Capture on High Curvature Region: Aggregation of Colloidal Particle Bound to Giant Phospholipid Vesicles
A very recent observation on the membrane mediated attraction and ordered
aggregation of colloidal particles bound to giant phospholipid vesicles (I.
Koltover, J. O. R\"{a}dler, C. R. Safinya, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82},
1991(1999)) is investigated theoretically within the frame of Helfrich
curvature elasticity theory of lipid bilayer fluid membrane. Since the concave
or waist regions of the vesicle possess the highest local bending energy
density, the aggregation of colloidal beads on these places can reduce the
elastic energy in maximum. Our calculation shows that a bead in the concave
region lowers its energy . For an axisymmetrical dumbbell
vesicle, the local curvature energy density along the waist is equally of
maximum, the beads can thus be distributed freely with varying separation

Comparing Results of Five Glomerular Filtration Rate-Estimating Equations in the Korean General Population. MDRD Study, Revised Lund-Malmƶ, and Three CKD-EPI Equations
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a widely used index of kidney function. Recently, new formulas such as the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations or the Lund-Malmƶ equation were introduced for assessing eGFR. We compared them with the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation in the Korean adult population.
METHODS: The study population comprised 1,482 individuals (median age 51 [42-59] yr, 48.9% males) who received annual physical check-ups during the year 2014. Serum creatinine (Cr) and cystatin C (CysC) were measured. We conducted a retrospective analysis using five GFR estimating equations (MDRD Study, revised Lund-Malmƶ, and Cr and/or CysC-based CKD-EPI equations). Reduced GFR was defined as eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 mĀ².
RESULTS: For the GFR category distribution, large discrepancies were observed depending on the equation used; category G1 (ā„90 mL/min/1.73 mĀ²) ranged from 7.4-81.8%. Compared with the MDRD Study equation, the other four equations overestimated GFR, and CysC-based equations showed a greater difference (-31.3 for CKD-EPI(CysC) and -20.5 for CKD-EPI(Cr-CysC)). CysC-based equations decreased the prevalence of reduced GFR by one third (9.4% in the MDRD Study and 2.4% in CKD-EPI(CysC)).
CONCLUSIONS: Our data shows that there are remarkable differences in eGFR assessment in the Korean population depending on the equation used, especially in normal or mildly decreased categories. Further prospective studies are necessary in various clinical settings
Multi-User Computation Partitioning for Latency Sensitive Mobile Cloud Applications
Elastic partitioning of computations between mobile devices and cloud is an important and challenging research topic for mobile cloud computing. Existing works focus on the single-user computation partitioning, which aims to optimize the application completion time for one particular single user. These works assume that the cloud always has enough resources to execute the computations immediately when they are offloaded to the cloud. However, this assumption does not hold for large scale mobile cloud applications. In these applications, due to the competition for cloud resources among a large number of users, the offloaded computations may be executed with certain scheduling delay on the cloud. Single user partitioning that
does not take into account the scheduling delay on the cloud may yield significant performance degradation. In this paper, we study, for the first time, Multi-user Computation Partitioning Problem (MCPP), which considers the partitioning of multiple usersā computations together with the scheduling of offloaded computations on the cloud resources. Instead of pursuing the minimum application completion time for every single user, we aim to achieve minimum average completion time for all the users, based on
the number of provisioned resources on the cloud. We show that MCPP is different from and more difficult than the classical job scheduling problems. We design an offline heuristic algorithm, namely SearchAdjust, to solve MCPP. We demonstrate through benchmarks that SearchAdjust outperforms both the single user partitioning approaches and classical job scheduling approaches by 10% on average in terms of application delay. Based on SearchAdjust, we also design an online algorithm for MCPP that can be easily deployed in practical systems. We validate the effectiveness of our online algorithm using real world load traces.

Effect of nickel on the microstructure and mechanical property of die-cast AlāMgāSiāMn alloy
The effect of nickel on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a die-cast AlāMgāSiāMn alloy has been investigated. The results show that the presence of Ni in the alloy promotes the formation of Ni-rich intermetallics. These occur consistently during solidification in the die-cast AlāMgāSiāMn alloy across different levels of Ni content. The Ni-rich intermetallics exhibit dendritic morphology during the primary solidification and lamellar morphology during the eutectic solidification stage. Ni was found to be always associated with iron forming AlFeMnSiNi intermetallics, and no Al3Ni intermetallic was observed when Ni concentrations were up to 2.06 wt% in the alloy. Although with different morphologies, the Ni-rich intermetallics were identified as the same AlFeMnSiNi phase bearing a typical composition of Al[100ā140](Fe,Mn)[2ā7]SiNi[4ā9]. With increasing Ni content, the spacing of the Ī±-AlāMg2Si eutectic phase was enlarged in the AlāMgāSiāMn alloy. The addition of Ni to the alloy resulted in a slight increase in the yield strength, but a significant decrease in the elongation. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased slightly from 300 to 320 MPa when a small amount (e.g. 0.16 wt%) of Ni was added to the alloy, but further increase of the Ni content resulted in a decrease of the UTS.The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in the United Kingdom
