Single-layer behavior and slow carrier density dynamic of twisted graphene bilayer
We report scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) of
twisted graphene bilayer on SiC substrate. For twist angle ~ 4.5o the Dirac
point ED is located about 0.40 eV below the Fermi level EF due to the electron
doping at the graphene/SiC interface. We observed an unexpected result that the
local Dirac point around a nanoscaled defect shifts towards the Fermi energy
during the STS measurements (with a time scale about 100 seconds). This
behavior was attributed to the decoupling between the twisted graphene and the
substrate during the measurements, which lowers the carrier density of graphene
simultaneously
Application of fibrin glue with bandage contact lens in pterygium surgery
AIM: To explore the efficacy of fibrin glue with bandage contact lens for pain relief after pterygium surgery performed with limbal autograft transplantation.<p>METHODS: A prospective clinical trial was carried out in 52 patients(72 eyes)operated for primary nasal pterygium. All patients were randomly divided into the fibrin glue with bandage contact lens group(experimental group, 28 cases, 38 eyes)and suture group(control group, 24 cases, 34 eyes). Autologous limbal graft taken from the superotemporal limbus was used to cover the sclera after pterygium excision under local anesthesia with 20g/L lidocaine. In experimental group, the transplant was attached to the sclera with fibrin tissue adhesive and in control group with 10-0 Virgin silk sutures. Experimental group weared bandage contact lens after surgery while the control group did not. The degree of pain after surgery was evaluated at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7d after surgery. Follow-up was 6mo, matching degree of graft and complication such as infection, relapse, implant healing badness and subconjunctival cyst were mainly observed and recorded.<p>RESULTS: The pain index scores of the experimental group were significantly less than those of control group(all <i>P</i>=0.000). In observation period, all conjunctival autografts in both groups were successfully attached and were intact without falling off, dissolution or recurrence and there were no complications such as infection, relapse, implant healing badness and subconjunctival cyst.<p>CONCLUSION: Fibrin glue with bandage contact lens could significantly release pain response afterpterygium excision surgery

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Adenomyosis is a common gynecological disease, which is accompanied by a series of immunological and neuroendocrinological changes. Nerve growth factor (NGF) plays a critical role in producing pain, neural plasticity, immunocyte aggregation and release of inflammatory factors. This study aimed to investigate the expression of NGF and its two receptors in uteri and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in an adenomyosis mouse model, as well as their relationship with the severity of adenomyosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Forty newborn ICR mice were randomly divided into the adenomyosis model group and control group (n = 20 in each group). Mice in the adenomyosis model group were orally dosed with 2.7 μmol/kg tamoxifen on days 2-5 after birth. Experiments were conducted to identify the expression of NGF- beta and its receptors, tyrosine kinase receptor (trkA) and p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR), in the uterus and DRG in four age groups (90+/-5 d, 140+/-5 d, 190+/-5 d and 240+/-5 d; n = 5 mice in each group) by western bolt, immunochemistry and real time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Adenomyosis, which became more serious as age increased, was successfully induced in dosed ICR mice. NGF-beta, trkA and p75NTR protein levels in the uterus and trkA mRNA levels in DRG were higher in the older aged adenomyosis model group than those in controls (190+/-5 d and 240+/-5 d groups, P < 0.05). The expression of NGF-beta and its receptors in the uterus increased gradually as age increased for adenomyosis mice (190+/-5 d and 240+/-5 d, P < 0.05, compared with 90+/-5 d) but it showed little change in control mice. The mRNA level of trkA in DRG also increased as age increased in the adenomyosis model group (190+/-5 d and 240+/-5 d, P < 0.05, compared with 90+/-5 d) but was unchanged in controls. The mRNA level of p75NTR in DRG was not different between the adenomyosis and control groups and was stable from young to old mice.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>NGF- beta can be used as an indicator for the severity of adenomyosis. The gradually increasing level of NGF- beta and its receptors while the disease becomes more severe suggests an effect of NGF- beta on pathogenic mechanisms of adenomyosis.</p
Effect of congenital ptosis on astigmatism and axis length
AIM: To investigate the effects of congenital ptosis degree on total astigmatism, corneal astigmatism, intraocular astigmatism and axis length, and to discuss the relation with amblyopia. <p>METHODS: Fifty patients(100 eyes)with congenital ptosis were selected and divided into four groups: 33 eyes in group Ⅰ(normal); 20 eyes in group Ⅱ(mild); 17 eyes in group Ⅲ(moderate); 30 eyes in group Ⅳ(severity). Firstly, they received standardized medical optometry. Absolute value of astigmatism was recorded as total astigmatism. Then, corneal topography was used to measure double eyes for at least 3 times, and the best results were used to record the SimK. Define absolute value of △SimK as corneal astigmatism. Finally, axial length was measured for 5 times by A super-measurement, and take the mean value. Formula: intraocular astigmatism=total astigmatism-corneal astigmatism.<p>RESULTS: There was a significance difference between total astigmatism and cornea astigmatism(<i>P</i>=0.000, 0.002<0.05). Also they were positive correlation with severity of ptosis(Spearman <i>r</i><sub>s</sub>=0.514, 0.721,<i>P</i><0.05), but there was not significance difference in axial orientation, intraocular astigmatism and axial length(all <i>P</i>>0.05). The axial orientation, intraocular astigmatism had no correlation with severity of ptosis.<p>CONCLUSION: The congenital ptosis affects on eye astigmatism through the change of cornea astigmatism, which is related to severity of ptosis, but has no effect on axial length. Electronic Structures of Graphene Layers on Metal Foil: Effect of Point Defects
Here we report a facile method to generate a high density of point defects in
graphene on metal foil and show how the point defects affect the electronic
structures of graphene layers. Our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)
measurements, complemented by first principle calculations, reveal that the
point defects result in both the intervalley and intravalley scattering of
graphene. The Fermi velocity is reduced in the vicinity area of the defect due
to the enhanced scattering. Additionally, our analysis further points out that
periodic point defects can tailor the electronic properties of graphene by
introducing a significant bandgap, which opens an avenue towards all-graphene

Strain Induced One-Dimensional Landau-Level Quantization in Corrugated Graphene
Theoretical research has predicted that ripples of graphene generates
effective gauge field on its low energy electronic structure and could lead to
zero-energy flat bands, which are the analog of Landau levels in real magnetic
fields. Here we demonstrate, using a combination of scanning tunneling
microscopy and tight-binding approximation, that the zero-energy Landau levels
with vanishing Fermi velocities will form when the effective pseudomagnetic
flux per ripple is larger than the flux quantum. Our analysis indicates that
the effective gauge field of the ripples results in zero-energy flat bands in
one direction but not in another. The Fermi velocities in the perpendicular
direction of the ripples are not renormalized at all. The condition to generate
the ripples is also discussed according to classical thin-film elasticity

Vertices with the Second Neighborhood Property in Eulerian Digraphs
The Second Neighborhood Conjecture states that every simple digraph has a
vertex whose second out-neighborhood is at least as large as its first
out-neighborhood, i.e. a vertex with the Second Neighborhood Property. A cycle
intersection graph of an even graph is a new graph whose vertices are the
cycles in a cycle decomposition of the original graph and whose edges represent
vertex intersections of the cycles. By using a digraph variant of this concept,
we prove that Eulerian digraphs which admit a simple dicycle intersection graph
have not only adhere to the Second Neighborhood Conjecture, but have a vertex

The Roles of PI3K/AKT/mTOR and MAPK/ERK Signaling Pathways in Human Pheochromocytomas
Objectives. The roles of PI3K/AKT/mTOR and MAPK/ERK pathways involved in the pathogenesis of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) were demonstrated mostly by in vitro studies with rat or mouse cells and were mainly studied at transcriptional level. This study aimed to investigate the effect of these pathways on the proliferation of human PPGL cells and the activation of these pathways in PPGLs. Methods. Human PPGL cells were treated with sunitinib and inhibitors of PI3K (LY294002), MEK1/2 (U0126), and mTORC1/2 (AZD8055). Cell proliferation was detected by MTT assay. Protein phosphorylation was detected by Western blotting. Results. In most PPGLs, AKT, ERK1/2, and mTOR were activated. LY294002 (10 μM), U0126 (10 μM), AZD8055 (1 μM), and sunitinib (1 μM) inhibited PPGL cell proliferation in ten primary cultures of tissues, including four from patients with gene mutations. MEK1/2 inhibitor decreased mTOR phosphorylation. Inhibition of mTOR reduced phosphorylation of AKT and ERK1/2. Sunitinib inhibited phospho-ERK1/2 and phospho-mTOR. Conclusion. Our study suggested that PI3K/AKT/mTOR and MAPK/ERK signaling pathways play vital roles in human PPGL and are activated in most PPGLs. Inhibiting multiple pathways might be a novel therapeutic approach for PPGLs
