Experimental demonstration at 10 Gbit/s of a 2R-regenerator based on the mutual optical feedback between a laser diode and an SOA
A new regenerator concept based on the feedback between a laser diode and an SOA has been tested using an integrated version. Excellent regenerator characteristics, both static and 10Gbit/s dynamic operation, have been obtained
Electric Dipolar Susceptibility of the Anderson-Holstein Model
The temperature dependence of electric dipolar susceptibility \chi_P is
discussed on the basis of the Anderson-Holstein model with the use of a
numerical renormalization group (NRG) technique. Note that P is related with
phonon Green's function D. In order to obtain correct temperature dependence of
P at low temperatures, we propose a method to evaluate P through the Dyson
equation from charge susceptibility \chi_c calculated by the NRG, in contrast
to the direct NRG calculation of D. We find that the irreducible charge
susceptibility estimated from \chi_c agree with the perturbation calculation,
suggesting that our method works well.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Evaluation of Latex Agglutination Inhibition Reaction Test for Urinary Methamphetamine
A latex agglutination inhibition reaction test for a screening method of methamphetamine in urine has been reported by Aoki et al. An evaluation of this method was attempted by using gas chromatography and chemical ionization mass fragmentography. Some false negative and false positive cases were found. It seems that this method needs some modification for false negative cases and also it needs a confirmation test

Development of 3D Bit-Map-Based CAD and Its Application to Hydraulic Pump Model Fabrication
A novel 3D bit-map-based CAD has been developed. This program, named CellCAD,
relies on techniques which provides easy manipulation of huge sized 3D bit-map, poly-triangle
and 2D bit-map data. It can be attached to various kinds of additional plug-in processors to
extend its functions and to customize it highly for broad applications. CellCAD can be applied
in fields using computed tomography digitizers and/or layering fabricators. The authors applied
CellCAD to hydraulic pump model fabrication. This paper reports the basic design concept and
implementation techniques of CellCAD from the viewpoint of design engineering, and also
introduces the methods and results of an actual CellCAD application.Mechanical Engineerin
Effect of Anharmonicity on the Kondo Phenomena of a Magnetic Ion Vibrating in a Confinement Potential
Effect of anharmonicity of a cage potential for a magnetic ion vibrating in a
metal is investigated by the numerical renormalization group method. The cage
potential is assumed to be one-dimensional and of the double-well type. In the
absence of the Coulomb interaction, we find continuous crossover among the
three limiting cases: Yu-Anderson-type Kondo regime, the double-well-type Kondo
one, and the renormalized Fermi chain one. In the entire parameter space of the
double-well potential, the ground state is described by a local Fermi liquid.
In the Yu-Anderson-type Kondo regime, a quantum phase transition to the ground
state with odd parity takes place passing through the two-channel Kondo fixed
point when the Coulomb interaction increases. Therefore, the vibration of a
magnetic ion in an oversized cage structure is a promising route to the
two-channel Kondo effect.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for JPS
A Case of Death After Glue Sniffing
A 25-year-old male, a thinner and/or glue sniffer, was found dead in the bathtub of his house approximately 24 hr after abusing a glue. As the cause of death was unknown, an autopsy of the deceased was performed. The ingredients of the glue in the tissue and organs were analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatographymass spectrometry. Toluene, n-hexane and methylcyclopentane in the mesenterial fat were confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the toluene concentration analyzed by gas chromatography was 10.9 μ,gig in the blood and 50.0 μ,gig in the brain. The cause of death was considered to be suffocation or acute cardiac failure under the effect of toluene
IgA-enhancing effects of membrane vesicles derived from Lactobacillus sakei subsp. sakei NBRC15893
Immunoglobulin (Ig) A in the mucus of the intestinal tract plays an important role in preventing the invasion of pathogenic microorganisms and regulating the composition of the gut microbiota. Several strains of probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are known to promote intestinal IgA production. Bacteria are also known to naturally release spherical membrane vesicles (MVs) that are involved in various biological functions such as quorum sensing, pathogenesis, and host immunomodulation. However, the production of MVs by LAB and their effects on host immunity remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the MV production by Lactobacillus sakei subsp. sakei NBRC15893 isolated from kimoto, the traditional seed mash used for brewing sake. MVs were separated from the culture broth of L. sakei NBRC15893 through filtration and density gradient ultracentrifugation and were observed by transmission electron microscopy. The MVs showed a spherical morphology, with a diameter of 30–400 nm, and contained proteins and nucleic acids. In addition, both the LAB cells and purified MVs promoted IgA production by murine Peyer’s patch cells. This MV- and cell-induced IgA production was suppressed by neutralization of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2, which recognizes cell wall components of gram-positive bacteria, using an anti-TLR2 antibody. Collectively, our results indicate that MVs released from L. sakei NBRC15893 enhance IgA production by activating host TLR2 signaling through its cell wall components. Thus, it is important to consider novel interactions between gut microbiota and hosts via MVs, and MVs derived from probiotic bacteria could have promising applications as safe adjuvants.Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) KAKENHI grant (Nos. 16K18302 and 18K04857 [to S.Y.Y]; 15H05790, 16H01373, 17H04134, and 26293111 [to J.K.]
