    Loss of spinal substance P pain transmission under the condition of LPA(1 )receptor-mediated neuropathic pain

    Among various machineries occurring in the experimental neuropathic pain model, there exists the loss of pain transmission through C-fiber neurons as well as the hypersensitivity through A-fibers. The current study reveals that molecular machineries underlying the latter hypersensitivity are derived from the events through LPA(1 )receptor and its downstream RhoA-activation following peripheral nerve injury. The loss of C-fiber responses, which are mediated by spinal substance P (SP) pain transmission was observed with the nociceptive flexor responses by intraplantar injection of SP in nerve-injured mice. The immunohistochemistry revealed that SP signal in the dorsal horn was markedly reduced in such mice. All these changes were completely abolished in LPA(1)(-/- )mice or by the pretreatment with BoNT/C3, a RhoA inhibitor. In addition, the loss of C-fiber responses and the down-regulation of spinal SP signal induced by single intrathecal LPA injection were also abolished in such treatments. All these results suggest that the loss of pain transmission through polymodal C-fiber neurons is also mediated by the LPA(1 )activation following nerve injury

    Impedance-matched High-overtone Bulk Acoustic Resonator

    A high-overtone bulk acoustic resonator (HBAR), in which a piezoelectric transducer is set on an acoustic cavity, has been attracting attention in both fundamental research and RF applications due to its scalability, high frequency, and high quality factor. The acoustic impedance matching in HBARs is crucial for efficient acoustic power transfer from the piezoelectric transducer to the cavity. However, impedance mismatch remains in most HBARs due to the metal layer insertion between the piezoelectric layer and cavity substrate. In this study, we fabricated a nearly impedance-matched high-quality HBAR using an epitaxial AlN piezoelectric layer directly grown on a conductive SiC cavity substrate with no metal layer insertion. The small impedance mismatch was verified from the variation in the free spectral range (FSR), which is comparable to the best value in previously reported HBARs. The experimentally obtained FSR spectra was greatly reproduced by using the Mason model. Broadband phonon cavity modes up to the K-band (26.5 GHz) were achieved by reducing the thickness of the AlN layer from 800 to 200 nm. The high figure of merit of f×Q1.3×1013 Hzf\times\text{Q} \sim 1.3\times 10^{13}\ \textrm{Hz} at 10 GHz was also obtained. Our nearly impedance-matched high-quality HBAR will enable the development of RF applications, such as low-phase noise oscillators and acoustic filters, as well as research on high-frequency acoustic systems hybridized with electric, optical, and magnetic systems

    Changes in biotin levels during production of natto, Japanese fermented soybean

    The change of biotin level during production of natto (Japanese fermented soybean) was investigated in this study.  The total biotin level was measured by an agar plate bioassay using Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC 8014.  The total biotin level decreased during water soaking, but increased after the fermentation of soybeans using Bacillus subtilis var. natto (B. natto) and reached a maximum level.  The increase of total biotin was not affected by Asp, Arg, and Ile which promoted the growth of L. plantarum in high concentrations.  The peak level of biotin in the fermented soybeans was significantly higher than that of dry soybeans.  The fermented soybeans at the biotin peak level were adequate for food.  In addition, we detected 9 and 4 biotinylated polypeptides in the soybeans and B. natto used in this study, respectively.  We speculated that the increase of biotin level may depend on the increase of the 4 biotinylated polypeptides and free biotin in B. natto

    Eye contrast polarity is critical for face recognition by infants

    Just as faces share the same basic arrangement of features, with two eyes above a nose above a mouth, human eyes all share the same basic contrast polarity relations, with a sclera lighter than an iris and a pupil, and this is unique among primates. The current study examined whether this bright-dark relationship of sclera to iris plays a critical role in face recognition from early in development. Specifically, we tested face discrimination in 7- and 8-month-old infants while independently manipulating the contrast polarity of the eye region and of the rest of the face. This gave four face contrast polarity conditions: fully positive condition, fully negative condition, positive face with negated eyes ( negative eyes ) condition, and negated face with positive eyes ( positive eyes ) condition. In a familiarization and novelty preference procedure, we found that 7- and 8-month-olds could discriminate between faces only when the contrast polarity of the eyes was preserved (positive) and that this did not depend on the contrast polarity of the rest of the face. This demonstrates the critical role of eye contrast polarity for face recognition in 7- and 8-month-olds and is consistent with previous findings for adults
