Privacy Disclosures of Web Sites in Taiwan

This research involves two phases. In the first phase, 339 “.com.tw” and 15 major ISP sites located in Taiwan were examined, in order to draw a picture of the status of Web-site privacy disclosures. The results showed that most of them failed to meet the requirements of the Fair Information Practices. More than 80% of them did not show their privacy policies, and more than 30% failed to provide any statements regarding information privacy practices. Less than 10% of the Web sites explained how privacy concerns might be satisfied and what channels might be utilized for complaint. Over 80% did not display security or privacy seals. Among the Web sites collecting personal ID numbers, credit card numbers and birth dates, only 20% declared their privacy policies. The findings indicate that in comparison to the U.S., the importance of privacy disclosures has not been widely recognized in Taiwan. Sequentially, in the second phase, this study conducted in-depth interviews with the Web-site managers to reveal the possible disclosure determinants. Besides, the possible cultural impacts on Taiwan Web-site privacy practices have been discussed. Finally, some recommendations are given

Linking Customer Retention to Intelligent Technology: An Optimization Approach

Marketing managers in the telecommunication sectors are confronted with considerable complexity. They have to make decisions about the optimum combination of products or offerings, customer groups and the means of interacting with potential customers. Further, in saturated markets such as mobile telephony, it is increasingly important to retain customers potentially to churn. On the optimal campaign planning, this research describes how the customer survey was conducted for those potentially churning customers based on which an optimal campaign planning was followed. This research engages with the subjects of customer retention from the perspective of a major mobile operator in Taiwan. Customers’ preferences with C&C (campaign offer and communication channel) were predicted and input for further analysis for target selection optimization. These models was proved novel in an organizational prototype project suggesting that the use of the hybrid of data mining and optimization approaches can be effective for target selection

Chaotic motions in the real fuzzy electronic circuits

Fuzzy electronic circuit (FEC) is firstly introduced, which is implementing Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy chaotic systems on electronic circuit. In the research field of secure communications, the original source should be blended with other complex signals. Chaotic signals are one of the good sources to be applied to encrypt high confidential signals, because of its high complexity, sensitiveness of initial conditions, and unpredictability. Consequently, generating chaotic signals on electronic circuit to produce real electrical signals applied to secure communications is an exceedingly important issue. However, nonlinear systems are always composed of many complex equations and are hard to realize on electronic circuits. Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is a powerful tool, which is described by fuzzy IF-THEN rules to express the local dynamics of each fuzzy rule by a linear system model. Accordingly, in this paper, we produce the chaotic signals via electronic circuits through T-S fuzzy model and the numerical simulation results provided by MATLAB are also proposed for comparison. T-S fuzzy chaotic Lorenz and Chen-Lee systems are used for examples and are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed electronic circuit. © 2013 Shih-Yu Li et al

Endometrial transcriptome in recurrent miscarriage and recurrent implantation failure

The endometrium becomes receptive to the embryo only in the mid-luteal phase, but not other stages of the menstrual cycle. Endometrial factors play an important role in implantation. Women with recurrent miscarriage and recurrent implantation failure have both been reported to have altered expression of receptivity markers during the window of implantation. We aimed to compare the gene expression profiles of the endometrium in the window of implantation among women with unexplained recurrent implantation failures (RIF) and unexplained recurrent miscarriages (RM) by RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). In total 20 patients (9 RIF and 11 RM) were recruited. In addition 4 fertile subjects were included as reference. Endometrium samples were precisely timed on the 7th day after luteal hormone surge (LH+7). All the 24 samples were extracted for total RNA. The transcriptome was determined by RNA-Seq in first 14 RNA samples (5 RIF, 6 RM, and 3 fertile). Differentially expressed genes between RM and RIF were validated by quantitative real time PCR (qPCR) in all 24 RNA samples (9 RIF, 11 RM and 4 fertile). Complementary and coagulation cascades pathway was the significantly up-regulated in RIF while down-regulated in RM. Differentially expressed genes C3, C4, C4BP, DAF, DF and SERPING1 in complement and coagulation cascade pathway between RM and RIF were further validated by qPCR. This study identified differential molecular pathways in endometrium between RIF and RM, which potentially affect the implantation process

Duration of untreated bipolar disorder: A multicenter study

Little is known about the demographic and clinical differences between short and long duration of untreated bipolar disorder (DUB) in Chinese patients. This study examined the demographic and clinical features of short (≤2 years) and long DUB (\u3e2 years) in China. A consecutively recruited sample of 555 patients with bipolar disorder (BD) was examined in 7 psychiatric hospitals and general hospital psychiatric units across China. Patients’ demographic and clinical characteristics were collected using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. The mean DUB was 3.2 ± 6.0 years; long DUB accounted for 31.0% of the sample. Multivariate analyses revealed that longer duration of illness, diagnosis of BD type II, and earlier misdiagnosis of BD for major depressive disorder or schizophrenia were independently associated with long DUB. The mean DUB in Chinese BD patients was shorter than the reported figures from Western countries. The long-term impact of DUB on the outcome of BD is warranted

RhoGDIβ-induced hypertrophic growth in H9c2 cells is negatively regulated by ZAK

We found that overexpression of RhoGDIβ, a Rho GDP dissociation inhibitor, induced hypertrophic growth and suppressed cell cycle progression in a cultured cardiomyoblast cell line. Knockdown of RhoGDIβ expression by RNA interference blocked hypertrophic growth. We further demonstrated that RhoGDIβ physically interacts with ZAK and is phosphorylated by ZAK in vitro, and this phosphorylation negatively regulates RhoGDIβ functions. Moreover, the ZAK-RhoGDIβ interaction may maintain ZAK in an inactive hypophosphorylated form. These two proteins could negatively regulate one another such that ZAK suppresses RhoGDIβ functions through phosphorylation and RhoGDIβ counteracts the effects of ZAK by physical interaction. Knockdown of ZAK expression in ZAK- and RhoGDIβ-expressing cells by ZAK-specific RNA interference restored the full functions of RhoGDIβ
