Charge ordering, ferroelectric, and magnetic domains in LuFe2O4 observed by scanning probe microscopy
LuFe2O4 is a multiferroic system which exhibits charge order, ferroelectricity, and ferrimagnetism simultaneously below similar to 230 K. The ferroelectric/charge order domains of LuFe2O4 are imaged with both piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and electrostatic force microscopy (EFM), while the magnetic domains are characterized by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Comparison of PFM and EFM results suggests that the proposed ferroelectricity in LuFe2O4 is not of usual displacive type but of electronic origin. Simultaneous characterization of ferroelectric/charge order and magnetic domains by EFM and MFM, respectively, on the same surface of LuFe2O4 reveals that both domains have irregular patterns of similar shape, but the length scales are quite different. The domain size is approximately 100 nm for the ferroelectric domains, while the magnetic domain size is much larger and gets as large as 1 mu m. Sleep and Epilepsy
Sleep and epilepsy have a complex interrelationship that is influenced by various factors, including the distinct stages of sleep. Non-rapid eye movement sleep promotes epileptic activity, while rapid eye movement sleep suppresses it. Seizures can be triggered by sleep, while sleep deprivation increases seizure susceptibility. Epilepsy disrupts sleep architecture and quality, leading to sleep disturbances and comorbidities, like sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome. Excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue can result from epilepsy and the sedating effects of antiseizure medications. Sleep-related epilepsy exhibits seizures predominantly during sleep, with specific patterns related to sleep stages. Antiseizure medications can directly impact sleep quality and should be carefully considered when treating epilepsy patients with comorbid sleep disorders. Understanding the bidirectional relationship between sleep and epilepsy is crucial for effective management. Optimizing treatment strategies requires recognizing the effects of antiseizure medications on sleep, and addressing sleep-related issues in individuals with epilepsy
Genome-Based Construction of the Metabolic Pathways of Orientia tsutsugamushi and Comparative Analysis within the Rickettsiales Order
Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of
scrub typhus, is an obligate intracellular
bacterium that belongs to the order of
Rickettsiales. Recently, we have reported that
O. tsutsugamushi has a unique
genomic structure, consisting of highly
repetitive sequences, and suggested that it may
provide valuable insight into the evolution of
intracellular bacteria. Here, we have used
genomic information to construct the major
metabolic pathways of
O. tsutsugamushi and performed a
comparative analysis of the metabolic genes and
pathways of O. tsutsugamushi
with other members of the Rickettsiales order.
While O. tsutsugamushi has the
largest genome among the members of this order,
mainly due to the presence of repeated
sequences, its metabolic pathways have been
highly streamlined. Overall, the metabolic
pathways of O. tsutsugamushi
were similar to Rickettsia but
there were notable differences in several
pathways including carbohydrate metabolism, the
TCA cycle, and the synthesis of cell wall
components as well as in the transport systems.
Our results will provide a useful guide to the
postgenomic analysis of
O. tsutsugamushi and lead
to a better understanding of the virulence and
physiology of this intracellular pathogen
