    Theory of Fano effect in cavity quantum electrodynamics

    We propose a Markovian quantum master equation that can describe the Fano effect directly, by assuming a standard cavity quantum electrodynamics system. The framework allows us to generalize the Fano formula, applicable over the weak and strong coupling regimes with pure dephasing. A formulation of its emission spectrum is also given in a consistent manner. We then find that the interference responsible for the Fano effect is robust against pure dephasing. This is counterintuitive because the impact of interference is, in general, severely reduced by decoherence processes. Our approach thus provides a basis for theoretical treatments of the Fano effect and new insights into the quantum interference in open quantum systems

    Stoma-Closure-Induced Fulminant Pseudomembranous Colitis Recovered by Adjunctive Intracolic Vancomycin with Postural Change

    A 67-year-old man with a history of low anterior resection and diverting loop transverse colostomy for rectal carcinoma developed fulminant pseudomembranous colitis after stoma closure. Oral administration of vancomycin at 0.5 g every 6 h and colonoscopy with intracolic vancomycin administration was unsuccessful, but continuation of intracolic vancomycin with postural change resulted in dramatic recovery. Postural change may extend the efficacy of intracolic vancomycin, and intracolic vancomycin should be considered as an option between conventional therapy and surgical intervention for pseudomembranous colitis

    Multimodal treatment for resectable epithelial type malignant pleural mesothelioma

    BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare malignancy. The outcome remains poor despite complete surgical resection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with histologicaly proven epithelial type malignant pleural mesothelioma undergoing extrapleural pneumonectomy with systemic chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy before and after surgical resection were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Ten out of 11 patients underwent complete surgical resection, of these 7 patients had stage I disease. Of these 7 patients, 5 are alive without any recurrence, a 2-year survival rate of 80% was observed in this group. There was no operative mortality or morbidity. CONCLUSION: Extrapleural pneumonectomy with perioperative adjuvant treatment is safe and effective procedure for epithelial type malignant pleural mesothelioma

    Anti-proliferative effect of Moringa oleifera Lam (Moringaceae) leaf extract on human colon cancer HCT116 cell line

    Purpose: To investigate the in vitro anti-proliferative effect and mechanism of action of Moringa oleifera Lam. leaf extract on human colon carcinoma HCT116 cell line.Methods: M. oleifera leaves were extracted with methanol. It was fractionated by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Several fractions were identified by thin layer chromatography (TLC), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). The growth inhibitory activity and mechanism of action of the extracts in HCT116 colon cancer cells were investigated by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and Western blotting.Results: Successive fractions from M. oleifera leaf crude extracts by column  chromatography were combined into four pooled batches (MOL1 - MOL4) according to their absorbance at 260 nm and TLC pattern. MOL2 and MOL3 contain astragalin and isoquercetin, respectively. The results from MTT assay indicated that cell proliferation was significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited in a concentration-dependent fashion, especially by MOL2, MOL3 and MOL4. MOL2 and MOL3 exhibited a stronger cell growth  inhibition than their major ingredients. The anti-proliferative activity of MOL2 - MOL4 in HCT116 colon cancer cells was  mediated by downregulation of ERK1/2 phosphorylation.Conclusion: M. oleifera leaf extract has a strong anti-proliferative activity which is exerted by decreasing ERK1/2 phosphorylation.     Prognostic value of visceral pleural invasion in resected non–small cell lung cancer diagnosed by using a jet stream of saline solution

    AbstractObjectiveVisceral pleural invasion caused by non–small cell lung cancer is a factor in the poor prognosis of patients with that disease. We investigated the relationship between the diagnosis of visceral pleural invasion by using a jet stream of saline solution, which was previously reported as a new cytologic method to more accurately detect the presence of visceral pleural invasion, and prognosis.MethodsFrom January 1992 through December 1998, 143 consecutive patients with peripheral non–small cell lung cancer that appeared to reach the visceral pleura underwent a surgical resection at the Department of Thoracic Oncology, National Kyushu Cancer Center. The surface of the visceral pleura in patients undergoing lung cancer resection was irrigated with a jet stream of saline solution. The diagnosis of visceral pleural invasion was determined by means of either a pathologic examination or by means of a jet stream of saline solution. In addition, a cytologic examination of the pleural lavage fluid obtained immediately after a thoracotomy was evaluated.ResultsForty-nine (34%) resected tumors were identified as having visceral pleural invasion. The diagnosis of visceral pleural invasion in 31, 6, and 12 patients was determined by using a jet stream of saline solution alone, pathologic examination alone, or both, respectively. The visceral pleural invasion and positive findings of intrapleural lavage cytology were linked. Although there was no significant difference between the incidence of distant metastases in the patients with visceral pleural invasion and those without visceral pleural invasion, the incidence of local recurrence, especially regarding carcinomatous pleuritis (malignant pleural effusion, pleural dissemination, or both), in the patients with visceral pleural invasion was significantly higher than in those without visceral pleural invasion. The recurrence-free survival of patients with visceral pleural invasion was significantly shorter than that of patients without visceral pleural invasion (P = .004), even patients with stage I disease (P = .02). There was also a significant difference between the patients with or without visceral pleural invasion in the overall survival (P = .02). Visceral pleural invasion was independently associated with a poor recurrence-free survival on the basis of multivariate analyses (P = .03), as were sex (P = .03), age (P = 002), and the stage of the disease (P < .0001).ConclusionsThis study confirmed that the jet stream of saline solution method in addition to ordinary pathologic examination was useful for detecting visceral pleural invasion, which is considered to be one of the causes of local recurrence, especially in carcinomatous pleuritis

    Limitation in the Photosynthetic Acclimation to High Temperature in Canopy Leaves of Quercus serrata

    As temperature dependence in many biological processes is generally a bell-shaped curve, warming may be benefitial at cooler climate but deterimental at warmer climate. Although warming responses are expected to vary between different temperature regimes even in the same species, such variations are poorly understood. We established open-top canopy chambers, in which average daytime leaf temperature was increased by ca. 1.0°C, at the canopy top of Quercus serrata in a deciduous forest in high (HL) and low (LL) latitude sites and studied temperature dependence of photosynthesis in the leaves across seasons. In control leaves, photosynthetic rates were higher in LL than in HL. Reponse to warming was different between HL and LL; an increase in growth temperature increased photosynthetic rates at higher leaf temperatures in HL but decreased in LL. Lower photosynthetic rate in the warming treatment in LL was partly explained by lower leaf mass per area and leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area. Optimal temperature that maximizes photosynthetic rate (Topt) linearly increased with increasing growth temperature (GT) in HL, whereas it was saturating against GT in LL, suggesting that Topt in Q. serrata has an upper limit. The variation in Topt was explained by the activation energy of the maximum carboxylation rate (EaV). Our results suggest an upper limit in temperature acclimation of photosynthesis, which may be one of the determinants of southern limitation of the distribution

    Coronary intervention has come to achieve good results with the use of new devices, such as Rotablator (ROTA), new directional coronary atherectomy (DCA), and a special guide wire, even for lesions in which good results were not obtained with plain old balloon angioplasty. In the present study, we evaluated the initial results in patients who underwent ROTA procedures, coronary intervention for chronic total occlusion (CTO), and new DCA procedures in our hospital between January and December 2001. (1) There were 99 patients who underwent ROTA, with an average age of 68±12 years, a lesion length of 15.9±9.9 mm, a reference vessel diameter of 2.7±0.6 mm, and a success rate of 98%. Among these 99 patients, there were 82 patients (83%) with B2 or C type lesion, which is difficult to treat. (2) There were 61 patients with CTO who underwent coronary intervention, with an average age of 63±9 years, an occlusion length of 22.8±13.3 mm, a reference vessel diameter of 2.6±0.7 mm, and a success rate of 82%. (3) There were 5 patients who underwent DCA for ostial lesion of left anterior desending artery and the target lesion was successfully dilated in all these patients. These results indicated that new devices for coronary intervention have made it possible to treat a wider range of lesions, but restenosis still remains to be solved. In Europe and the U.S.A., restenosis is reported to have been drastically reduced by drug eluting stents, which are expected to be introduced in Japan in the future
