Room Temperature Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Rutile Ti1-xCoxO2-\delta Epitaxial Thin Films Grown by Sputtering Method
Room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor rutile Ti1-xCoxO2-\delta (101)
epitaxial thin films were grown on r-sapphire substrates by a dc sputtering
method. Ferromagnetic magnetization, magnetic circular dichroism, and anomalous
Hall effect were clearly observed at room temperature in sputter-grown films
for the first time. The magnetization value is nearly as large as 3\mu B/Co
that is consistent with the high spin state Co2+ in this compound recently
established by spectroscopic methods. Consequently, its originally large
magneto-optical response is further enhanced.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
The Migration, Culture, and Lifestyle of the Paleolithic Ryukyu Islanders
Roughly 35,000 years ago, hunting-fishing-gathering people occupied the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, a chain of small-sized islands in the western Pacific. There are Paleolithic sites scattered over most of the relatively large islands, thereby suggesting an extensive human dispersal over the sea at least 30,000 years ago. Recent morphological and genetic studies of the human fossils found in this area revealed that Paleolithic occupants might have an affinity with the modern and prehistoric populations of Southeast Asia. Recent excavation of Paleolithic sediments at Sakitari Cave, Okinawa Island, provided a variety of shell artifacts, including beads, scrapers, and fishhooks, and evidence of seasonal consumption of aquatic animals, especially freshwater crabs. The Paleolithic Ryukyu Islanders’ culture and lifestyle, which made use of unique resources, demonstrate behavioral adaptations to living on relatively small islands
High Prevalence of Sinusitis in Children with Henoch-Schönlein Purpura
We evaluated the prevalence and the types of infectious foci in oral as well as ear, nose, and throat diseases, and we examined incidence of renal involvement with active treatment for focal infection in children with Henoch-Schönlein Purpura. A total of 96 children who presented at Aichi Children's Health and Medical Center and were diagnosed as having HSP were evaluated for infectious foci in the ear, nose, throat, and oral cavities. Seventy-one of 96 children (74.0%) had some type of infectious lesion, such as sinusitis or tonsillitis, and the prevalence of sinusitis was the highest (51 cases, 53.7%). In 44 HSP patients without renal involvement at the first examination, the incidence of nephritis was lower (13.6%) than in previous reports (17–54%) due to our aggressive intervention for infectious foci

Assessment of Melanoma-Initiating Cell Markers and Conventional Parameters in Sentinel Lymph Nodes of Malignant Melanoma
Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsies have widely been used for the detection of occult LN metastasis of malignant melanoma (MM). In addition to conventional biomarkers, we assessed the diagnostic and prognostic significance of melanoma-initiating cell (MIC) markers in SLNs of MM. We examined the expressions of gp100, MART-1 and tyrosinase mRNA for routine diagnosis and those of ABCB5, CD133, nestin, KDM5B, NGFR and RANK mRNA as MIC markers. The presence of micrometastasis was confirmed immunohistochemically using antibodies to S-100, HMB-45, MART-1, and tyrosinase. Discordance between immunohistochemical and molecular data was observed in 14 of 70 (20.0%) patients, among whom five (7.1%) were positive for only molecular markers;two of these five patients tested positive for micrometastasis by repeated immunohistochemical stainings. The quantitative expression levels of gp100, MART-1, and tyrosinase mRNA were significantly higher in the metastatic LNs;the cut-off values remain to be elucidated. ABCB5 mRNA expression was detected more frequently in the metastatic SLNs (p<0.05) and in the group of patients with recurrence. To make a definite diagnosis of metastasis, we still need a combination of immunohistochemical and molecular probes. ABCB5 might be a suitable molecular marker for the detection of melanoma-initiating cells in SLNs
Synthesis and In Vitro Assessment of pH-Sensitive Human Serum Albumin Conjugates of Pirarubicin
In a previous study, we reported on the development of a synthetic polymer conjugate of pirarubicin (THP) that was formed via an acid-labile hydrazone bond between the polymer and the THP. However, the synthetic polymer itself was non-biodegradable, which could lead to unexpected adverse effects. Human serum albumin (HSA), which has a high biocompatibility and good biodegradability, is also a potent carrier for delivering antitumor drugs. The objective of this study was to develop pH-sensitive HSA conjugates of THP (HSA-THP), and investigate the release of THP and the cytotoxicity under acidic conditions in vitro for further clinical development. HSA-THP was synthesized by conjugating maleimide hydrazone derivatives of THP with poly-thiolated HSA using 2-iminothiolane, via a thiol-maleimide coupling reaction. We synthesized two types of HSA-THP that contained different amounts of THP (HSA-THP2 and HSA-THP4). Free THP was released from both of the HSA conjugates more rapidly at an acidic pH, and the rates of release for HSA-THP2 and HSA-THP4 were similar. Moreover, both HSA-THPs exhibited a higher cytotoxicity at acidic pH than at neutral pH, which is consistent with the effective liberation of free THP under acidic conditions. These findings suggest that these types of HSA-THPs are promising candidates for further development
Violation of the two-time Leggett-Garg inequalities for a harmonic oscillator
We investigate the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequalities for a harmonic
oscillator in various quantum states. We focus on the two-time
quasi-probability distribution function with a dichotomic variable constructed
with the position operator of a harmonic oscillator. First, we developed a new
formula to compute the two-time quasi-probability distribution function, whose
validity is demonstrated in comparison with the formula developed in the recent
paper by Mawby and Halliwell[Phys.Rev.A, 107 032216 (2023)]. Second, we
demonstrated the variety of the violation of the two-time Leggett-Garg
inequalities assuming various quantum states of a harmonic oscillator including
the squeezed coherent state and the thermal squeezed coherent state. Third, we
demonstrated that a certain type of extension of the dichotomic variable and
the corresponding projection operator can boost violation of the Leggett-Garg
inequalities for the ground state and the squeezed state. We also discuss when
the Leggett-Garg inequalities are violated in an intuitive manner.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure
Splenic Infarction in Acute Cytomegalovirus and Human Parvovirus Concomitant Infection
We present a case report of a 35-year-old woman who had splenic infarction. She had persistent high fever, systemic joint pain, and abnormal liver function. She was diagnosed with cytomegalovirus and human parvovirus B19 concomitant infection. Her coagulopathy test revealed no abnormal results. She was treated with intravenous ganciclovir for 13 days; consequently, her splenic infarction improved after 7 weeks. As per our knowledge, this is the first case of cytomegalovirus and parvovirus B19 coinfection complicated by splenic infarction. Cytomegalovirus and parvovirus B19 may induce a hypercoagulation state during the acute phase
