Modified cotton fabrics for improved ultraviolet protection performance and reactive dyeing property

    Get PDF
Reactive quaternary ammonium cationic compound, [2,3-epoxypropyl-1-methy imidazole ammonium chloride (EPMI)] has been synthesized with 1-methylimidazole and epoxy chloropropane to improve the dyeing property of cotton fabrics and the cationic cotton fabrics combined Fe3+ to obtain UV protective property. The dye fixation (F%) of three reactive dyes is found to be 84.5-89.7% on modified cotton fabrics. Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) value of modified cotton fabric is increased to 137.47 from 7.57 of untreated cotton fabric. The breaking strength of modified cotton fabrics is well retained. The hue (h) of dyed samples before and after modification shows a little change. The UPF of modified cotton fabric shows excellent durability. After 50 laundering cycles, the UPF values decrease to 12.47%. Scanning electron microscopy observations and XRD patterns show that the modified cotton fibres are left nearly undamaged by the modification. The FTIR spectra suggest that the EPMI and Fe3+ are combined on the cotton fibres

This study reports compositional and whole-rock Sr-Nd isotope data as well as zircon U-Pb geochronological data on dolerite dikes from the Daba and Dongbo ultramafic massifs, southwest Yarlung-Zangbo Suture Zone (YZSZ), Tibet. The 120.6 \ub1 1.6 Ma dolerite dikes from the Daba peridotite exhibit normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB)-type normalized mutli-element patterns [(La/Yb)N = 0.43-0.72] with noticeable negative Nb and Th anomalies. They have high initial 87Sr/8624 Sr ratios (87Sr/8625 Sr(i) = 0.70720-0.70788) and high \u3b5Nd(t) values (+7.4 to +7.9). The 125.4 \ub1 1.8 Ma dolerite intrusions within the Dongbo peridotite show N-MORB\u2012type trace element profiles [(La/Yb)N = 0.65-0.84] characterized by apparent negative anomalies in Nb and Th, and mild negative anomalies in Ti (\ub1 Y). They also have high 87Sr/8629 Sr(i) ratios (0.70611-0.70679) and elevated \u3b5Nd(t) values (+7.8 to +8.2). Semi-quantitative La/Yb vs. Dy/Yb modeling demonstrates that the parental magmas of the investigated dolerite dikes derived from more than 20% (cumulative) melting of a (broad) mantle source region that had a spinel-bearing N-MORB\u2013like lherzolitic composition. Our geochemical and isotopic data indicate that the composition of the inferred mantle source was influenced by minor input of subducted crustal material. The petrogenesis of the Daba and Dongbo massifs could be linked to upwelling of an asthenospheric source that caused continental rift and subsequent seafloor spreading, followed by subduction initiation adjacent to a passive margin during the early Cretaceous (~130-120 Ma). Our study provides a more detailed, and perhaps more elegant, hypothesis for the tectono-magmatic evolution of the southwestern YZSZ "ophiolitic" peridotites after their accretion beneath a Neo-Tethyan marginal basin

Identification of a danger-associated peptide from apolipoprotein B100 (ApoBDS-1) that triggers innate proatherogenic responses

Background: Subendothelial deposited low-density lipoprotein particles are a known inflammatory factor in atherosclerosis. However, the causal components derived from low-density lipoprotein are still poorly defined. Apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB100) is the unexchangeable protein component of low-density lipoprotein, and the progression of atherosclerosis is associated with immune responses to ApoB100-derived peptides. In this study, we analyzed the proinflammatory activity of ApoB100 peptides in atherosclerosis. Methods and Results: By screening a peptide library of ApoB100, we identified a distinct native peptide referred to as ApoB100 danger-associated signal 1 (ApoBDS-1), which shows sequence-specific bioactivity in stimulation of interleukin-8, CCL2, and interleukin-6. ApoBDS-1 activates mitogen-activated protein kinase and calcium signaling, thereby effecting the expression of interleukin-8 in innate immune cells. Ex vivo stimulation of carotid plaques with ApoBDS-1 enhances interleukin-8 and prostaglandin E2 release. Furthermore, we demonstrated that ApoBDS-1–positive peptide fragments are present in atherosclerotic lesions using immunoassays and that low-molecular-weight fractions isolated from plaque show ApoBDS-1 activity inducing interleukin-8 production. Conclusions: Our data show that ApoBDS-1 is a previously unrecognized peptide with robust proinflammatory activity, contributing to the disease-promoting effects of low-density lipoprotein in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Associations of Educational Attainment, Occupation, Social Class and Major Depressive Disorder among Han Chinese Women

Background The prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) is higher in those with low levels of educational attainment, the unemployed and those with low social status. However the extent to which these factors cause MDD is unclear. Most of the available data comes from studies in developed countries, and these findings may not extrapolate to developing countries. Examining the relationship between MDD and socio economic status in China is likely to add to the debate because of the radical economic and social changes occurring in China over the last 30 years. Principal findings We report results from 3,639 Chinese women with recurrent MDD and 3,800 controls. Highly significant odds ratios (ORs) were observed between MDD and full time employment (OR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.25–0.46, logP = 78), social status (OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.77–0.87, logP = 13.3) and education attainment (OR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.86–0.90, logP = 6.8). We found a monotonic relationship between increasing age and increasing levels of educational attainment. Those with only primary school education have significantly more episodes of MDD (mean 6.5, P-value = 0.009) and have a clinically more severe disorder, while those with higher educational attainment are likely to manifest more comorbid anxiety disorders. Conclusions In China lower socioeconomic position is associated with increased rates of MDD, as it is elsewhere in the world. Significantly more episodes of MDD occur among those with lower educational attainment (rather than longer episodes of disease), consistent with the hypothesis that the lower socioeconomic position increases the likelihood of developing MDD. The phenomenology of MDD varies according to the degree of educational attainment: higher educational attainment not only appears to protect against MDD but alters its presentation, to a more anxious phenotype

Geological Characteristics of Mud Volcanoes and Diapirs in the Northern Continental Margin of the South China Sea: Implications for the Mechanisms Controlling the Genesis of Fluid Leakage Structures

    No full text
Mud volcanoes and diapirs are geological structures formed due to arch piercing or diapiric intrusion of ductile sedimentary materials into the overlying strata along high permeability channels. A detailed study on the processes controlling the formation of mud volcanoes and diapirs in the northern continental margin of the South China Sea is of vital importance to the exploration of economically viable oil and gas reservoirs and can be helpful to the exploration of natural gas hydrate in a sedimentary basin. The fluid seepage structures that occur in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary basins of the northern South China Sea show significant differences in their morphological and tectono-structural characteristics. We used high-resolution seismic profiles and instantaneous frequency profiles to understand the mechanisms that are critical with respect to the differential development of the investigated piercement structures. Differences in stress field do not directly lead to the difference in the scale of mud volcanoes or diapirs. Fractures may play an important role in the formation of mud volcanoes and diapirs. The thickness of the sediment was found to have a strong impact on the formation of fluid leakage structures that thicker sediments are more conducive to the development of mud diapirs and the thinner one is more likely to form mud volcanoes

Early Cretaceous Granitoids Magmatism in the Nagqu Area, Northern Tibet: Constraints on the Timing of the Lhasa–Qiangtang Collision

    No full text
The timing of the Lhasa–Qiangtang collision following the closure of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean has not been well constrained. An integrated study of whole-rock geochemistry and zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopes was carried out for Early Cretaceous quartz diorite-porphyrites and granites from the Yilashan and Amdo areas, northern Tibet. LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating reveal that the Yilashan and Amdo granitoids were emplaced at ~121–110 Ma. These granitic rocks display selective enrichment of light rare earth elements, large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, U) and Th, but depletion of Sr and high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, Ti) compared to its neighboring elements. These new data, combined with regional geological setting, show that these igneous rocks were formed under a geodynamic setting of the Lhasa and Qiangtang (–Amdo) collision with oceanic slab breakoff and asthenospheric upwelling. The BNTO had been closed at ~121–110 Ma in the study area. Yilashan-Amdo granitoids roughly yield high (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios and obvious negative εNd(t) and zircon εHf(t) values along with old Nd TDM and zircon Hf TDM2 ages. Together with their variable U–Pb ages, these features indicate a Precambrian “hidden” crustal source beneath the northern Lhasa and Amdo terranes. The YLSS S-type granophyres were derived from partial melting of Paleoproterozoic lower crustal metagraywackes, whereas the YLSZ quartz diorite–porphyrites and the Amdo I- and A-type granites were mainly derived from partial melting of Paleo–Mesoproterozoic lower crustal mafic rocks with a certain amount of addition of mantle-derived melts. Minor amounts of the materials originated from the Amdo orthogneisses may also be involved in the formation of the YLSZ quartz diorite–porphyrites and the Amdo I-type granites. In addition, the Yilashan ophiolite was intruded by the ~112–108 Ma granophyric and quartz diorite–porphyritic intrusions before its final emplacement into the surrounding strata
