Enhanced electroweak penguin amplitude in B-->VV decays
We discuss a novel electromagnetic penguin contribution to the transverse
helicity amplitudes in B decays to two vector mesons, which is enhanced by two
powers of mB/Lambda relative to the standard penguin amplitudes. This leads to
unique polarization signatures in penguin-dominated decay modes such as B-->rho
K* similar to polarization effects in the radiative decay B-->K*gamma, and
offers new opportunities to probe the magnitude and chirality of
flavour-changing neutral current couplings to photons.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Seamless soft handover in DVB-H networks
DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds) is a standard specified by the DVB Organization specifically for the broadcast of TV-like content and data to handheld devices, such as mobile phones, which have unique requirements in terms of power consumption, screen-size and mobility. Seamless handover in such a unidirectional network is especially challenging. In this paper we describe the handover issues of DVB-H networks and propose a novel seamless soft handover mechanism based on measuring CDF (Cumulative Distribution Function) of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) in the DVB-H terminal receiver front-end . Details of the algorithm is given and simulation is done to prove the benefits of such soft handover scheme
Three-dimensional time-marching aeroelastic analyses using an unstructured-grid Euler method
Modifications to a three dimensional, implicit, upwind, unstructured-grid Euler code for aeroelastic analysis of complete aircraft configurations are described. The modifications involve the addition of the structural equations of motion for their simultaneous time integration with the governing flow equations. The paper presents a detailed description of the time marching aeroelastic procedure and presents comparisons with experimental data to provide an assessment of the capability. Flutter results are shown for an isolated 45 degree swept-back wing and a supersonic transport configuration with a fuselage, clipped delta wing, and two identical rearward-mounted nacelles. Comparisons between computed and experimental flutter characteristics show good agreement, giving confidence in the accuracy of the aeroelastic capability that was developed
Performance analysis of time slicing in DVB-H
TV is the biggest media and the last one missing from mobile phones. Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds (DVB-H) is the latest development from the DVB Project targeting handheld, battery powered devices such as mobile telephones, PDAs(Personal Digital Assistants), etc. Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) is the technology that is usually used in computer and telecommunication systems. Time slicing is one of the characteristics that makes it possible to broadcast high resolution TV programes and fast IP data services to battery powered handheld terminals. This paper discusses the characteristics and advantages of Time slicing algorithm in DVB-H and presents the performance analysis of time slicing in DVB-H through both theoretical analysis and software simulation
350 Micron Observations of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies at Intermediate Redshifts
We present 350micron observations of 36 ultraluminous infrared galaxies
(ULIRGs) at intermediate redshifts (0.089 <= z <= 0.926) using the
Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera II (SHARC-II) on the Caltech
Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). In total, 28 sources are detected at S/N >= 3,
providing the first flux measurements longward of 100micron for a statistically
significant sample of ULIRGs in the redshift range of 0.1 < z < 1.0. Combining
our 350micron flux measurements with the existing IRAS 60 and 100micron data,
we fit a single-temperature model to the spectral energy distribution (SED),
and thereby estimate dust temperatures and far-IR luminosities. Assuming an
emissivity index of beta = 1.5, we find a median dust temperature and far-IR
luminosity of Td = 42.8+-7.1K and log(Lfir/Lsolar) = 12.2+-0.5, respectively.
The far-IR/radio correlation observed in local star-forming galaxies is found
to hold for ULIRGs in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.5, suggesting that the
dust in these sources is predominantly heated by starbursts. We compare the
far-IR luminosities and dust temperatures derived for dusty galaxy samples at
low and high redshifts with our sample of ULIRGs at intermediate redshift. A
general Lfir-Td relation is observed, albeit with significant scatter, due to
differing selection effects and variations in dust mass and grain properties.
The relatively high dust temperatures observed for our sample compared to that
of high-z submillimeter-selected starbursts with similar far-IR luminosities
suggest that the dominant star formation in ULIRGs at moderate redshifts takes
place on smaller spatial scales than at higher redshifts.Comment: (24 pages in preprint format, 1 table, 7 figures, accepted for

Incorporating Digital Repeaters into the Soft Handover Standard in Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld
Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds (DVB-H) is a standard for broadcasting IP data services to portable devices. Handover in unidirectional broadcast networks is a novel issue introduced by this technology. This paper proposes and analyses the Repeater Aided Soft Handover (RA_handover) algorithm for a DVB-H receiver with MIMO antennas and presents the benefits of implementing RA_handover compared with a handover process without repeaters. For network planning and optimisation purposes simulation models are developed to analyse the RA_handover approach. It is shown that RA_handover could greatly improve the quality of service and consume much less front-end battery power than a handover method without repeaters. In addition, the cost introduced by the algorithm is briefly estimated. In conclusion, curves are given that show the relationship between quality of service and consumed battery power, which provide further support for including RA_handover in the DVB-H soft handover standard. The paper provides valuable outcomes for service providers and standard policy makers
Quantum Hall Effect on the Hofstadter Butterfly
Motivated by recent experimental attempts to detect the Hofstadter butterfly,
we numerically calculate the Hall conductivity in a modulated two-dimensional
electron system with disorder in the quantum Hall regime. We identify the
critical energies where the states are extended for each of butterfly subbands,
and obtain the trajectory as a function of the disorder. Remarkably, we find
that when the modulation becomes anisotropic, the critical energy branches
accompanying a change of the Hall conductivity.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
