Deposition of Ti/TiC Composite Coatings on Implant Structures Using Laser Engineered Net Shaping
A new method of depositing hard and wear resistant composite coatings on metal-onmetal bearing surfaces of titanium implant structures is proposed and demonstrated. The method
consists of depositing a Ti/TiC composite coating (~ 2.5 mm thick) on titanium implant bearing
surfaces using Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENSÂź). Defect-free composite coatings were
successfully produced at various amounts of the reinforcing TiC phase with excellent interfacial
characteristics using a mixture of commercially pure Ti and TiC powders. The coatings consisted
of a mixture of coarser unmelted/partially melted (UMC) TiC particles and finer, discreet
resolidified (RSC) TiC particles uniformly distributed in the titanium matrix. The amounts of
UMC and RSC were found to increase with increasing TiC content of the original powder
mixture. The coatings exhibited a high level of hardness, which increased with increasing TiC
content of the original powder mixture. Fractographic studies indicated that the coatings, even at
60 vol.% TiC, do not fail in a brittle manner. Various aspects of LENSÂź deposition of Ti/TiC
composite coatings are addressed and a preliminary understanding of structure-property-fracture
correlations is presented. The current work shows that the proposed approach to deposit
composite coatings using laser-based metal deposition processes is highly-effective, which can
be readily utilized on a commercial basis for manufacture of high-performance implants.Mechanical Engineerin
Strongly Universal Reversible Gate Sets
It is well-known that the Toffoli gate and the negation gate together yield a
universal gate set, in the sense that every permutation of can be
implemented as a composition of these gates. Since every bit operation that
does not use all of the bits performs an even permutation, we need to use at
least one auxiliary bit to perform every permutation, and it is known that one
bit is indeed enough. Without auxiliary bits, all even permutations can be
implemented. We generalize these results to non-binary logic: If is a
finite set of odd cardinality then a finite gate set can generate all
permutations of for all , without any auxiliary symbols. If the
cardinality of is even then, by the same argument as above, only even
permutations of can be implemented for large , and we show that indeed
all even permutations can be obtained from a finite universal gate set. We also
consider the conservative case, that is, those permutations of that
preserve the weight of the input word. The weight is the vector that records
how many times each symbol occurs in the word. It turns out that no finite
conservative gate set can, for all , implement all conservative even
permutations of without auxiliary bits. But we provide a finite gate set
that can implement all those conservative permutations that are even within
each weight class of .Comment: Submitted to Rev Comp 201
Fast quantum information transfer with superconducting flux qubits coupled to a cavity
We present a way to realize quantum information transfer with superconducting
flux qubits coupled to a cavity. Because only resonant qubit-cavity interaction
and resonant qubit-pulse interaction are applied, the information transfer can
be performed much faster, when compared with the previous proposals. This
proposal does not require adjustment of the qubit level spacings during the
operation. Moreover, neither uniformity in the device parameters nor exact
placement of qubits in the cavity is needed by this proposal.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
The Fermi Bubbles: Gamma-ray, Microwave, and Polarization Signatures of Leptonic AGN Jets
The origin of the Fermi bubbles and the microwave haze is yet to be
determined. To disentangle different models requires detailed comparisons
between theoretical predictions and multi-wavelength observations. Our previous
simulations have demonstrated that the primary features of the Fermi bubbles
could be successfully reproduced by recent jet activity from the central active
galactic nucleus (AGN). In this work, we generate gamma-ray and microwave maps
and spectra based on the simulated properties of cosmic rays (CRs) and magnetic
fields in order to examine whether the observed bubble and haze emission could
be explained by leptons contained in the AGN jets. We also investigate the
model predictions of the polarization properties of the Fermi bubbles. We find
that: (1) The same population of leptons can simultaneously explain the bubble
and haze emission given that the magnetic fields within the bubbles are very
close to the exponentially distributed ambient field, which can be explained by
mixing in of the ambient field followed by turbulent field amplification; (2)
The centrally peaked microwave profile suggests CR replenishment, which is
consistent with the presence of a more recent second jet event; (3) The bubble
interior exhibits a high degree of polarization because of ordered radial
magnetic field lines stretched by elongated vortices behind the shocks;
highly-polarized signals could also be observed inside the draping layer; (4)
Enhancement of rotation measures could exist within the shock-compressed layer
because of increased gas density and more amplified and ordered magnetic
fields. We discuss the possibility that the deficient haze emission at b<-35
degrees is due to the suppression of magnetic fields, which is consistent with
the existence of lower-energy CRs causing the polarized emission at 2.3 GHz.
Possible AGN jet composition in the leptonic scenario is also discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, matched with MNRAS published versio
Existence of Multistring Solutions of the Self-Gravitating Massive Boson
We consider a semilinear elliptic system which include the model system of
the strings in the cosmology as a special case. We prove existence of
multi-string solutions and obtain precise asymptotic decay estimates near
infinity for the solutions.
As a special case of this result we solve an open problem posed in

Process Parameters Optimization for Ultrasonically Consolidated Fiber-Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites
As an emerging rapid prototyping technology, Ultrasonic Consolidation (UC) has
been used to successfully fabricate metal matrix composites (MMC). The intent of this
study is to identify the optimum combination of processing parameters, including
oscillation amplitude, welding speed, normal force, operating temperature and fiber
orientation, for manufacture of long fiber-reinforced MMCs. The experiments were
designed using the Taguchi method, and an L25 orthogonal array was utilized to
determine the influences of each parameter. SiC fibers of 0.1mm diameter were
successfully embedded into an Al 3003 metal matrix. Two methods were employed to
characterize the bonding between the fiber and matrix material: optical/electron
microscopy and push-out tests monitored by an acoustic emission (AE) sensor. SEM
images and data from push-out tests were analyzed and optimum combinations of
parameters were achieved.Mechanical Engineerin
Migration on request, a practical technique for preservation
Maintaining a digital object in a usable state over time is a crucial aspect of digital preservation. Existing methods of preserving have many drawbacks. This paper describes advanced techniques of data migration which can be used to support preservation more accurately and cost effectively.
To ensure that preserved works can be rendered on current computer systems over time, âtraditional migrationâ has been used to convert data into current formats. As the new format becomes obsolete another conversion is performed, etcetera. Traditional migration has many inherent problems as errors during transformation propagate throughout future transformations.
CAMiLEONâs software longevity principles can be applied to a migration strategy, offering improvements over traditional migration. This new approach is named âMigration on Request.â Migration on Request shifts the burden of preservation onto a single tool, which is maintained over time. Always returning to the original format enables potential errors to be significantly reduced
Micromachined membrane particle filters
We report here several particle membrane filters (8 x 8 mm^2) with circular, hexagonal and rectangular through holes. By varying hole dimensions from 6 to 12 pm, opening factors from 4 to 45 % are achieved. In order to improve the filter robustness, a composite silicon nitride/Parylene membrane technology is developed. More importantly, fluid dynamic performance of the filters is also studied by both experiments and numerical simulations. It is found that the gaseous flow through the filters depends strongly on opening factors, and the measured pressure drops are much lower than that from numerical simulation using the Navier-Stokes equation. Interestingly, surface velocity slip can only account for a minor part of the discrepancy. This suggests that a very interesting topic for micro fluid mechanics research is identified
