Comfort-Centered Design of a Lightweight and Backdrivable Knee Exoskeleton
This paper presents design principles for comfort-centered wearable robots
and their application in a lightweight and backdrivable knee exoskeleton. The
mitigation of discomfort is treated as mechanical design and control issues and
three solutions are proposed in this paper: 1) a new wearable structure
optimizes the strap attachment configuration and suit layout to ameliorate
excessive shear forces of conventional wearable structure design; 2) rolling
knee joint and double-hinge mechanisms reduce the misalignment in the sagittal
and frontal plane, without increasing the mechanical complexity and inertia,
respectively; 3) a low impedance mechanical transmission reduces the reflected
inertia and damping of the actuator to human, thus the exoskeleton is
highly-backdrivable. Kinematic simulations demonstrate that misalignment
between the robot joint and knee joint can be reduced by 74% at maximum knee
flexion. In experiments, the exoskeleton in the unpowered mode exhibits 1.03 Nm
root mean square (RMS) low resistive torque. The torque control experiments
demonstrate 0.31 Nm RMS torque tracking error in three human subjects.Comment: 8 pages, 16figures, Journa
Crystal structure of human nuclear pore complex component NUP43
AbstractNuclear pore complexes (NPC) form nuclear pores that cross the nuclear envelope and allow molecules to transport between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. We solved the crystal structure of human Nup43 (hNUP43), an important component in the Nup107 subcomplex of NPC. hNup43 adopts a seven-bladed β-propeller fold. We confirmed by ITC that neither human Nup37 (hNup37) nor human Nup133 (hNup133) interacts with hNup43. We demonstrated by analytical gel filtration that the human Nup85-Seh1L binary complex recruits hNup43 to form a ternary complex. Based on amino acid sequence analysis, we predicted the hNup85-hSeh1L binding surface of hNup43
Estimation of shear stress by using a myocardial bridge-mural coronary artery simulating device
Background: This study was aimed at developing a myocardial bridge-mural coronary artery simulative device and analyzing the relationship between shear stress on the mural coronary artery and atherosclerosis.
Methods: A myocardial bridge-mural coronary artery simulative device was used to simulate experiments in vitro. In the condition of maintaining any related parameters such as system temperature, average flow rate, and heart rate, we calculated and observed changes in proximal and distal mean values, and oscillatory value of shear stress on the mural coronary artery by regulating the compression level of the myocardial bridge to the mural coronary artery.
Results: Under 0% compression, no significant differences were observed in distal and proximal mean values and oscillatory value of the shear stress on the mural coronary artery. With the increase in the degree of compression, the mean shear stress at the distal end was greater than that at the proximal end, but the oscillatory value of the shear stress at the proximal end was greater than that at the distal end.
Conclusions: The experimental results of this study indicate that myocardial bridge compression leads to abnormal hemodynamics at the proximal end of the mural coronary artery. This abnormal phenomenon is of great significance in the study of atherosclerosis hemodynamic pathogenesis, which has potential clinical value for pathological effects and treatments of myocardial bridg
Contact dermatitis caused by prevention measures during the COVID-19 pandemic: a narrative review
IntroductionDuring the outbreak of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), health care workers wore personal protective equipment including masks, gloves and goggles for a long time. In order to reduce the transmission routes of the virus, public places were sprayed with disinfectant. Moreover, the body, hands and clothing were frequently disinfected and washed for hygiene purposes. Studies have shown that these practices could easily irritate the skin and damage the skin barrier. Long-term irritation or exposure to allergens may lead to the occurrence of contact dermatitis (CD).MethodsSubject headings were searched via the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and web of science databases: COVID-19; contact dermatitis; adverse skin reaction; PPE; dermatitis; mask; glory; hand hygiene, disinfection; face shield; goggle; protect cloth. A total of 246 and 646 articles were retrieved from the two databases, respectively. 402 articles remained after removing duplicates. Reviews, non-English articles, articles that could not be accessed to read or did not conform to our topic were excluded. Finally, a total of 32 cross-sectional studies, 9 case reports and 2 randomized controlled trials were included.DiscussionThis article reviews reports of CD caused by various prevention and hygiene measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. The amount of skin damage caused by COVID-19 prevention measures could be decreased by improved education about skin management
Quantification of MRI and MRS characteristics changes in a rat model at different stage of cerebral ischemia
BACKGROUND:
A better understanding the mechanisms of cerebral ischemia is important both for diagnosis and treatment.
OBJECTIVE:
The study aimed to quantify several characteristics of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to indicate the brain tissue changes at different stage of cerebral ischemia in rats.
METHODS:
In the present study, a rat model of cerebral ischemia was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in the left hemisphere. MRI and MRS were performed on 15 Sprague Dawley rats 4 H, 24 H, and 1Â W after MCAO. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), relative ADC including FNR, PNR, PNF, and metabolite ratio NCC were proposed to reflect the changes of water diffusion and metabolism in brain tissue.
RESULTS:
ADCs of focal zone and penumbra zone from 1 W group were significantly larger than those from 4H group, respectively (both p < 0.05). PNR and PNF of 24H and 1 W groups were significantly less than 4H group (all p < 0.01). NCCs of focal zone and penumbra zone were significantly less than the normal zone within 4H, 24H, and 1 W groups, respectively (both p < 0.01). While NCCs of penumbra zone from 24H and 1 W groups were significantly larger than 4H group (both p < 0.01).
CONCLUSION:
We conclude that combination of MRI and MRS characteristics can provide significant indicators for ischemic damage at different stage of cerebral ischemia in a rat model
Influential factors on urine EV DNA methylation detection and its diagnostic potential in prostate cancer
The value of Extracellular vesicles (EVs) diagnostic markers is widely recognized. However, current research on EV DNA remains limited. This study investigates the biological properties, preprocessing factors, and diagnostic potential of EV DNA. We found that DNA positive vesicles account for 23.3% ± 6.7% of the urine total EV, with a large amount of DNA attached to the outside. EV DNA fragments are large, there is no significant effect on uEV DNA when store urine less than 6 h at 4°C. In addition, the influence of different EV extraction methods on methylation detection is also minor. More importantly, RASSF1A methylation in urine total EV DNA can distinguish between PCa and BPH, with an AUC of 0.874. Our results suggest the potential of urine EV DNA as a novel marker for PCa diagnosis. This provides a new idea for the study of urinary tumor markers
