    EXPORTERS' MARKET POWER IN AGRICULTURAL IMPORT MARKETS IN KOREA

    Korea relies more than 70 percent of food supply on a limited number of exporting counties. If the suppliers possess market power, the food security matters. This study tested whether the major exporting countries of corn and wheat have power of determining market prices and enjoy oligopolistic profit in Korea. The empirical results indicate that Korea shows a high degree of import loyalty toward U.S. products. It is evident that the U.S. and Australia have market power in the wheat market, while no distinct power is detected in the corn market. The result for the corn market seems to reflect the severe price competition between the two major exporters, the U.S. and China. It is also shown that the launch of the WTO does not significantly change the structure of market power in the markets considered.International Relations/Trade,

    Upper torso and pelvis linear velocity during the downswing of elite golfers

    BACKGROUND: During a golf swing, analysis of the movement in upper torso and pelvis is a key step to determine a motion control strategy for accurate and consistent shots. However, a majority of previous studies that have evaluated this movement limited their analysis only to the rotational movement of segments, and translational motions were not examined. Therefore, in this study, correlations between translational motions in the 3 axes, which occur between the upper torso and pelvis, were also examined. METHODS: The experiments were carried out with 14 male pro-golfers (age: 29 ± 8 years, career: 8.2 ± 4.8years) who registered in the Korea Professional Golf Association (KPGA). Six infrared cameras (VICON; Oxford Metrics, Oxford, UK) and SB-Clinc software (SWINGBANK Ltd, Korea) were used to collect optical marker trajectories. The center of mass (CoM) of each segment was calculated based on kinematic principal. In addition, peak value of CoM velocity and the time that each peak occurred in each segment during downswing was calculated. Also, using cross-correlation analysis, the degree of coupling and time lags of peak values occurred between and within segments (pelvis and upper torso) were investigated. RESULTS: As a result, a high coupling strength between upper torso and pelvis with an average correlation coefficient = 0.86 was observed, and the coupling between segments was higher than that within segments (correlation coefficient = 0.81 and 0.77, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Such a high coupling at the upper torso and pelvis can be used to reduce the degree of motion control in the central nervous system and maintain consistent patterns in the movement. The result of this study provides important information for the development of optimal golf swing movement control strategies in the future

    Extracellular vesicle-associated miR-135b and -135a regulate stemness in Group 4 medulloblastoma cells by targeting angiomotin-like 2

    Abstract Background Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by tumours, including exosomes, are important factors that regulate cell–cell interactions in oncogenesis. Although EV studies are ongoing, the biological understanding of EV-miRNAs derived from brain tumour spheroid-forming cells (BTSCs) of medulloblastoma is poor. Purposes We explored the specific cellular miRNAs and EV-miRNAs in medulloblastoma BTSCs to determine their potential biological function. Methods Bulk tumor cells (BTCs) and BTSCs were cultured under different conditions from medulloblastoma tissues (N = 10). Results Twenty-four miRNAs were simultaneously increased in both cells and EVs derived from BTSCs in comparison to BTCs. After inhibition of miR-135b or miR135a which were the most significantly increased in BTSCs, cell viability, self-renewal and stem cell marker expression decreased remarkably. Through integrated analysis of mRNAs and miRNAs data, we found that angiomotin-like 2 (AMOTL2), which was significantly decreased, was targeted by both miR-135b and miR-135a. STAT6 and GPX8 were targeted only by miR-135a. Importantly, low expression of AMOTL2 was significantly associated with overall poor survival in paediatric Group 3 and Group 4 medulloblastoma patients. Conclusion Our results indicated that inhibition of miR-135b or miR-135a leads to suppress stemness of BTSC through modulation of AMOTL2
