    Get PDF
The title compound, C4H8N5 +·C2HO4 −, was obtained from the reaction of oxalic acid and 2,4-diamino-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine. The protonated triazine ring is essentially planar with a maximum deviation of 0.035 (1) Å, but the hydrogen oxalate anion is less planar, with a maximum deviation of 0.131 (1) Å for both carbonyl O atoms. In the crystal, the ions are linked by intermolecular N—H⋯O, N—H⋯N, O—H⋯O and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network. Weak π–π [centroid–centroid distance = 3.763 Å] and C—O⋯π interactions [O⋯centroid = 3.5300 (16) Å, C—O⋯centroid = 132.19 (10)°] are also present

Learning and memory disorders arise from distinct age-associated processes, and aging animals are often used as a model of memory impairment. The root of Polygala tenuifolia has been commonly used in some Asian countries as memory enhancer and its memory improvement has been reported in various animal models. However, there is less research to verify its effect on memory functions in aged animals. Herein, the memory-enhancing effects of the crude extract of Polygala tenuifolia (EPT) on normal aged mice were assessed by Morris water maze (MWM) and step-down passive avoidance tests. In MWM tests, the impaired spatial memory of the aged mice was partly reversed by EPT (100 and 200 mg/kg; P < 0.05) as compared with the aged control mice. In step-down tests, the nonspatial memory of the aged mice was improved by EPT (100 and 200 mg/kg; P < 0.05). Additionally, EPT could increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) activities, and decrease the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the brain tissue of the aged mice. The results showed that EPT improved memory functions of the aged mice probably via its antioxidant properties and via decreasing the activities of MAO and AChE

Perspective on ultramicroporous carbon as sulphur host for Li–S batteries

    Get PDF
Lithium-sulphur (Li-S) batteries are currently considered as next-generation battery technology. Sulphur is an attractive positive electrode for lithium metal batteries, mainly due to its high capacity (1675 mAh g-1) and high specific energy (2600 Wh kg-1). The electrochemical reaction of lithium with sulphur in non-aqueous electrolytes results in the formation of electrolyte soluble intermediate lithium-polysulphides. The dissolved polysulphides shuttle to the anode and get reduced at the anode resulting in Li metal corrosion. The solubility of polysulphide gradually reduces the amount of sulphur in the cathode, thereby limiting the cycle life of Li-S batteries. Several strategies have been proposed to improve the cycling stability of Li-S batteries. A unique approach to eliminate the polysulphide shuttle is to use ultramicroporous carbon (UMC) as a host for sulphur. The pore size of UMC which is below 7 Å, is the bottleneck for carbonate solvents to access sulphur/polysulphides confined in the pores, thereby preventing the polysulphide dissolution. This perspective article will emphasise the role of UMC host in directing the lithiation mechanism of sulphur and in inhibiting polysulphide dissolution, including the resulting parasitic reaction on the lithium anode. Further, the challenges that need to be addressed by UMC-S based Li-S batteries, and the strategies to realise high power density, high Coulombic efficiency, and resilient Li-S batteries will be discussed

Identification of candidate genes and clarification of the maintenance of the green pericarp of weedy rice grains

The weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) pericarp has diverse colors (e.g., purple, red, light-red, and white). However, research on pericarp colors has focused on red and purple, but not green. Unlike many other common weedy rice resources, LM8 has a green pericarp at maturity. In this study, the coloration of the LM8 pericarp was evaluated at the cellular and genetic levels. First, an examination of their ultrastructure indicated that LM8 chloroplasts were normal regarding plastid development and they contained many plastoglobules from the early immature stage to maturity. Analyses of transcriptome profiles and differentially expressed genes revealed that most chlorophyll (Chl) degradation-related genes in LM8 were expressed at lower levels than Chl a/b cycle-related genes in mature pericarps, suggesting that the green LM8 pericarp was associated with inhibited Chl degradation in intact chloroplasts. Second, the F2 generation derived from a cross between LM8 (green pericarp) and SLG (white pericarp) had a pericarp color segregation ratio of 9:3:4 (green:brown:white). The bulked segregant analysis of the F2 populations resulted in the identification of 12 known genes in the chromosome 3 and 4 hotspot regions as candidate genes related to Chl metabolism in the rice pericarp. The RNA-seq and sqRT-PCR assays indicated that the expression of the Chl a/b cycle-related structural gene DVR (encoding divinyl reductase) was sharply up-regulated. Moreover, genes encoding magnesium-chelatase subunit D and the light-harvesting Chl a/b-binding protein were transcriptionally active in the fully ripened dry pericarp. Regarding the ethylene signal transduction pathway, the CTR (encoding an ethylene-responsive protein kinase) and ERF (encoding an ethylene-responsive factor) genes expression profiles were determined. The findings of this study highlight the regulatory roles of Chl biosynthesis- and degradation-related genes influencing Chl accumulation during the maturation of the LM8 pericarp

The Space Advanced Technology demonstration satellite (SATech-01), a mission for low-cost space science and new technology experiments, organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was successfully launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of similar to 500 km on July 27, 2022, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. Serving as an experimental platform for space science exploration and the demonstration of advanced common technologies in orbit, SATech-01 is equipped with 16 experimental payloads, including the solar upper transition region imager (SUTRI), the lobster eye imager for astronomy (LEIA), the high energy burst searcher (HEBS), and a High Precision Magnetic Field Measurement System based on a CPT Magnetometer (CPT). It also incorporates an imager with freeform optics, an integrated thermal imaging sensor, and a multi-functional integrated imager, etc. This paper provides an overview of SATech-01, including a technical description of the satellite and its scientific payloads, along with their on-orbit performance

Subsidiary roles as determinants of subsidiary technology sourcing: empirical evidence from China

    Get PDF
Emerging economies have become new destinations for knowledge sourcing, forcing Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) to reconfigure their global innovation strategies and structure. While foreign subsidiaries located in emerging economies were conventionally viewed as having market or efficiency seeking roles, they have started to evolve towards knowledge-seeking roles. We argue that the conventional wisdom shall be reassessed considering this recent shift. We empirically investigate 129 manufacturing MNE subsidiaries of Fortune 500 companies in China, in terms of their roles and sources of technology. Our results indicate that market and knowledge seeking subsidiaries located in China tend to have a positive impact on the generation of new knowledge, either through locally established MNE R&D laboratories or through collaborations with local firms and scientific institutions

Genome-wide pathway-based quantitative multiple phenotypes analysis.

For complex diseases, genome-wide pathway association studies have become increasingly promising. Currently, however, pathway-based association analysis mainly focus on a single phenotype, which may insufficient to describe the complex diseases and physiological processes. This work proposes a combination model to evaluate the association between a pathway and multiple phenotypes and to reduce the run time based on asymptotic results. For a single phenotype, we propose a semi-supervised maximum kernel-based U-statistics (mSKU) method to assess the pathway-based association analysis. For multiple phenotypes, we propose the fisher combination function with dependent phenotypes (FC) to transform the p-values between the pathway and each marginal phenotype individually to achieve pathway-based multiple phenotypes analysis. With real data from the Alzheimer Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) study and Human Liver Cohort (HLC) study, the FC-mSKU method allows us to specify which pathways are specific to a single phenotype or contribute to common genetic constructions of multiple phenotypes. If we only focus on single-phenotype tests, we may miss some findings for etiology studies. Through extensive simulation studies, the FC-mSKU method demonstrates its advantages compared with its counterparts

Myocardial reperfusion is an effective therapy for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury following myocardial reperfusion is a significant limitation for AMI treatment. Five prime to Xist (FTX) was recognized as a biomarker of multiple diseases, including heart disease. However, the molecular mechanism of FTX in I/R injury is unclear
