    Suzaku Observations of M82 X-1 : Detection of a Curved Hard X-ray Spectrum

    A report is presented on Suzaku observations of the ultra-luminous X-ray source X-1 in the starburst galaxy M82, made three time in 2005 October for an exposure of ~ 30 ks each. The XIS signals from a region of radius 3 around the nucleus defined a 2-10 keV flux of 2.1 x 10^-11 erg s-1 cm-2 attributable to point sources. The 3.2-10 keV spectrum was slightly more convex than a power-law with a photon index of 1.7. In all observations, the HXD also detected signals from M82 up to ~ 20 keV, at a 12-20 keV flux of 4.4 x 10^-12 erg s-1 cm-2 . The HXD spectrum was steeper than that of the XIS. The XIS and HXD spectra can be jointly reproduced by a cutoff power-law model, or similar curved models. Of the detected wide-band signals, 1/3 to 2/3 are attributable to X-1, while the remainder to other discrete sources in M82. Regardless of the modeling of these contaminants, the spectrum attributable to X-1 is more curved than a power-law, with a bolometric luminosity of (1.5 -3) x 10 ^40 erg s-1. These results are interpreted as Comptonized emission from a black hole of 100-200 solar masses, radiating roughly at the Eddington luminosity.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japa

    Support Needs and Service Provision for Social Participation of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

    Background: Person-centered support based on self-determination is needed for persons with intellectual disabilities to participate in society in Japan. However, work supporters may be unable to provide sufficient support for this purpose. Objective: This study analyzes work supporters’ implementation of necessary support to understand persons with intellectual disabilities’ support needs. Methods: This study compared persons with intellectual disabilities’ support needs with the implementation of support from work supporters at vocational rehabilitation agencies (Survey 1) and the support needs of persons with intellectual disabilities (Survey 2). Results: The results showed that the persons with intellectual disabilities most required support related to daily living. This was consistent with the support provided by the work supporters. However, there were situations wherein the smooth transition of support was not provided, which was attributed to the lack of knowledge and cross-disciplinary involvement of the work supporters in the employment-related welfare services for persons with disabilities. Conclusions: Possessing the knowledge and skills required for vocational rehabilitation and working in vocational rehabilitation agencies could contribute to the smooth transition of support for persons with intellectual disabilities. Accordingly, the results can clarify the required role of work supporters for persons with intellectual disabilities future participation in society

    Morphogenesis of the Spleen During the Human Embryonic Period

    We aimed to observe morphological changes in the spleen from the emergence of the primordium to the end of the embryonic period using histological serial sections of 228 samples. Between Carnegie stages (CSs) 14 and 17, the spleen was usually recognized as a bulge in the dorsal mesogastrium (DM), and after CS 20, the spleen became apparent. Intrasplenic folds were observed later. A high-density area was first recognized in 6 of the 58 cases at CS 16 and in all cases examined after CS 18. The spleen was recognized neither as a bulge nor as a high-density area at CS 13. The mesothelium was pseudostratified until CS 16 and was replaced with high columnar cells and then with low columnar cells. The basement membrane was obvious after CS 17. The mesenchymal cells differentiated from cells in the DM, and sinus formation started at CS 20. Hematopoietic cells were detected after CS 18. The vessels were observed at CS 14 in the DM. Hilus formation was observed after CS 20. The parallel entries of the arteries and veins were observed at CS 23. The rate of increase in spleen length in relation to that of stomach length along the cranial-caudal direction was 0.51±0.11, which remained constant during CSs 19 and 23, indicating that their growths were similar. These data may help to better understand the development of normal human embryos and to detect abnormal embryos in the early stages of development

    miR-1 and Tooth Development

    Many genes encoding growth factors, receptors, and transcription factors are induced by the epithelial-mesenchymal interaction during tooth development. Recently, numerous functions of microRNAs (miRNAs) are reportedly involved in organogenesis and disease. miRNAs regulate gene expression by inhibiting translation and destabilizing mRNAs. However, the expression and function of miRNAs in tooth development remain poorly understood. This study aimed to analyze the expression of miRNAs produced during tooth development using a microarray system to clarify the role of miRNAs in dental development. miR-1 showed a unique expression pattern in the developing tooth. miR-1 expression in the tooth germ peaked on embryonic day 16.5, decreasing gradually on postnatal days 1 and 3. An in situ hybridization assay revealed that miR-1 is expressed at the cervical loop of the dental epithelium. The expression of miR-1 and connexin (Cx) 43, a target of miR-1, were inversely correlated both in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of miR-1 induced the expression of Cx43 in dental epithelial cells. Interestingly, cells with miR-1 downregulation proliferated slower than the control cells. Immunocytochemistry revealed that Cx43 in cells with miR-1 knockdown formed both cell-cell gap junctions and hemichannels at the plasma membrane. Furthermore, the rate of ATP release was higher in cells with miR-1 knockdown than in control cells. Furthermore, Cx43 downregulation in developing molars was observed in Epiprofin-knockout mice, along with the induction of miR-1 expression. These results suggest that the expression pattern of Cx43 is modulated by miR-1 to control cell proliferation activity during dental epithelial cell differentiation
