Enhanced Gas-Flow-Induced Voltage in Graphene
We show by systemically experimental investigation that gas-flow-induced
voltage in monolayer graphene is more than twenty times of that in bulk
graphite. Examination over samples with sheet resistances ranging from 307 to
1600 {\Omega}/sq shows that the induced voltage increase with the resistance
and can be further improved by controlling the quality and doping level of
graphene. The induced voltage is nearly independent of the substrate materials
and can be well explained by the interplay of Bernoulli's principle and the
carrier density dependent Seebeck coefficient. The results demonstrate that
graphene has great potential for flow sensors and energy conversion devices
In vivo99mTc-HYNIC-annexin V imaging of early tumor apoptosis in mice after single dose irradiation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Apoptosis is a major mode of hematological tumor death after radiation. Early detection of apoptosis may be beneficial for cancer adaptive treatment. 99mTc-HYNIC-annexinV has been reported as a promising agent for in vivo apoptosis imaging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of in vivo99mTc-HYNIC-annexinV imaging of radiation- induced apoptosis, and to investigate its correlation with radiosensitivity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Ten days after inoculation of tumor cells in the right upper limbs, the mice were randomly divided into two groups. The imaging group (4 mice each level, 4 dose levels) was injected with 4-8 MBq 99mTc-HYNIC-annexinV 24 hours after irradiation and imaged 1 hr post-injection, and the mice were sacrificed immediately after imaging for biodistribution analysis of annexin V. The observation group (4 mice each level, 2 dose levels) was only observed for tumor regression post-radiation. The number of apoptotic cells in a tumor was estimated with TUNEL assay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 99mTc-HYNIC-annexin V uptake in E14 lymphoma significantly increased as the radiation dose escalated from 0 to 8 Gy, and significantly correlated with the number of TUNEL-positive cells (r = 0.892, P < 0.001). The Annexin-V uptake and the number of TUNEL-positive cells in El4 lymphoma were significantly greater than those in S180 sarcoma. With 8 Gy, S180 sarcoma tumor showed scanty apoptosis and less shrinkage while El4 lymphoma showed remarkable apoptosis and complete remission.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>99mTc-HYNIC-annexinV in vivo imaging is a feasible method to detect early radiation-induced apoptosis in different tumors, and might be predictive for radiation sensitivity.</p
Thermal Emission from the Hot Jupiter WASP-103b in and Bands
Hot Jupiters, particularly those with temperature higher than 2000\,K are the
best sample of planets that allow in-depth characterization of their
atmospheres. We present here a thermal emission study of the ultra hot Jupiter
WASP\mbox{-}103\,b observed in two secondary eclipses with CFHT/WIRCam in
and bands. By means of high precision differential photometry, we
determine eclipse depths in and to an accuracy of 220 and
270\,ppm, which are combined with the published HST/WFC3 and Spitzer data to
retrieve a joint constraints on the properties of WASP-103\,b dayside
atmosphere. We find that the atmosphere is best fit with a thermal inversion
layer included. The equilibrium chemistry retrieval indicates an enhanced C/O
(1.35) and a super metallicity with
[Fe/H] composition. Given the near-solar metallicity of
WASP-103 of [Fe/H]=0.06, this planet seems to be 100 more abundant than
its host star. The free chemistry retrieval analysis yields a large abundance
of FeH, H, CO and CH. Additional data of better accuracy from
future observations of JWST should provide better constraint of the atmospheric
properties of WASP-103b

A Glimpse of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome from Comparative Genomics of S. suis 2 Chinese Isolates
BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is an important zoonotic pathogen, causing more than 200 cases of severe human infection worldwide, with the hallmarks of meningitis, septicemia, arthritis, etc. Very recently, SS2 has been recognized as an etiological agent for streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), which was originally associated with Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) in Streptococci. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying STSS are poorly understood. METHODS AND FINDINGS: To elucidate the genetic determinants of STSS caused by SS2, whole genome sequencing of 3 different Chinese SS2 strains was undertaken. Comparative genomics accompanied by several lines of experiments, including experimental animal infection, PCR assay, and expression analysis, were utilized to further dissect a candidate pathogenicity island (PAI). Here we show, for the first time, a novel molecular insight into Chinese isolates of highly invasive SS2, which caused two large-scale human STSS outbreaks in China. A candidate PAI of âŒ89 kb in length, which is designated 89K and specific for Chinese SS2 virulent isolates, was investigated at the genomic level. It shares the universal properties of PAIs such as distinct GC content, consistent with its pivotal role in STSS and high virulence. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first PAI candidate from S. suis worldwide. Our finding thus sheds light on STSS triggered by SS2 at the genomic level, facilitates further understanding of its pathogenesis and points to directions of development on some effective strategies to combat highly pathogenic SS2 infections
