One-Drop Self-Assembly of Ultra-Fine Second-Order Organic Nonlinear Optical Crystal Nanowires
In this study, we propose a one-drop self-assembly method, which proved capable of successfully preparing 4-N, N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) single-crystalline nanowires (NWs). The apparent roughness of the DAST NWs was determined to be less than 100 pm by using a high-resolution atomic force microscope, indicating their ultrafine quality. The DAST NWs also exhibited excellent nonlinear optical properties, including two-photon excited fluorescence and second harmonic generation, which could enable the production of low-cost, low-power-consumption wideband wavelength conversion devices. Thus, the described method may provide a new avenue for organic NW fabrication
Association Between Polymorphisms in Estrogen Receptor Genes and Depression in Women: A Meta-Analysis
Objective: It is suggested that estrogen receptors (ERs) might be associated with the disproportionate vulnerability of women to depressive episodes. Several variants in ER-alpha (ERα) and ER-beta (ERβ) have been linked to depression, but the results were not consistent. Hence, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between ERα/ERβ and depression in a cohort of women. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed in public databases. The genetic association between polymorphisms in Erα/ERβ and depression risk in a cohort of women was evaluated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Cochran’s Q test and the I2 index were used to evaluate heterogeneity. Results: In total, 10 studies and 4 SNPs (rs2234693, rs9340799, rs4986938, rs1256049) were included in our meta-analysis. rs2234693 genotype was significantly associated with the risk of depression in women by dominant model (CC + CT vs TT, OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.09–1.55, p = 0.0031), recessive model (CC vs CT + TT, OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.00–2.67, p = 0.0478), additive model (CC vs TT, OR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.12–3.35, p = 0.0189) and allelic model (C vs T, OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.10–1.39, p = 0.0003). For rs9340799, the frequencies of risk genotypes according to the dominant (GG + GA vs AA, OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.10–1.98, p = 0.0096, I2 = 0%, p = 0.43) and allelic (G vs A, OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.04–1.69, p = 0.0236, I2 = 0%, p = 0.39) models were significantly lower in women with depression than in controls within the Asian subgroup. For rs1256049, risk genotypes were significantly more frequent in depressed subjects than in controls under the dominant model (AA+ GA vs GG, OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.19–2.21, p = 0.0024) and the allelic model (A vs G, OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.07–1.72, p = 0.012) after sensitivity analysis by omitting one study which induce the heterogeneity. Conclusions: The current meta-analysis is the first and most comprehensive investigation of the association between ERs and depression in women, and the findings support the concept that ERs participate in the etiology of sex heterogeneity in depression
Long noncoding RNA AFAP1-AS1 acts as a competing endogenous RNA of miR-423-5p to facilitate nasopharyngeal carcinoma metastasis through regulating the Rho/Rac pathway
Background: Actin filament-associated protein 1 antisense RNA 1 (AFAP1-AS1), a long noncoding RNA, is significantly highly expressed and associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in many cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this study, we aim to identify the role of AFAP1-AS1 acting as an oncogenic lncRNA to promote NPC metastasis.
Methods: The role of AFAP1-AS1, miR-423-5p, and FOSL2 in NPC metastasis was investigated in vitro and in vivo. Bioinformatics analysis and luciferase activity assays were used to identify the interaction between AFAP1-AS1, miR-423- 5p, and FOSL2. Additionally, real-time PCR and western blotting were used to assess the function of AFAP1-AS1 acting as an oncogenic lncRNA to promote NPC progression by regulating miR-423-5p and the downstream Rho/Rac pathway.
Results: In this study, we determined that AFAP1-AS1 functions as a competing endogenous RNA in NPC to regulate the Rho/Rac pathway through miR-423-5p. These interactions can mediate the expression of RAB11B, LASP1, and FOSL2 and accelerate cell migration and invasion via the Rho/Rac signaling pathway or FOSL2. AFAP1-AS1 and FOSL2 could competitively bind with miR-423-5p to regulate several molecules, including RAB11B and LASP1 of the Rho/Rac signaling pathway. AFAP1-AS1 can also regulate the expression of LASP1, which was transcriptionally regulated by FOSL2, resulting in increased migration and invasion of NPC cells via the Rho/Rac signaling pathway.
Conclusions: The observations in this study identify an important role for AFAP1-AS1 as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) in NPC pathogenesis and indicate that it may serve as a potential target for cancer diagnosis and treatment
Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of acetaminophen from wastewater using WO3/TiO2/SiO2 composite under UV–VIS irradiation
peer-reviewedThe full text of this article will not be available in ULIR until the embargo expires on the 26/8/2019This study investigates the photocatalytic degradation of acetaminophen (Ace) from synthetic
wastewater by individual TiO2, TiO2/SiO2 and/or WO3/TiO2/SiO2 composite under UV-VIS
illumination. To characterize changes in their morphology and crystal structures before and after
treatment, Χ-ray diffraction (ΧRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) , DRS
UV-VIS absorption spectra, Brunaer-Emmer-Teller (BET) and scanning electron microscopy
(SEM) techniques were used. The effects of varying loading ratios of the WO3 on the TiO2/SiO2
composite for Ace degradation were studied. Operating parameters such as initial concentration,
reaction time, dose of photocatalyst and pH were tested. Degradation by-products were also
presented. It is found that the photodegradation performance of the WO3/TiO2/SiO2 composite as
a photocatalyst in this study could be enhanced by optimizing the loading ratio of the WO3.
About 3% (w/w) of WO3/TiO2/SiO2 was found to improve the degradation of Ace from 33% to
95% at the same initial concentration of 5 mg/L. The resulting oxidation by-products included
hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone. Under the same conditions, the result of photocatalytic
degradation by the 3% (w/w) of WO3/TiO2/SiO2 composite was significantly higher (95%) than
that by the individual TiO2/SiO2 (42%) and/or by the TiO2 alone (33%). Under optimized
conditions (1.5 g/L; 3% (w/w) of WO3/TiO2/SiO2 composite; pH 9; 4 h of reaction time), 95% of
Ace removal with an initial concentration of 5 mg/L could be attained. However, the treated
effluents still could not meet the discharge standard of less than 0.2 mg/L set by China’s and US
legislation. This indicates that further subsequent treatment like biological processes is still
necessary for completing the removal of target pollutant from the wastewater samples
The role of tripartite motif-containing 28 in cancer progression and its therapeutic potentials
Tripartite motif-containing 28 (TRIM28) belongs to tripartite motif (TRIM) family. TRIM28 not only binds and degrades its downstream target, but also acts as a transcription co-factor to inhibit gene expression. More and more studies have shown that TRIM28 plays a vital role in tumor genesis and progression. Here, we reviewed the role of TRIM28 in tumor proliferation, migration, invasion and cell death. Moreover, we also summarized the important role of TRIM28 in tumor stemness sustainability and immune regulation. Because of the importance of TRIM28 in tumors, TIRM28 may be a candidate target for anti-tumor therapy and play an important role in tumor diagnosis and treatment in the future
Neutron Spectroscopy Evidence for a Possible Magnetic-Field-Induced Gapless Quantum-Spin-Liquid Phase in a Kitaev Material α-RuCl3
As one of the most promising Kitaev quantum-spin-liquid (QSL) candidates, α-RuCl3 has received a great deal of attention. However, its ground state exhibits a long-range zigzag magnetic order, which defies the QSL phase. Nevertheless, the magnetic order is fragile and can be completely suppressed by applying an external magnetic field. Here, we explore the evolution of magnetic excitations of α-RuCl3 under an in-plane magnetic field, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals. Under zero field, there exist spin-wave excitations near the M point and a continuum near the Γ point, which are believed to be associated with the zigzag magnetic order and fractional excitations of the Kitaev QSL state, respectively. By increasing the magnetic field, the spin-wave excitations gradually give way to the continuous excitations. On the verge of the critical field μ0Hc = 7.5 T, the former ones vanish and only the latter ones are left, indicating the emergence of a pure QSL state. By further increasing the field strength, the excitations near the Γ point become more intense. By following the gap evolution of the excitations near the Γ point, we are able to establish a phase diagram composed of three interesting phases, including a gapped zigzag order phase at low fields, possibly gapless QSL phase near μ0Hc, and gapped partially polarized phase at high fields. These results demonstrate that an in-plane magnetic field can drive α-RuCl3 into a long-sought QSL state near the critical field
