A Possible Mechanism to Alter Gyromagnetic Factor

Dirac has predicted that the gg factor of an electron is strictly equal to 2 in the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics. However, later physicists have found that this factor can be slightly deviated from 2 (i.e., the problem of anomalous magnetic moments of leptons) when they consider quantum filed theory. This fact thus renders the gg factors of free leptons serving as precision tests for quantum electrodynamics, the standard model and beyond. In this work, we re-examine the problem of gg factor within the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics. We propose a possible mechanism called the ``electron-braidon mixing'', such that the gg factor of an electron can be visibly altered. Our results are hopeful to be verified in experiments and also shed new light to the problem of the anomalous magnetic moments of leptons.Comment: 6+113 pages. 1 figure in Main Text; 2 figures in S

Characteristics of the upper-level outflow and its impact on the rapid intensification of Typhoon Roke (2011)

In this study, we investigate the structural characteristics of the upper-level outflow and its impact on the rapid intensification (RI) of Typhoon Roke (2011), which experienced an evident outflow transformation from equatorward to poleward during its RI period. The simulations by the Weather Research and Forecasting Model suggest that the upper-level outflow extends from 100 hPa to 150 hPa, with an upper-level warm core at around 150 hPa. The upper-level outflow is enhanced ahead of the typhoon intensification, which is closely related to the outflow-environment interaction. Further analyses indicate that at the early stage of Roke (2011) before the RI, the strong equatorward outflow and the updraft south of the typhoon center are enhanced, favoring the onset of RI. During the RI period, the strong divergent flow near the entrance of the southwesterly jet in front of the upper-level trough, induces the poleward outflow. The eddy flux convergence of angular momentum inward propagated to the typhoon center from a 1000-km radius further enhances the poleward outflow and leads to the development of the vertical motion north of the typhoon center. Then Roke (2011) intensifies rapidly. Simultaneously, the shallow weak positive potential vorticity (PV) anomaly south of the southwesterly jet increases the inner-core PV, favoring the sustained intensification of Roke (2011). After Roke (2011) reaches its peak intensity, its intensity decreases due to the increase of vertical wind shear and the approaching of the southwesterly jet. It is indicated that the interaction between the upper-level outflow and the upper-tropospheric trough has significant influence on the RI of TC

Learning to Identify Top Elo Ratings: A Dueling Bandits Approach

The Elo rating system is widely adopted to evaluate the skills of (chess) game and sports players. Recently it has been also integrated into machine learning algorithms in evaluating the performance of computerised AI agents. However, an accurate estimation of the Elo rating (for the top players) often requires many rounds of competitions, which can be expensive to carry out. In this paper, to improve the sample efficiency of the Elo evaluation (for top players), we propose an efficient online match scheduling algorithm. Specifically, we identify and match the top players through a dueling bandits framework and tailor the bandit algorithm to the gradient-based update of Elo. We show that it reduces the per-step memory and time complexity to constant, compared to the traditional likelihood maximization approaches requiring O(t) time. Our algorithm has a regret guarantee of Õ(√T), sublinear in the number of competition rounds and has been extended to the multidimensional Elo ratings for handling intransitive games. We empirically demonstrate that our method achieves superior convergence speed and time efficiency on a variety of gaming tasks

In the title coordination polymer, [Ag(C14H8NO2)]n, the AgI cation is coordinated by two O atoms and one N atom from two symmetry-related acridine-9-carboxylate ligands in a distorted trigonal-planar geometry. The metal atoms are connected by the ligands to form chains running parallel to the b axis. π–π stacking interactions [centroid-to-centroid distances 3.757 (2)–3.820 (2) Å] and weak Ag⋯O interactions further link the chains to form a layer network parallel to the ab plane. The AgI cation is disordered over two positions, with refined site-occupancy factors of 0.73 (3):0.27 (3)

Reduced tolerance to abiotic stress in transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing a Capsicum annuum multiprotein bridging factor 1

BACKGROUND: The pepper fruit is the second most consumed vegetable worldwide. However, low temperature affects the vegetative development and reproduction of the pepper, resulting in economic losses. To identify cold-related genes regulated by abscisic acid (ABA) in pepper seedlings, cDNA representational difference analysis was previously performed using a suppression subtractive hybridization method. One of the genes cloned from the subtraction was homologous to Solanum tuberosum MBF1 (StMBF1) encoding the coactivator multiprotein bridging factor 1. Here, we have characterized this StMBF1 homolog (named CaMBF1) from Capsicum annuum and investigated its role in abiotic stress tolerance. RESULTS: Tissue expression profile analysis using quantitative RT-PCR showed that CaMBF1 was expressed in all tested tissues, and high-level expression was detected in the flowers and seeds. The expression of CaMBF1 in pepper seedlings was dramatically suppressed by exogenously supplied salicylic acid, high salt, osmotic and heavy metal stresses. Constitutive overexpression of CaMBF1 in Arabidopsis aggravated the visible symptoms of leaf damage and the electrolyte leakage of cell damage caused by cold stress in seedlings. Furthermore, the expression of RD29A, ERD15, KIN1, and RD22 in the transgenic plants was lower than that in the wild-type plants. On the other hand, seed germination, cotyledon greening and lateral root formation were more severely influenced by salt stress in transgenic lines compared with wild-type plants, indicating that CaMBF1-overexpressing Arabidopsis plants were hypersensitive to salt stress. CONCLUSIONS: Overexpression of CaMBF1 in Arabidopsis displayed reduced tolerance to cold and high salt stress during seed germination and post-germination stages. CaMBF1 transgenic Arabidopsis may reduce stress tolerance by downregulating stress-responsive genes to aggravate the leaf damage caused by cold stress. CaMBF1 may be useful for genetic engineering of novel pepper cultivars in the future
