The Approach for Estimating Cost Growth Rates in the Taiwanese Banking Industry

    No full text
The most present articles adopted the output-oriented Malmquist productivity index (OM) for estimating the production efficiency and productivity of Bank. Based on the method of Yang and Lee (2009), the research provides the new way to discuss cost efficiency and cost growth rate of Taiwanese banking industry during 1995 to 2005. The cost growth rate was decomposed into five components: technical efficiency change, allocation efficiency change, technical structure change, input price change and output scale change. Empirical results indicate 7.87% cost growth rates decline in the banking industry. Then we apply the random-effects Tobit panel data regression analysis to investigate the determinant effects in terms of the cost efficiency and cost growth rates for these banks. The results show that the average scale of these banks is larger than optimal scale. It means that the increase of banks' scale has positive relationship to cost efficiency and allocation efficiency. The index of cost efficiency is significantly improved by the decrease of Non-Performing Loan. At least, system generalized method of moment dynamic panel model results indicate that the cost growth rate of Taiwanese banks exhibits significant positive persistence.banking sector, data envelopment analysis, malmquist index, cost growth rate

Decomposition of the cost growth for the US forest product industries

    No full text
This article investigates sources that lead to the cost growth of eight U.S. forest products industries during the period 1997 to 2005. The cost growth rate decomposes into two components: the cost efficiency change and the cost technical change. Empirical evidences indicate that the cost growth in wood product industries is predominantly from cost technical change. In contrast, cost inefficiency primarily drives the cost growth in the pulp and paper industries.

IMPACTS OF THE ECONOMIC COOPERATION FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT ON BANKING COST EFFICIENCY IN CHINA AND TAIWAN : A STOCHASTIC METAFRONTIER APPROACH

This study extends the stochastic metafrontier model (SMF) of Huang, Huang and Liu (2014) to compare the meta-cost banking efficiency in China and Taiwan from 2007 to 2013, and to analyze the impacts on cost efficiency following the implementation of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).The empirical tests show that the banking sectors in both China and Taiwan implemented distinct technology-related policies during this period. Following the implementation of ECFA, the meta-cost efficiency for Taiwanʼs banking sectors showed a distinct improvement. Besides, the Chinese banks which had established branches in Taiwan experienced a significant enhancement in meta-cost efficiency. Several managerial insights and implications are discussed

Screening for Mutations in the TBX1 Gene on Chromosome 22q11.2 in Schizophrenia

A higher-than-expected frequency of schizophrenia in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome suggests that chromosome 22q11.2 harbors the responsive genes related to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The TBX1 gene, which maps to the region on chromosome 22q11.2, plays a vital role in neuronal functions. Haploinsufficiency of the TBX1 gene is associated with schizophrenia endophenotype. This study aimed to investigate whether the TBX1 gene is associated with schizophrenia. We searched for mutations in the TBX1 gene in 652 patients with schizophrenia and 567 control subjects using a re-sequencing method and conducted a reporter gene assay. We identified six SNPs and 25 rare mutations with no association with schizophrenia from Taiwan. Notably, we identified two rare schizophrenia-specific mutations (c.-123G>C and c.-11delC) located at 5′ UTR of the TBX1 gene. The reporter gene assay showed that c.-123C significantly decreased promoter activity, while c.-11delC increased promoter activity compared with the wild-type. Our findings suggest that the TBX1 gene is unlikely a major susceptible gene for schizophrenia in an ethnic Chinese population for Taiwan, but a few rare mutations in the TBX1 gene may contribute to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia in some patients
