Increasing Compression Ratio of Low Complexity Compressive Sensing Video Encoder with Application-Aware Configurable Mechanism

With the development of embedded video acquisition nodes and wireless video surveillance systems, traditional video coding methods could not meet the needs of less computing complexity any more, as well as the urgent power consumption. So, a low-complexity compressive sensing video encoder framework with application-aware configurable mechanism is proposed in this paper, where novel encoding methods are exploited based on the practical purposes of the real applications to reduce the coding complexity effectively and improve the compression ratio (CR). Moreover, the group of processing (GOP) size and the measurement matrix size can be configured on the encoder side according to the post-analysis requirements of an application example of object tracking to increase the CR of encoder as best as possible. Simulations show the proposed framework of encoder could achieve 60X of CR when the tracking successful rate (SR) is still keeping above 90%.Comment: 5 pages with 6figures and 1 table, conferenc

Simultaneous Feature and Body-Part Learning for Real-Time Robot Awareness of Human Behaviors

Robot awareness of human actions is an essential research problem in robotics with many important real-world applications, including human-robot collaboration and teaming. Over the past few years, depth sensors have become a standard device widely used by intelligent robots for 3D perception, which can also offer human skeletal data in 3D space. Several methods based on skeletal data were designed to enable robot awareness of human actions with satisfactory accuracy. However, previous methods treated all body parts and features equally important, without the capability to identify discriminative body parts and features. In this paper, we propose a novel simultaneous Feature And Body-part Learning (FABL) approach that simultaneously identifies discriminative body parts and features, and efficiently integrates all available information together to enable real-time robot awareness of human behaviors. We formulate FABL as a regression-like optimization problem with structured sparsity-inducing norms to model interrelationships of body parts and features. We also develop an optimization algorithm to solve the formulated problem, which possesses a theoretical guarantee to find the optimal solution. To evaluate FABL, three experiments were performed using public benchmark datasets, including the MSR Action3D and CAD-60 datasets, as well as a Baxter robot in practical assistive living applications. Experimental results show that our FABL approach obtains a high recognition accuracy with a processing speed of the order-of-magnitude of 10e4 Hz, which makes FABL a promising method to enable real-time robot awareness of human behaviors in practical robotics applications.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ICRA'1

From Micro to Macro: Uncovering and Predicting Information Cascading Process with Behavioral Dynamics

Cascades are ubiquitous in various network environments. How to predict these cascades is highly nontrivial in several vital applications, such as viral marketing, epidemic prevention and traffic management. Most previous works mainly focus on predicting the final cascade sizes. As cascades are typical dynamic processes, it is always interesting and important to predict the cascade size at any time, or predict the time when a cascade will reach a certain size (e.g. an threshold for outbreak). In this paper, we unify all these tasks into a fundamental problem: cascading process prediction. That is, given the early stage of a cascade, how to predict its cumulative cascade size of any later time? For such a challenging problem, how to understand the micro mechanism that drives and generates the macro phenomenons (i.e. cascading proceese) is essential. Here we introduce behavioral dynamics as the micro mechanism to describe the dynamic process of a node's neighbors get infected by a cascade after this node get infected (i.e. one-hop subcascades). Through data-driven analysis, we find out the common principles and patterns lying in behavioral dynamics and propose a novel Networked Weibull Regression model for behavioral dynamics modeling. After that we propose a novel method for predicting cascading processes by effectively aggregating behavioral dynamics, and propose a scalable solution to approximate the cascading process with a theoretical guarantee. We extensively evaluate the proposed method on a large scale social network dataset. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly outperform other state-of-the-art baselines in multiple tasks including cascade size prediction, outbreak time prediction and cascading process prediction.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure

The exploitation of intercalation techniques in the field of two-dimensional layered materials offers unique opportunities for controlling chemical reactions in confined spaces and developing nanocomposites with desired functionality. In this paper, we demonstrate the exploitation of the novel and facile ‘one-pot’ anion-exchange method for the functionalization of layered double hydroxides (LDHs). As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the intercalation of a series of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters, Na3[PW12O40]•15H2O (Na3PW12), K6[P2W18O62]•14H2O (K6P2W18), and Na9LaW10O36•32H2O (Na9LaW10) into tris(hydroxymethyl)amino-methane (Tris) modified layered double hydroxides (LDHs) under ambient conditions without the necessity of degassing CO2. Investigation of the resultant intercalated materials of Tris-LDHs-PW12 (1), Tris-LDH-P2W18 (2), and Tris-LDH-LaW10 (3) for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RB) and crystal violet (CV) has been carried out, where Tris-LDH-PW12 reveals the best performance in the presence of H2O2. Additionally, degradation of a mixture of RB, MB and CV by Tris-LDH-PW12 follows the order of CV > MB > RB, which is directly related to the designed accessible area of the interlayer space. Also, the composite can be readily recycled and reused at least ten cycles without measurable decrease of activity
