Mass and Mean Velocity Dispersion Relations for Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bulges

Growing evidence indicate supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the mass range of MBHM_{\rm BH}∼106−1010M⊙\sim 10^6-10^{10}M_{\odot} lurking in central bulges of many galaxies. Extensive observations reveal fairly tight power laws of MBHM_{\rm BH} versus the mean stellar velocity dispersion σ\sigma of the host bulge. The dynamic evolution of a bulge and the formation of a central SMBH should be physically linked by various observational clues. In this contribution, we reproduce the empirical MBH−σM_{\rm BH}-\sigma power laws based on a self-similar general polytropic quasi-static bulge evolution and a sensible criterion of forming a SMBH surrounding the central density singularity of a general singular polytropic sphere (SPS) \cite{loujiang2008}. Other properties of host bulges and central SMBHs are also examined. Based on our model, we discuss the intrinsic scatter of the MBH−σM_{\rm BH}-\sigma relation and a scenario for the evolution of SMBHs in different host bulges.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the Proceedings of Science for VII Microquasar Workshop: Microquasars and Beyon

Ishibashi States, Topological Orders with Boundaries and Topological Entanglement Entropy

In this paper, we study gapped edges/interfaces in a 2+1 dimensional bosonic topological order and investigate how the topological entanglement entropy is sensitive to them. We present a detailed analysis of the Ishibashi states describing these edges/interfaces making use of the physics of anyon condensation in the context of Abelian Chern-Simons theory, which is then generalized to more non-Abelian theories whose edge RCFTs are known. Then we apply these results to computing the entanglement entropy of different topological orders. We consider cases where the system resides on a cylinder with gapped boundaries and that the entanglement cut is parallel to the boundary. We also consider cases where the entanglement cut coincides with the interface on a cylinder. In either cases, we find that the topological entanglement entropy is determined by the anyon condensation pattern that characterizes the interface/boundary. We note that conditions are imposed on some non-universal parameters in the edge theory to ensure existence of the conformal interface, analogous to requiring rational ratios of radii of compact bosons.Comment: 38 pages, 5 figure; Added referenc

Sweeping cluster algorithm for quantum spin systems with strong geometric restrictions

Quantum spin systems with strong geometric restrictions give rise to rich quantum phases such as valence bond solids and spin liquid states. However, the geometric restrictions often hamper the application of sophisticated numerical approaches. Based on the stochastic series expansion method, we develop an efficient and exact quantum Monte Carlo "sweeping cluster" algorithm which automatically satisfies the geometrical restrictions. Here we use the quantum dimer model as a benchmark to demonstrate the reliability and power of this algorithm. Comparing to existing numerical methods, we can obtain higher accuracy results for a wider parameter region and much more substantial system sizes
