    We investigate the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional two-band Hubbard model with different bandwidths. The density-matrix renormalization group method is applied to calculate the averaged electron occupancies nn as a function of the chemical potential μ\mu. Both at quarter and half fillings, "charge plateaux" appear in the nn-μ\mu plot, where dμ/dnd\mu/dn diverges and the Mott insulating states are realized. To see how the orbital polarization in the one-quarter charge plateau develops, we apply the second-order perturbation theory from the strong-coupling limit at quarter filling. The resultant Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital model includes a magneticmagnetic field coupled to orbital pseudo-spins. This field originates from the discrepancy between the two bandwidths and leads to a finite orbital pseudo-spin magnetization.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of LT2

    The thermoluminescence (TL) technique used for dating the terrestrial age of meteorites is based on the TL fading of interior samples. The depth dependence of the TL for Antarctic meteorites with fusion crust is measured. Usually, meteorites are powdered and their TL measured under a photomultiplier. In this case, a TL spatial distribution of a cross section of antarctic meteorites is measured using a read out system of spatial distribution of TL, since a meteorite is made up of inhomogeneous material.     Elementary excitations of the symmetric spin-orbital model: The XY limit

    The elementary excitations of the 1D, symmetric, spin-orbital model are investigated by studying two anisotropic versions of the model, the pure XY and the dimerized XXZ case, with analytical and numerical methods. While they preserve the symmetry between spin and orbital degrees of freedom, these models allow for a simple and transparent picture of the low--lying excitations: In the pure XY case, a phase separation takes place between two phases with free--fermion like, gapless excitations, while in the dimerized case, the low-energy effective Hamiltonian reduces to the 1D Ising model with gapped excitations. In both cases, all the elementary excitations involve simultaneous flips of the spin and orbital degrees of freedom, a clear indication of the breakdown of the traditional mean-field theory.Comment: Revtex, two figure

    A New Planar-Type Leakage Current and Impedance Microsensor for Detection of Interaction between Electrolyte- Entrapping Liposome and Protein

    AbstractWe have developed a new leakage current microsensor by using simpler planar processes than Si-surface-bulk micromachining processes used in the previous microwell structure. This sensor fabrication and structure can easily make a target solution volume smaller than μL with excellent immobilization of the droplet and intact biomolecules as sensing elements, as a result, reduce effectively the background noise current in the microsensor and improve reproducibility of the results. The leakage current due to the biochemical interaction was successfully evaluated, dependent on the droplet protein concentration. Cole-Cole plots from the impedance analysis also show quantitative difference between with and without the interaction, depending on the charge-transfer impedance that results from the condition and structure of liposome and lipid membrane after the interaction

    Thermodynamics of the one-dimensional SU(4) symmetric spin-orbital model

    The ground state properties and the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional SU(4) symmetric spin system with orbital degeneracy are investigated using the quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm. The spin-spin correlation functions exhibit a 4-site periodicity, and their low temperature behavior is controlled by two correlation lengths that diverge like the inverse temperature, while the entropy is linear in temperature and its slope is consistent with three gapless modes of velocity π/2\pi/2.
