric neutrino data, which justifies our premise that these quantities are negligible.Comment: 29 pages, 25 figures, uses revtex4-1.     Anticardiolipin Antibodies Recognize β(2)-Glycoprotein I Structure Altered by Interacting with an Oxygen Modified Solid Phase Surface

    Anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) derived from the sera of individuals exhibiting the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) directly bind to beta(2)-glycoprotein I (beta(2)-GPI), which is adsorbed to an oxidized polystyrene surface. Oxygen atoms were introduced on a polystyrene surface by irradiation with electron or gamma-ray radiation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the irradiated surfaces were oxidized to generate C-O and C=O moieties. aCL derived from either APS patients or (NZW x BXSB)F-1 mice bound to beta(2)-GPI coated on the irradiated plates, depending on the radiation dose. Antibody binding to beta(2)-GPI on the irradiated plates was competitively inhibited by simultaneous addition of cardiolipin (CL)-coated latex beads mixed together with beta(2)-GPI but were unaffected by addition of excess beta(2)-GPI, CL micelles, or CL-coated latex beads alone. There was a high correlation between binding values of aCL in sera from 40 APS patients obtained by the anti-beta(2)-GPI enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the irradiated plates and those by the beta(2)-GPI-dependent aCL ELISA. Therefore, aCL have specificity for an epitope on beta(2)-GPI.     Systematic limits on sin^2{2theta_{13}} in neutrino oscillation experiments with multi-reactors

    Sensitivities to sin^2{2theta_{13}} without statistical errors (``systematic limit'') are investigated in neutrino oscillation experiments with multiple reactors. Using an analytical approach, we show that the systematic limit on sin^2{2theta_{13}} is dominated by the uncorrelated systematic error sigma_u of the detector. Even in an experiment with multi-detectors and multi-reactors, it turns out that most of the systematic errors including the one due to the nature of multiple sources is canceled as in the case with a single reactor plus two detectors, if the near detectors are placed suitably. The case of the KASKA plan (7 reactors and 3 detectors) is investigated in detail, and it is explicitly shown that it does not suffer from the extra uncertainty due to multiple reactors.Comment: 26 pages, 10 eps-files, revtex

    Spontaneous alloying in binary metal microclusters - A molecular dynamics study -

    Microcanonical molecular dynamics study of the spontaneous alloying(SA), which is a manifestation of fast atomic diffusion in a nano-sized metal cluster, is done in terms of a simple two dimensional binary Morse model. Important features observed by Yasuda and Mori are well reproduced in our simulation. The temperature dependence and size dependence of the SA phenomena are extensively explored by examining long time dynamics. The dominant role of negative heat of solution in completing the SA is also discussed. We point out that a presence of melting surface induces the diffusion of core atoms even if they are solid-like. In other words, the {\it surface melting} at substantially low temperature plays a key role in attaining the SA.Comment: 15 pages, 12 fgures, Submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Multi-critical point in a diluted bilayer Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet

    The S=1/2 Heisenberg bilayer antiferromagnet with randomly removed inter-layer dimers is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A zero-temperature multi-critical point (p*,g*) at the classical percolation density p=p* and inter-layer coupling g* approximately 0.16 is demonstrated. The quantum critical exponents of the percolating cluster are determined using finite-size scaling. It is argued that the associated finite-temperature quantum critical regime extends to zero inter-layer coupling and could be relevant for antiferromagnetic cuprates doped with non-magnetic impurities.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures. v2: only minor changes; accepted for publication in Phys.     Influences of time-dependent precipitation on water mass transformation, heat fluxes, and deep convection in marginal seas

The equations proposed by Spall in 2012 are extended to cases with time-dependent precipitation whose form is either a step function or a sinusoidal function. The theory predicts the differences in temperature and salinity between the convective water and the boundary current as well as the magnitudes of heat fluxes into the marginal sea and across the sea surface. Moreover, the theory reveals that there are three inherent time scales: relaxation time scales for temperature and salinity and a precipitation time scale. The relaxation time scales are determined by a steady solution of the theoretical model with steady precipitation. The relaxation time scale for temperature is always smaller than that for salinity as a result of not only the difference in the form of fluxes at the surface but also the variation in the eddy transport from the boundary current. These three time scales and the precipitation amplitude determine the strength of the ocean response to changes in precipitation and the phase relation between precipitation, changes in salinity and temperature, and changes in heat fluxes. It is demonstrated that the theoretical predictions agree qualitatively well with results from the eddy-resolving numerical model. This demonstrates the fundamental role of mesoscale eddies in the ocean response to time-dependent forcing and provides a framework with which to assess the extent to which observed variability in marginal sea convection and water mass transformation are consistent with an external forcing by variations in precipitation.This work was initiated at the 2013 WHOI Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Summer Program, which was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research.     CP, T and CPT violation in future long baseline experiments

    I give a short overview about the possibilities and problems related to the measurement of CP violation in long baseline experiments. Special attention is paid to the issue of degeneracies and a method for their resolution is quantitatively discussed. The CP violation reach for different experiments is compared in dependence of sin22θ13\sin^22\theta_{13} and \dm{21}. Furthermore a short comment about the possible effects of matter induced T violation is made.
