Embedded monopoles in quark eigenmodes in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory

We study the embedded QCD monopoles (``quark monopoles'') using low-lying eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator in zero- and finite-temperature SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. These monopoles correspond to the gauge-invariant hedgehogs in the quark-antiquark condensates. The monopoles were suggested to be agents of the chiral symmetry restoration since their cores should suppress the chiral condensate. We study numerically the scalar, axial and chirally invariant definitions of the embedded monopoles and show that the monopole densities are in fact globally anti-correlated with the density of the Dirac eigenmodes. We observe, that the embedded monopoles corresponding to low-lying Dirac eigenvalues are dense in the chirally invariant (high temperature) phase and dilute in the chirally broken (low temperature) phase. We find that the scaling of the scalar and axial monopole densities towards the continuum limit is similar to the scaling of the string-like objects while the chirally invariant monopoles scale as membranes. The excess of gluon energy at monopole positions reveals that the embedded QCD monopole possesses a gluonic core, which is, however, empty at the very center of the monopole.Comment: 29 pages, 27 figures, RevTeX 4.0; revised to match the published version (clarifying remarks, references and acknowledgments are added

Multilevel Inverters with Equal or Unequal Sources for Dual-Frequency Induction Heating

Most existing power supplies for induction heating equipment produce voltage at a single (adjustable) frequency. Recently, however, induction heating power supplies that produce voltage at two (adjustable) frequencies have been researched and even commercialized. Dual-frequency power supplies are a significant development for heat-treating workpieces with uneven geometries, such as gears, since different portions of such workpieces are heated dissimilarly at a single frequency and so require a two step process using a single-frequency power supply. On the other hand, a dual-frequency power supply can achieve the desired result for such workpieces in a one step process. This paper proposes the use of multilevel converters for providing induction heating power at two frequencies simultaneously, which may achieve higher efficiency, improved control, reduced electromagnetic interference and greater reliability than existing dual-frequency power supplies. It also describes how the stepping angles for the desired output from such converters can be determined for both the equal and unequal source cases. Furthermore, experimental results are presented as a verification of the analysis

Managing the Socially Marginalized: Attitudes Towards Welfare, Punishment and Race

Welfare and incarceration policies have converged to form a system of governance over socially marginalized groups, particularly racial minorities. In both of these policy areas, rehabilitative and social support objectives have been replaced with a more punitive and restrictive system. The authors examine the convergence in individual-level attitudes concerning welfare and criminal punishment, using national survey data. The authors\u27 analysis indicates a statistically significant relationship between punitive attitudes toward welfare and punishment. Furthermore, accounting for the respondents\u27 racial attitudes explains the bivariate relationship between welfare and punishment. Thus, racial attitudes seemingly link support for punitive approaches to opposition to welfare expenditures. The authors discuss the implications of this study for welfare and crime control policies by way of the conclusion

The constitutive tensor of linear elasticity: its decompositions, Cauchy relations, null Lagrangians, and wave propagation

In linear anisotropic elasticity, the elastic properties of a medium are described by the fourth rank elasticity tensor C. The decomposition of C into a partially symmetric tensor M and a partially antisymmetric tensors N is often used in the literature. An alternative, less well-known decomposition, into the completely symmetric part S of C plus the reminder A, turns out to be irreducible under the 3-dimensional general linear group. We show that the SA-decomposition is unique, irreducible, and preserves the symmetries of the elasticity tensor. The MN-decomposition fails to have these desirable properties and is such inferior from a physical point of view. Various applications of the SA-decomposition are discussed: the Cauchy relations (vanishing of A), the non-existence of elastic null Lagrangians, the decomposition of the elastic energy and of the acoustic wave propagation. The acoustic or Christoffel tensor is split in a Cauchy and a non-Cauchy part. The Cauchy part governs the longitudinal wave propagation. We provide explicit examples of the effectiveness of the SA-decomposition. A complete class of anisotropic media is proposed that allows pure polarizations in arbitrary directions, similarly as in an isotropic medium.Comment: 1 figur

Percolation model for the superconductor-insulator transition in granular films

We study the temperature dependence of the superconductor-insulator transition in granular superconductors. Empirically, these systems are characterized by very broad resistance tails, which depend exponentially on the temperature, and the normal state resistance. We model these systems by a two-dimensional random resistor percolation networks in which the resistance between two grains is governed either by Josephson junction coupling or by quasi particle tunneling. Our numerical simulations as well as an effective medium evaluation explain the experimental results over a wide range of temperatures and resistances. Using effective medium approximation we find an analytical expression for the effective resistance of the system and the value of the critical resistance separating conducting from insulating branches.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
