Setting Real Time WIP Levels in Production Lines
A new algorithm is developed for setting WIP level in production lines. It is a pull policy that determines when to authorize a job to be processed. Dynamic information in the system such as machine failures and repairs, and demand variations are taken into consideration to provide an efficient method to dynamically determine the WIP level. Two types of production lines are examined in this paper. The first is production lines which have few random interruptions and the second production line is exposed to frequent interruptions. Experiment results from these two types of production lines illustrate that the new algorithm generates higher service level with lower WIP compared to the CONWIP policy. In addition, the superiority of the new algorithm is more significant when the production line is exposed to frequent random interruptions.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

The BCS Functional for General Pair Interactions
The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) functional has recently received renewed
attention as a description of fermionic gases interacting with local pairwise
interactions. We present here a rigorous analysis of the BCS functional for
general pair interaction potentials. For both zero and positive temperature, we
show that the existence of a non-trivial solution of the nonlinear BCS gap
equation is equivalent to the existence of a negative eigenvalue of a certain
linear operator. From this we conclude the existence of a critical temperature
below which the BCS pairing wave function does not vanish identically. For
attractive potentials, we prove that the critical temperature is non-zero and

Based on the measurements of we determine, in
a model independent way, the allowed content in the scalar meson
. We find that, on the one hand, if this isoscalar resonance is a
pure state [ , a very
large -annihilation term will be needed to accommodate . On the other hand, the component of
should be small enough to avoid excessive induced
from the external -emission. Measurement of production in the
decay will be useful to test the above picture. For the
decay which is kinematically barely or even not
allowed, depending on the mass of , we find that the finite width
effect of plays a crucial role on the resonant three-body decay

Analysis of Inelasticity Effect Due to Damage on Stress Distributions in Composite Laminates
A damage mechanics model characterizing damage behavior of composite materials proposed earlier by the authors is employed to analyze the damage effects on stress field near the free edge in symmetrically laminated graphite/epoxy composites of finite dimensions under umaxial tension. A quasi-three-dimensional finite element analy sis is developed for the present investigation. The results from the damaged and undam aged stress distributions of [0/90°]s, [90/0°]s, and [±45°] s laminates are compared and examined. Pion-Muon Asymmetry Revisited
Long ago an unexpected and unexplainable phenomena was observed. The
distribution of muons from positive pion decay at rest was anisotropic with an
excess in the backward direction relative to the direction of the proton beam
from which the pions were created. Although this effect was observed by several
different groups with pions produced by different means, the result was not
accepted by the physics community, because it is in direct conflict with a
large set of other experiments indicating that the pion is a pseudoscalar
particle. It is possible to satisfy both sets of experiments if helicity-zero
vector particles exist and the pion is such a particle. Helicity-zero vector
particles have direction but no net spin. For the neutral pion to be a vector
particle requires an additional modification to conventional theory as
discussed herein. An experiment is proposed which can prove that the asymmetry
in the distribution of muons from pion decay is a genuine physical effect
because the asymmetry can be modified in a controllable manner. A positive
result will also prove that the pion is NOT a pseudoscalar particle.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Hard-Loop Effective Action for Anisotropic Plasmas
We generalize the hard-thermal-loop effective action of the equilibrium
quark-gluon plasma to a non-equilibrium system which is space-time homogeneous
but for which the parton momentum distribution is anisotropic. We show that the
manifestly gauge-invariant Braaten-Pisarski form of the effective action can be
straightforwardly generalized and we verify that it then generates all n-point
functions following from collisionless gauge-covariant transport theory for a
homogeneous anisotropic plasma. On the other hand, the Taylor-Wong form of the
hard-thermal-loop effective action has a more complicated generalization to the
anisotropic case. Already in the simplest case of anisotropic distribution
functions, it involves an additional term that is gauge invariant by itself,

Anomalous synchronization threshold in coupled logistic maps
We consider regular lattices of coupled chaotic maps. Depending on lattice
size, there may exist a window in parameter space where complete
synchronization is eventually attained after a transient regime. Close outside
this window, an intermittent transition to synchronization occurs. While
asymptotic transversal Lyapunov exponents allow to determine the
synchronization threshold, the distribution of finite-time Lyapunov exponents,
in the vicinity of the critical frontier, is expected to provide relevant
information on phenomena such as intermittency. In this work we scrutinize the
distribution of finite-time exponents when the local dynamics is ruled by the
logistic map . We obtain a theoretical estimate for the
distribution of finite-time exponents, that is markedly non-Gaussian. The
existence of correlations, that spoil the central limit approximation, is shown
to modify the typical intermittent bursting behavior. The present scenario
could apply to a wider class of systems with different local dynamics and

Instability of generalised AdS black holes and thermal field theory
We study black holes in AdS-like spacetimes, with the horizon given by an
arbitrary positive curvature Einstein metric. A criterion for classical
instability of such black holes is found in the large and small black hole
limits. Examples of large unstable black holes have a B\"ohm metric as the
horizon. These, classically unstable, large black holes are locally
thermodynamically stable. The gravitational instability has a dual description,
for example by using the version of the AdS/CFT
correspondence. The instability corresponds to a critical temperature of the

Possible Dibaryons with Strangeness s=-5
In the framework of , the binding energy of the six quark system with
strangeness s=-5 is systematically investigated under the SU(3) chiral
constituent quark model. The single channel calculation with
spins S=0 and 3 and the coupled and channel
calculation with spins S=1 and 2 are considered, respectively. The results show
following observations: In the spin=0 case, is a bound dibaryon
with the binding energy being . In the S=1 case,
is also a bound dibaryon. Its binding energy is ranged from to . In the S=2 and S=3 cases, no evidence of bound dibaryons
are found. The phase shifts and scattering lengths in the S=0 and S=1 cases are
