    Ultra-Strong Long-Chain Polyamide Elastomers With Programmable Supramolecular Interactions and Oriented Crystalline Microstructures

    Polyamides are one of the most important polymers. Long-chain aliphatic polyamides could bridge the gap between traditional polyamides and polyethylenes. Here we report an approach to preparing sustainable ultra-strong elastomers from biomass-derived long-chain polyamides by thiol-ene addition copolymerization with diamide diene monomers. The pendant polar hydroxyl and non-polar butyrate groups between amides allow controlled programming of supramolecular hydrogen bonding and facile tuning of crystallization of polymer chains. The presence of thioether groups on the main chain can further induce metal–ligand coordination (cuprous-thioether). Unidirectional step-cycle tensile deformation has been applied to these polyamides and significantly enhances tensile strength to over 210 MPa while maintaining elasticity. Uniaxial deformation leads to a rearrangement and alignment of crystalline microstructures, which is responsible for the mechanical enhancement. These chromophore-free polyamides are observed with strong luminescence ascribed to the effect of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), originating from the formation of amide clusters with restricted molecular motions

    Physical activity inversely associated with the presence of depression among urban adolescents in regional China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An inverse relationship between physical activity (PA) and depression among adolescents has been reported in developed communities without consideration of sedentary behaviors (SB, including sitting for course study, viewing TV, and sleeping). We explored the association between recreational PA time (hr/wk) and depression after adjustment with SB and other possible confounders among Chinese adolescents.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Nanjing municipality of China in 2004 using a multi-stage cluster sampling approach. A total of 72 classes were randomly selected from 24 urban junior high schools and all students completed the structured questionnaire. Adolescent depression was examined by the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) of Chinese version with cutoff point value of 20 or above as the presence of depression. Recreational PA time was measured by a question on weekly hours of PA outside of school. Descriptive statistics, multivariate logistic and linear regression models were used in analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The overall prevalence of depression was 15.7% (95%CI: 14.3%, 17.1%) among 2,444 eligible participants. It was found that physical activity was negatively associated with depression. After adjustment for sedentary behaviors and other potential confounders, participants who spent 1–7 hr/wk, 8–14 hr/wk and 15+ hr/wk for recreational PA, respectively, had odds ratios of 0.70 (95% CI = 0.57, 0.86), 0.68 (95% CI = 0.53, 0.88) and 0.66 (95% CI = 0.50, 0.87) for likelihood of being depressive, compared to their counterparts who spent 0–0.9 hr/wk for PA. This inverse relationship between PA time and depression remained statistically significant by gender and grade.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study, conducted among Chinese adolescents, strengthened the evidence that physical activity was inversely associated with depression. Our study has important implications for health officers and public health professionals to pay much attention to the relationship between physical activity and depression in Mainland China.</p

    A heterozygous moth genome provides insights into herbivory and detoxification

    How an insect evolves to become a successful herbivore is of profound biological and practical importance. Herbivores are often adapted to feed on a specific group of evolutionarily and biochemically related host plants1, but the genetic and molecular bases for adaptation to plant defense compounds remain poorly understood2. We report the first whole-genome sequence of a basal lepidopteran species, Plutella xylostella, which contains 18,071 protein-coding and 1,412 unique genes with an expansion of gene families associated with perception and the detoxification of plant defense compounds. A recent expansion of retrotransposons near detoxification-related genes and a wider system used in the metabolism of plant defense compounds are shown to also be involved in the development of insecticide resistance. This work shows the genetic and molecular bases for the evolutionary success of this worldwide herbivore and offers wider insights into insect adaptation to plant feeding, as well as opening avenues for more sustainable pest management.Minsheng You … Simon W Baxter … et al

    Clinicopathological Features of 166 Cases of Invasive Ductal Breast Carcinoma and Effect of Primary Tumor Location on Prognosis after Modified Radical Mastectomy

    Objective. To investigate the clinicopathological features of 166 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) of the breast and to analyze the effect of the location of the primary tumor on the prognosis of modified radical mastectomy. Materials and Methods. The clinical data of 166 patients with IDC who underwent modified radical mastectomy in our hospital from May 2015 to May 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. The clinicopathological features of IDC patients were recorded. Univariate analysis and the multivariate logistic regression model were used to analyze the relationship between the location of the primary tumor and the prognosis of IDC patients after modified radical surgery. The effect of primary tumor location on the prognosis of modified radical resection was used with Survival curve analysis. Results. Among the patients in the central region, 13.33% had tumors >5 cm in diameter, which was higher than those in the other four groups. Among the patients in the upper inner quadrant, 59.38% received hormone therapy after operation, which was higher than those in the other four groups (P0.05). Univariate analysis showed that molecular typing, lymph node metastasis, vascular invasion, and location of the primary tumor were all related to the prognosis of IDC patients after modified radical surgery, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that molecular typing, lymph node metastasis, vascular invasion, and primary tumor location were all independent influencing factors for prognosis of IDC patients after modified radical surgery (P<0.05). As of 31 May 2021, there were 11 patients with recurrence and metastasis and 20 patients with death. The median survival time in the outer upper quadrant group was 80 months, which was higher than that in the outer lower quadrant group by 72 months, the median survival time in the central region group by 71 months, the median survival time in the inner upper quadrant group by 67 months, and the median survival time in the inner lower quadrant group by 61 months. The log-rank test showed all P<0.001. Conclusion. Patients with primary tumors located in the central area have larger tumor diameters. Patients located in the central area, upper inner quadrant, and lower inner quadrant are more likely to have lymphatic metastasis, have a more serious condition, and have a shorter prognosis survival time. Unluminal type, multiple lymph node metastases, vascular invasion, and the location of the primary tumor in the inner quadrant are all independent risk factors for prognosis in patients after modified radical surgery for IDC

    Multi-objective ant lion optimization for parameter optimization of wireless power transfer systems

    The effective transmission distance of a magnetic coupling resonance (MCR) wireless power transfer (WPT) system is an essential index of wireless power transfer. Existing systems often suffer from short transmission distances, low power, and low efficiency. In this paper, a method is proposed for improving the parameters of wireless power transfer systems to enhance the performance of the systems. The main parameters affecting the output power and transmission efficiency are determined by analyzing the MCR WPT system with SS-type topology. In addition, the multi-objective ant lion optimizer is combined with tent chaotic mapping to generate the location information of the initial population by using the distribution and randomness of tent chaotic mapping, which increases the diversity of the people and improves the convergence speed and global search capability of the algorithm to achieve multi-objective parameter optimization, and the optimized model is also analyzed. Experiments show that the optimized MCR WPT system has improved output power and transmission efficiency at a longer distance. The optimal transmission distance of the system is about 0.2 m with a maximum output power of 129.3 W, and the axial offset stability of the system is enhanced. Finally, the effectiveness of the improved model is verified by building a prototype system. It provides a valuable reference for the research of improving wireless power transfer

    Association between Spouse/Child Separation and Migration-Related Stress among a Random Sample of Rural-to-Urban Migrants in Wuhan, China.

    BACKGROUND:Millions of people move from rural areas to urban areas in China to pursue new opportunities while leaving their spouses and children at rural homes. Little is known about the impact of migration-related separation on mental health of these rural migrants in urban China. METHODS:Survey data from a random sample of rural-to-urban migrants (n = 1113, aged 18-45) from Wuhan were analyzed. The Domestic Migration Stress Questionnaire (DMSQ), an instrument with four subconstructs, was used to measure migration-related stress. The relationship between spouse/child separation and stress was assessed using survey estimation methods to account for the multi-level sampling design. RESULTS:16.46% of couples were separated from their spouses (spouse-separation only), 25.81% of parents were separated from their children (child separation only). Among the participants who married and had children, 5.97% were separated from both their spouses and children (double separation). Spouse-separation only and double separation did not scored significantly higher on DMSQ than those with no separation. Compared to parents without child separation, parents with child separation scored significantly higher on DMSQ (mean score = 2.88, 95% CI: [2.81, 2.95] vs. 2.60 [2.53, 2.67], p < .05). Stratified analysis by separation type and by gender indicated that the association was stronger for child-separation only and for female participants. CONCLUSION:Child-separation is an important source of migration-related stress, and the effect is particularly strong for migrant women. Public policies and intervention programs should consider these factors to encourage and facilitate the co-migration of parents with their children to mitigate migration-related stress
