    A Measurement of the Quadrupole Power Spectrum in the Clustering of the 2dF QSO Survey

    We report a measurement of the quadrupole power spectrum in the two degree field (2dF) QSO redshift (2QZ) survey. The analysis uses an algorithm parallel to that for the estimation of the standard monopole power spectrum without first requiring computation of the correlation function or the anisotropic power spectrum. The error on the quadrupole spectrum is rather large but the best fit value of the bias parameter from the quadrupole spectrum is consistent with that from previous investigations of the 2dF data.Comment: 12pages, accepted by PAS

    Subcutaneous endoscopically assisted ligation using miniport for the treatment of girls with inguinal hernia

    Background This report describes the first miniport method using  subcutaneous endoscopically assisted ligation (SEAL) for the treatment of girls with inguinal hernia. To validate its safety and efficacy, the  authors evaluated their early experiences.Methods Between April 2014 and December 2014, 19 SEALs using miniport were performed on 14 patients at the Fukaya Red-Cross Hospital, Saitama, Japan. Their mean age was 6 years (range, 11–128 months). This technique was performed using two ports (a 5mm port placed using the open technique and an additional 2mm miniport). A 5mm laparoscope was inserted via the umbilicus. The miniport was introduced percutaneously in the inguinal region under laparoscopic guidance and manipulated around the medial or lateral   hemicircumference of the internal ring extraperitoneally to place a purse-string around the internal ring. The hernia sac and patent processus vaginalis were closed at the level of the internal inguinal ring   extraperitoneally with circuit suturing using the 2mm miniport. Only the umbilical fascia was closed with an absorbable suture. No skin sutures were applied. We collected data regarding operative time, complications,and recurrence. Results The mean operative time was 20 ±6 min (unilateral, n =9) or 42± 8 min (bilateral, n= 5). The mean follow-up period was 12.8 ± 2.5 (range, 9–19) months. No intraoperative complications associated with theprocedure occurred and no hernial recurrences have been identified so far.Conclusion SEAL using miniport proved to be a successful operative procedure compared with other  laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure procedures and produced excellent cosmetic results. SEAL using miniport for the treatment of girls with inguinal hernias appears to be safe, effective, and reliable.Keywords: inguinal hernia, miniport, SEA

    One-Year Outcome Predictors of Strabismus Surgery from Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography with Multiple B-Scan Averaging

    Strabismologists are eager to identify preoperative or intraoperative strabismus surgery outcome predictors because of the variable effects in each patient. Conjunctival closure position recession after rectus muscle recession is effective for correcting large angle strabismus. The elasticity of the conjunctiva and Tenon’s capsule is important for strabismus surgery management. In this longitudinal study, we evaluated the prognosis of conjunctiva and Tenon’s capsule thickness (CTT) near the limbus 1 year after strabismus surgery with a limbal conjunctival incision using swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography with multiple B-scan averaging. Also, we identified preoperative and/or intraoperative parameters associated with corrective effects 1 year after surgery in 15 consecutive treatment-naïve patients with exotropia or esotropia who underwent recession and resection. The 1-year CTT was greater than the preoperative CTT on the resection side (269 ± 111 vs 183 ± 53 μm, P < 0.001) but was smaller on the recession side (137 ± 54 vs 183 ± 71 μm, P = 0.02). The corrective effect of surgery (1.6 ± 0.3°/mm) was most strongly correlated with preoperative CTT on the recession side (P = 0.005, β = −0.73). Hence, CTT on the recession side may provide adjunctive information for strabismus treatment

    Synchrotron-radiation circular-dichroism spectroscopy was used to reveal that the DNA damage response induces a decrement of α-helix and an increment of β-strand contents of histone H3-H4 extracted from X-ray-irradiated human HeLa cells. The trend of the structural alteration was qualitatively opposite to that of our previously reported results for histone H2A-H2B. These results strongly suggest that histones share roles in DNA damage responses, particularly in DNA repair processes and chromatin remodeling, via a specific structural alteration of each histone

    Minoxidil Nanoparticles Targeting Hair Follicles Enhance Hair Growth in C57BL/6 Mice

    We previously found that 1% minoxidil (MXD) nanoparticles prepared using a bead mill method led to an increase I n hair follicle delivery and hair growth in C57BL/6 mice. In the present study, we designed a nanoparticle formulation containing 5% MXD (MXD-NPs) using the bead mill method and investigated the hair-growth effect of MXD-NPs and a commercially available MXD solution (CA-MXD). Hair growth and in vivo permeation studies were conducted using C57BL/6 mice. Moreover, we examined the MXD contents in the upper (hair bulge) and the lower hair follicle (hair bulb) and observed the hair follicle epithelial stem cells (HFSC) by immunohistochemical staining using the CD200 antibody. The mean particle size of the MXD in the MXD-NPs was 139.8 nm ± 8.9 nm. The hair-growth effect of the MXD-NPs was higher than that of CA-MXD, and the MXD content in the hair bulge of mice treated with MXD-NPs was 7.4-fold that of the mice treated with CA-MXD. In addition, the activation of HFSC was observed around the bulge in the MXD-NPs-treated mice. We showed that MXD-NPs enable the accumulation of MXD in the upper hair follicles more efficiently than CA-MXD, leading the activation of HFSC and the hair growth
